Every. Season. Counts.
The Bear's renewal for simultaneously filmed third and fourth seasons was sweet dad-rock music to the ears of critics and audiences alike.
After sweeping the Emmys and benefiting from word-of-mouth buzz around its Christmas-themed episode "Fishes," the show was practically guaranteed renewal to give us at least one more season with the volatile and tight-knit Berzattos.
An Interesting Experiment
Capitalizing on the moment by filming back-to-back seasons was a smart move for the series and might become a trend for other shows.
Logistically it makes sense to take advantage of utilizing a show's cast and crew for two seasons in one go, instead of having to align all of those schedules again in another eighteen months or so.
In the current landscape of surprise cancellations, it also makes creative sense for a show to film a multi-season arc without the worry of ending on a cliffhanger.

Based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, Big Little Lies was a massive hit for HBO when it first came out. Although it was initially labeled as a miniseries, the series was renewed for a second season, which was based on a novella written by Moriarty. The black comedy-drama featured a star-filled cast led by Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoë Kravitz as the five women who get caught up in a murder investigation in California. They were joined by Meryl Streep in the second season, with supporting roles played by Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott, James Tupper, Jeffrey Nordling, Kathryn Newton, and Iain Armitage.
And while the series supposedly ended with Season 2, Kidman hinted, in November 2023, that a third season would be made and this has officially been confirmed by Kidman and Witherspoon in a talk the two actresses had with Vanity Fair.

The long-rumoured Big Little Lies season 3 seems to be happening according to Nicole Kidman. More details below.
It’s been a while since we last saw the ladies of Monterey. The Monterey Five, played by Resse Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz and Laura Dern, were still reeling from the intense murder investigation they faced in season two of the HBO hit show in 2019. It now looks as though Big Little Lies season 3 really will happen.
Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon got together for a chat for Vanity Fair and the talk quickly turned to Big Little Lies. Witherspoon revealed that Kidman had called her to ask if Big Little Lies season 3 was happening and had apparently also rang all her co-stars. No new season was in the works at the time.

With networks and streaming services tightening their purse strings a bit, it’s becoming less and less common that we see massive prestige dramas with huge budgets and superstar casts. The epitome of this trend is “Big Little Lies,” an HBO series where the cast budget is seemingly bigger than production budget. It’s probably a miracle we even got two seasons of the show. But according to Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, a third season is pretty definite.

Nicole Kidman recently opened up about the psychological effects of playing challenging roles. The Hollywood Reporter’s Drama Actress Roundtable recently featured Nicole Kidman, Brie Larson, Anna Sawai, and Naomi Watts. During the discussion, the actresses weighed in on the stress of taking on challenging roles.
During the Hollywood Reporter interview, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman revealed that after a rough day filming Big Little Lies, she threw a rock through a locked door, breaking its window. During the roundtable discussion, Jodie Foster asked Nicole Kidman about the incident.
In response, Nicole Kidman revealed she was so “pissed off” after filming the show that covered domestic violence that she took out her frustration at a locked door with a window. The actress recalled, “I threw a rock because [the door] was locked, and I couldn’t get in. I’d never done that in my life.

Nicole Kidman has taken on a series of tough roles, but to play a domestic violence survivor in HBO’s “Big Little Lies” brought a new level of stress.
The Oscar winner and recent AFI Life Achievement Award recipient told The Hollywood Reporter that while filming the beloved series, she realized there really wasn’t “the time to go, ‘I need to take care of myself'” on set, which led to her being so frustrated that she threw a rock through a locked door of her house, breaking its window to get through.

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall with its third season and with it comes the show’s best cast to date. Nicole Beharie, Jon Hamm, Tig Notaro, and Stephen Fry all joined the cast while mainstays Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup all turned in their best work yet.
However, it’s the show’s supporting players, who have been here since day one, that makes the series so good. Karen Pittman is a prime example of that. The series depicts the behind-the-scenes drama of a US morning TV show and Pittman plays Mia Jordan, a key producer of said show. Pittman has always been an actress who possesses a powerful screen presence and that is true here, too. She captivates audiences (and the other actors) but also smartly sews vulnerability into a character who has some power in the show.

The concept of the limited series swept the TV world recently, and it felt like it happened overnight.
It is not an entirely new idea, as miniseries have existed since the time of radio dramas.
However, people lost interest in them at some point, and the era seemed to come to an end.
So much so that in 1991, the Emmy Awards merged Outstanding Miniseries with Outstanding TV Movie.
After numerous name changes to the category, the concept suddenly resurged -- the limited series was born.
With the popularity of American Horror Story, in 2015 they changed the category to Outstanding Limited Series.
TV Shows Should Make Stars, Not Depend On Them
But now, the idea carries almost no weight due to networks and streamers renewing the popular limited series and turning them into plain old series.

The modern TV system is definitely undergoing some major changes as it demonstrates that it’s no longer just the networks that decide fan-favorite shows’ fate, but the fans themselves also seem to be getting their right to have a voice.
Though so far the examples of some series that were brought back to the screen after official cancellation aren’t that numerous, the overall tendency is quite positive, and it seems like another popular show is about to get a second chance after a huge campaign started by its lovers from the other side of the screen.
Some fans of recently scrapped successful shows like NCIS: Hawai’i or So Help Me Todd may hold their breath here, but, to their great disappointment, the lucky series has nothing to do with CBS at all.

After the Harry Potter franchise concluded in 2011, the filmmakers attempted to fill the young adult movie niche. The new fashion of the 2010s became a series of teen dystopian movies, headed by The Hunger Games that was a huge success back in 2012.
Based on Suzanne Collins’ novels, it set the bar quite high for similar movie adaptations, however, the subsequent big screen versions of the hyped bestsellers clearly lacked its wholesomeness. These include the 2014 sci-fi action flick that followed in Thg’s footsteps.
Set in post-apocalyptic America, the movie centers on Tris, a 16-year-old girl whose fate is about to be decided. The point is the new dystopian society is divided into four factions based on human virtues: Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite.
Born and raised as a member of Abnegation, Tris should choose which faction is going to be her new home, but before that she is warned...

For over a decade, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were the dream Hollywood couple. The actors who had a fairytale romance on the sets of their film Days of Thunder, tied the knot in 1990 and seemed to have the perfect life until their shocking divorce in 2001. Kidman subsequently went on to marry musician Keith Urban in 2006.

As a Virgo, I’m all about order. As a kid, I created my own card catalog for my collection of books, as if I were a library. I still alphabetize and catalog all of my music on Discogs. Even my Emmy notes are neatly organized by year, going all the way back to 1996.
That’s why I wasn’t happy in the late 1990s when hourlong shows like “Ally McBeal” and “Desperate Housewives” entered the Emmy comedy race. Hourlong dramedies are not comedies! No one ever called “All in the Family” — which had some deep, dark moments — a drama, and yet there were a couple of laughs in “Desperate Housewives” (which opened with a death!) and suddenly it’s a comedy?
Sadly, I lost this battle years ago. And as we know, the comedy race is really now a dramedy race. The frontrunner, FX’s “The Bear,” is famously...

Netflix has tied up a deal in the $34M range for the John Lee Hancock-directed package Monsanto, we can reveal. The pic will star Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie and Oscar winner Laura Dern.
CAA Media Finance cut the presale after launching with Rocket Science last week. Netflix has been quieter at recent markets but is back at the table with the splashy deal.
This and Apple’s WW deal for Everest sherpa pic Tenzing are the two biggest deals to emerge from the Cannes market so far. The latter is understood to be in the $40M range.
Monsanto tells the true story of young, untried attorney Brent Wisner (Powell), who takes on a seemingly insurmountable case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie) who used Monsanto’s best-known product Roundup, a wildly financially successful weed and grass pesticide killer, as part...

Boy Kills World looked to be a cool action flick – and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray said it was in his 8/10 review, where he wrote, “I had a total blast with this demented actioner.” But even with producer Sam Raimi’s name on the film, it didn’t draw in much of an audience during its theatrical run. According to The Numbers, it only made $3 million worldwide. Now it’s heading to home video, where hopefully it will have more success. Boy Kills World is getting a digital release next week, on May 28th, and Amazon is already accepting pre-orders at This Link.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Moritz Mohr. It was scripted by Arend Remmers (Sløborn) and Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury: The Movie). The story takes place in a bizarre, dark dystopian universe and centers on a deaf and mute character, Boy, who navigates this...

In Apple TV+’s upcoming limited series, Jake Gyllenhaal hopes to be Presumed Innocent and not proven guilty.
Based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Scott Turow — which of course previously begat the 1990 Harrison Ford/Greta Scacchi/Bonnie Bedelia film — the eight-episode series covers a horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich (played by Gyllenhaal) is suspected of the crime. “The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together,” reads its official description.

Eight years ago, the writer-director Andrea Arnold packed up her handheld-camera brand of kitchen-sink British austerity and took it across the pond to make “American Honey,” a movie about a wolf pack of kids in a van who seemed to incarnate the tumult of the 21st century. The movie, crafted in a style that I thought of as hip-hop Dardenne brothers, was an indie explosion that felt like a landmark. Now, though, in “Bird,” the first dramatic feature that Arnold has made since, she’s back to chronicling the miserablism of aimless, scroungy British young folk who experience their lives as a dead zone. Forgive me if I wish she hadn’t left the party so soon.
For years, Arnold has been a Cannes darling, and a critics’ darling too. So I expect to be out of the loop when I say that “Bird,” which premiered at Cannes today, doesn...

British auteur Andrea Arnold follows up her last feature, the poignant, non-verbal slice-of-farmyard-life that is the documentary Cow, with a new member of her cinematic menagerie: drama Bird, an uplifting competitor for Cannes’ Palme d’Or.
With mostly human characters and actual dialogue, in some ways this is taxonomically more like her gritty-as-asphalt, early social-realist work, especially Fish Tank and Oscar-winning short Wasp, which, like Bird, were shot in the southerly county of Kent, U.K., where Arnold grew up. But then suddenly, out of the milieu’s marshy semi-urban landscape of empty beer cans, cigarette butts, domestic abuse and despair, the film takes magical-realist flight and transforms into something unlike anything Arnold’s done before. Thanks to the director’s magisterial knack with actors (especially non-professionals such as terrific adolescent discovery Nykiya Adams, who, as the protagonist, is in nearly every frame of the film), the result is quite entrancing.

Within the past week, Jennifer Jason Leigh (“Fargo”) lost and then regained her first place position on our Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress Emmy odds chart. She is being given a run for her money by small screen newcomer Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”), who maintained general frontrunner status from May 9-12 and is still our experts’ pick to win, as has been the case since May 3.
A week ago, Reis was also our editors’ predicted winner, but they have since gravitated back toward Leigh. Based on the forecasts of 2,400+ Gold Derby users, both women currently have 6/1 odds in their race, with their closest competitor being Aja Naomi King (“Lessons in Chemistry”) at 15/2.
The temporary toppling of Leigh occurred three weeks after “Shōgun” overtook “Fargo” in the Best Limited Series race. Since then, the consensus among our readers has been that the latter show’s best shot...

FX spent years developing their adaptation of James Clavell’s Shōgun, which ranks as the most expensive scripted show the studio has ever done, but it all paid off big time with rave reviews and an impressively large audience. Despite being billed as a limited series, it’s possible that Shōgun season 2 could happen.
Deadline reports that Hiroyuki Sanada, who starred as Lord Yoshii Toranaga and also produced the series, has closed a deal to return for a potential second season. Nothing is set in stone, but FX hopes to get their ducks in a row for more Shōgun. THR added that there are “other extenuating circumstances” to overcome before FX can formally greenlight a second season. The show was the network’s biggest Hulu premiere, with 9 million streaming views globally spread across Hulu, Disney+ and Star+ in its first six days of availability.

One of the best recent rule changes the Television Academy recently made was the 2020 decision to expand the Drama and Comedy series categories to include eight nominees, regardless of the number of entries. But if the goal of the Primetime Emmys is to be reflective of the shows that most engaged viewers and voters alike throughout the TV season, it needs to now go one step further. The TV Academy needs to expand the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category to eight nominees as well.
In the decade since they have re-split the Limited Series and TV Movie categories there have been plenty of winners that were a cultural moment, from “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story” to “Big Little Lies” to “Watchmen,” but these event series were not as common an occurrence. Then the Covid-19 pandemic happened, an event that has had ramifications to the television schedule still present today.

The British miniseries Baby Reindeer became a surprise hit for Netflix. It is a story based on real events by the screenwriter and showrunner of the project, Richard Gadd. Unsuccessful comedian Donny, who temporarily works in a bar, becomes the victim of a stalker. The woman destroys his personal life and interferes with his career, but unwittingly helps Donny deal with the monstrous psychological traumas of the past.
Baby Reindeer became the most popular series on Netflix in April – at first there was little attention to the show with not the most famous actors, but in the second week, views on streaming increased by 408%.
In early May, however, Baby Reindeer was knocked off the top spot on Netflix by another drama that fans claim did not deserve it.

Review: Jeff Daniels has had a career that includes acclaimed performances on stage in Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird and on the big screen in dozens of dramas, as well as his iconic turn in the Dumb and Dumber films opposite Jim Carrey. To say the actor has a wide range would be an understatement. To follow up his brilliant turn in Sorkin’s HBO series The Newsroom, Daniels headlines the limited Netflix series A Man In Full, which has him channeling the most nefarious antagonist characters he has ever played.
