Sommaren med Monika (1953)
Certainly not good for millennials
Basic, narrow, with some fake acting. It was probably ahead of its time when first released and does expose the feeing teenagers have to revolt against anything while being careless and immature. Still, the plot is not perplexed enough for the 21th century viewer.
Un amour impossible (2018)
Crush test with yourself to test your limits
The plot is overloaded with all sorts of personal, psychological, familial malfunctions. It ends up tiring you rather than entertain or make one think.
The development of the characters is a bit predictable even though they have many different hardships to undergo.
The acting is excellent without an exception and the aesthetics of the film is brilliant.
I'd say it's like a crush test for yourself to see how you'll react and what you think intuitively about all that's going on.
Cliffs of Freedom (2019)
This film is wrong in more ways than it is right
Before my fellow supporters of the Greek revolution start attacking me I would like to remind my readers that this film was based on a novel. That means that it could be about anything, literally anything in the world that we live in and the world of a writer's creative imagination. It is not a documentary, neither a biography and it should not be treated as such. The historiographic approach which it follows is a very common one in the circles of Greek history after the 20th century and offers a linear narrative of how the Greeks have always wanted to get rid of the Turks. The historical truth that lies behind the movie is that indeed, the months near and after the revolution were remarkably dreadful however, the cohabitation with the Turks was not as turbulent as many would like to claim. The Ottoman Empire was a long-lived empire which tried to assimilate to the previously glorious Byzantine Empire.
It is remarkable for the movie that it shows a female figure drastically influencing the flow of the events that led to the battle of Valtetsi, a fact which cannot be verified historically as far as I know, but passes brilliantly a feministic message.
In a nutshell, moving and misleading because of the emotions, feministic in its unique way and don't forget it's based on a novel, plus fairly good acting.
The New Romantic (2018)
The New Romantic Review of the film
It's worth to watch this movie for one important reason: so you know what not to do with your life, not to push beyond thin lines. And also, to process some personality traits that we may all have but we may as well hide. This film shows how possible it is to be on "the other side" by just being yourself, not resisting, not having any moral restrictions, nothing to hold you back. It challenges matters of personality, ethics as well as social interpersonal relationships.
The Wife (2017)
It'll remind you of other films you've seen before
Incoherent, absurd in a silly way, the film prevents you from getting its point for at least the first half hour. The patterns that it follows are clear and we have seen them in films like Collette. Acting is great and honest and not pretentious but this does not make up for the movie lacking appealing traits in terms of the script.
