One of the best TV shows of 2023, Apple TV’s dystopian sci-fi thriller Silo has it all. Murder! Mystery! Rebecca Ferguson! A mile-deep subterranean structure that acts as a barrier betweeen humanity’s dwindling populace and the apocalyptic wasteland on the Earth’s surface! In fact, so popular proved the adaptation of Hugh Howey’s novels that before the first season had even finished, the streamer greenlit Season 2. Now, having teased “more secrets of the silo to be revealed,” Apple have shared some juicy first look images from our upcoming return to the down deep. Check them out;
At the end of Silo’s first season, we saw engineer-turned-marshal Juliette (Ferguson) finally leaving the titular superstructure and stepping out onto the surface world. Before announcing its long-anticipated entry into artificial intelligence, Apple kicked off its worldwide developer conference (Wwdc) Monday with a plug for Apple TV+, whose fifth anniversary is November 1.
“Before we get into our platforms, let’s talk about Apple TV+,” CEO Tim Cook said. While a crowd had gathered to watch the presentation live, segments featuring Cook and a couple dozen other Apple employees and execs were pre-taped on the company’s Cupertino, CA campus. Cook was shown standing on the solar panels on the roof of headquarters.

Composer Atli Örvarsson wrote the music for Silo, the Apple TV+ series about a post-apocalyptic society living within a giant silo so old they don’t even know who built it. For the tale, Örvasson said he thought of musical instruments that could represent loneliness.
“I tried to imagine possibly living in these conditions,” Örvarsson said during a panel conversation at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television live-music event. “It must be incredibly lonely, incredibly isolating. I go to more traditional solo instruments like piano and solo violin.”
Örvarsson gave some of those traditional instruments a futuristic revamp. For example, a magnetic resonator piano features in the score. Magnets give the piano strings more electronic sounds.
In addition to loneliness, Örvarsson also thought about the technical logistics of the silo setting.
“The first thing I started working on in the score was just kind of probing the tones,” Örvarsson said. “I...

“Severance” stars Scott, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry and John Turturro as employees of a shady biotech company who “severs” its employees with a medical procedure, rendering their work and home lives completely separate. The cast also includes Patricia Arquette, Tramell Tillman, Christopher Walken, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus and Dichen Lachman. Nowadays, the quality of a TV series is practically no different from a movie, and the possibilities for directors, writers and artists are expanding. This attracts professionals to TV series production, TV shows budgets are growing, and as a result, the visual style is becoming more sophisticated, and the narratives become more and more complex.
Silo is One of the Most Promising Sci-Fi Projects Now
On June 29, 2023, one of such projects, the sci-fi series Silo by Graham Yost, based on the first novel of the book series of the same name by Hugh Howey, ended its first season on Apple TV+. And now we can definitely say that this series has become one of the main events in the genre over the past few years.

New Exorcist Director Mike Flanagan Is 'Terrified' To Be Taking On The Horror Classic [Atx Festival]
Earlier this month, horror mastermind Mike Flanagan was announced as the new heir apparent to the "Exorcist" franchise, assuming the reins from David Gordon Green in what's being described as a "radical new take" on the truly scary source material. Little is known about the "Haunting of Hill House" and "Midnight Mass" creator's plans for the long-running property, but at the annual Atx festival in Austin today, Flanagan spoke frankly about the pressure of crafting a new story in the shadow of one of the most frightening tales ever told.
"For 'The Exorcist' specifically, I'm f**king terrified," Flanagan admitted at a panel attended by /Film's Ryan Scott. A spotlight on adaptations titled "From Book To Script To Screen," the event also featured a number of other panelists, including the executive producers behind AMC's "Interview with the Vampire," ABC's "Will Trent," Netflix's "Black Mirror," and the Apple TV+ series "Silo.

Science fiction and fantasy have inspired dozens of great television scores through the years, from “Battlestar Galactica” to “Game of Thrones.” Three more streaming series continued that tradition this season: “Silo,” “Fallout” and “3 Body Problem.”
Atli Örvarsson’s music for “Silo,” the Apple TV+ dystopian drama set in a bleak future where everyone lives in underground silos, was initially inspired by the setting. “It’s a mechanized world,” he says. “The technology you see is very, very old; the computers look like they’re from the ’80s, so there was always this idea that even the electronic sounds should be primitive, not slick.”
So he relied on Korg and Moog synthesizers from earlier eras, along with an unusual keyboard: the magnetic resonator piano, which uses electromagnets to create unusual sounds from the strings inside the instrument. “There’s a steampunk feel to the design of the show, and this is the ultimate steampunk instrument,...

10. 11.22.63 (2016)
A large part of Fallout’s charm is its retro futurism that makes use of the 1960–1970s aesthetic. If you’re a sucker for that aesthetic, look no further than 11.22.63: in this sci-fi drama, we travel into the past alongside James Franco to try and prevent Kennedy’s assassination… And grow terrifyingly close to his new life in the past.
You can watch 11.22.63 on Apple TV and Prime Video.
9. The Shield (2002–2008)
Another big hook of Fallout is the complete lawlessness of the Wasteland despite there being some people who call themself “the law.” If you’re into that whole “dirty and corrupt law enforcers” kind of thing, The Shield is for you: set in a fictional completely lawless district of LA, this show follows a unit of really, really bad cops.

Satisfying people’s never-ending interest in science fiction series, Apple TV has become presumably the main platform that releases the most inventive shows in the genre.
While its global chart is now dominated by Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly’s Dark Matter, there are a number of other worth-watching titles to be binged by sci-fi veterans.
Here are 4 of the most high-rated science fiction shows on Apple TV+.
Severance (2022 - …)
Adam Scott-starring psychological thriller series follows the employees of the fictional corporation Lumon Industries, who undergo severance, a special medical procedure that divides their memories between their work and personal lives. Now that FX has decided to make more episodes of its breakout hit Shōgun, it is changing its Emmy strategy for the James Clavell adaptation.
Deadline has learned that FX will submit the saga — which originally premiered as a limited series — in the drama category. Before, Shōgun would have competed against the likes of Under the Bridge or Apples Never Fall. Apple TV+ has canceled the sci-fi series Constellation after a single season. The ambitious series, led by Noomi Rapace, follows Jo Ericsson, an astronaut who returns to Earth after a disaster in space only to find significant pieces of her life missing. This intriguing storyline was expected to anchor the show within Apple TV+’s sci-fi portfolio alongside popular titles like For All Mankind, Severance, Foundation, and Silo. Unfortunately, the show didn’t make it into Nielsen’s streaming top 10, resulting in its quick cancellation after just eight episodes, which ran from February to late March. Despite the early promise and critical

Near the end of the miniseries Lawmen: Bass Reeves, David Oyelowo’s titular character is told something all too familiar to many unsung real-life heroes: “No one’s gonna ever know, but you made history today.”
“You can just imagine how many people from marginalized communities that is the truth for,” he says. “People who very much had a real hand in building this country, and whether it’s their history not being taught … or that their contribution to history hasn’t been valued in the same way, which is why getting this show made was an obsession.”
That obsession took the form of Yoruba Saxon, a talent-led production company Oyelowo created with his wife Jessica in 2014, though his desire to produce actually came from his “accidental experience” of helping to put together Ava DuVernay’s Selma years before. “I didn’t realize those moves that go on to lead...

Once upon a time, the post-apocalypse genre was almost exclusive to movies, with the occasional exception, such as the 1994 mini-series The Stand. Fortunately, the advent of streaming services and bigger budgets changed the paradigm.
Nowadays, radioactive landscapes, bombed-out buildings, hordes of shambling, reanimated dead bodies in various states of decomposition, and desperate, struggling survivors are commonplace on smaller screens.
Ostensibly, post-apocalypse shows are about survival in a devastated world. Dig a little deeper, however, and there's almost always a tale of morality or lack thereof. Movies struggle with this, often opting for CG effects to dazzle and attract, neglecting the human aspect.
That's what makes TV the perfect conduit for a tale of post-apocalyptic survivalism. While not all of them get it right, like 2020's The Stand, a long, drawn-out affair has the luxury of time and world-building on its side.

The recent success of 3 Body Problem and the prominent domination of Prime Video’s Fallout banger show proved people’s great interest in science fiction series. Thus, every streaming platform is trying to present its own takes on the genre, including Apple TV.

Dan McDermott, President of Entertainment and AMC Studios, says the studio is positioned to do more third-party productions like Silo, though he noted that “it’s not our primary business.”
The big-budget dystopian drama was renewed last year for a second season on Apple TV+. Production for Season 2 wrapped earlier this year, but a premiere date has not been confirmed.
McDermott and other AMC Networks execs fielded questions about the company’s original programming strategy during the company’s first-quarter earnings call with Wall Street analysts. One wondered about Silo specifically, given its budget is at the high end for AMC as well as the reality that third-party projects don’t feed the company’s own network and streaming portfolio.
“AMC Studios is a vibrant and productive group that produces for every one of our platforms,” McDermott said. “These shows enable us to build a library, which accrues real value...

AMC Networks fell short of Wall Street analysts’ forecasts with a set of first-quarter financial results reflecting the company’s ongoing struggles with advertising.
Revenue fell 17% from the year-ago quarter to $596 million, though the company noted that excluding nonrecurring revenues related to Silo and 25/7 Media, net revenues would have declined 6%. Earnings per share fell by more than half, settling at $1.16 on an adjusted basis.
Advertising revenues decreased 13% to $140 million, with the company citing a downturn in linear ratings and a challenging ad market. Affiliate revenues decreased 14%, which the company blamed on “basic subscriber declines.”
Content licensing revenues decreased 40% to $62 million due to the availability of deliveries in the period. The year-earlier period included deliveries of Silo, an AMC Studios series made for Apple TV+. Excluding revenues related to Silo, content licensing revenues increased 31%.
Streaming was something of a bright spot, with revenues of $145 million climbing 3% as total subscribers increased 2% to 11.5 million.

AMC Networks — the company behind such cable channel brands as AMC, IFC and Sundance TV, as well as such streaming services as AMC+, Acorn TV and Shudder — reported a 13 percent drop in first-quarter U.S. advertising revenue Friday, following a 23 percent decline in the fourth quarter of 2023.
After returning to streaming subscriber growth in the third quarter of last year after two quarters of declines, the company added 100,000 users in the first quarter to end March with a total of 11.5 million subs, compared with 11.4 million as of the end of the year and 11.2 million as of the end of March 2023.

Ready to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actress? Before you do, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the likeliest contenders. Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”) being the only 2023 nominee eligible to return puts her in the frontrunner position and leaves the remaining slots open to a bevy of formidable newcomers and past hopefuls.
This year’s supporting actress candidates will not have to fend off reigning champ Jennifer Coolidge of “The White Lotus,” which is set to return in 2025 with an almost completely fresh cast. All nine acting nominees from the show’s most recent season are presumably finished playing their roles, as are 2023 featured female competitors Rhea Seehorn and J. As you prep your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Actress, make sure you check out our photo gallery showcasing the likeliest contenders. None of last year’s half dozen nominees – including winner Sarah Snook (“Succession”) – are eligible this time, leaving plenty of slots open for both newcomers and past hopefuls.
All of Snook’s 2023 challengers differ from her in that their shows are still in production (albeit delayed until at least late 2024). They are Sharon Horgan (“Bad Sisters”), Melanie Lynskey (“Yellowjackets”), Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), and Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”).
With all of those actresses out of the running, the current race leader is Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), who was recognized for the same series in 2020 and won Best Comedy Actress for “Friends” in 2002. Her “Morning Show” cast mate, Reese Witherspoon, is expected to join her in the lineup after having competed...

Rebecca Ferguson is becoming close to a household name. O.K., maybe “close” is a slight exaggeration, but her profile is bigger than her social media presence, and that’s primarily because her resume over the past decade is filled with one banger after another. “The Greatest Showman,” three acclaimed “Mission: Impossible” flicks, a Best Picture nominee in “Dune” and, likely, a second Oscar nominee in her latest blockbuster, “Dune: Part Two.” And now, she’s up for a potential Emmy nomination as Juliette, a “sheriff” in a post-apocalyptic civilization trying to discover the truth behind the gigantic, multi-level “Silo” humanity is confined to.

One of the biggest issues with Fallout that fans will take umbrage with is its short run time. The first season of Jonathan Nolan’s post-apocalyptic saga is only eight episodes long. At roughly an hour each, that’s just a single 9 to 5-hour shift! Definitely not enough time in the wasteland.
There’s nothing that can quite replicate the same feeling as Fallout. But some can come close. So, if you’ve finished the series and feel like you need more of the wasteland, here are five shows that can keep you busy until the second nuk—sorry, season drops.

Apple TV+ officially launched on November 1, 2019, the same month as Disney+ and about six months before HBO Max (now Max.)
The launch of Apple's original content efforts came when all of the major players were staking out their claims on the streaming economy following the success of Netflix.
Four and a half years into its existence, Apple has much to be proud of regarding Apple TV+
It has produced some global hits, led by Ted Lasso, and it became the first and so far only streaming service to make a movie that won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Apple TV+ likely does not draw the eyeballs that Netflix and some of its other competitors do. But in Apple's case, that doesn't quite matter.

My guest this week is Rebecca Ferguson. She recently reprised her role of Lady Jessica with Dune: Part Two, and plays the lead role in Silo, Apple TV+’s dystopian series about a community gone underground following an apocalyptic event. Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer-reluctantly-turned-sheriff, who uncovers alarming secrets while investigating a mysterious death.
Here, Ferguson describes the “intoxicating” experience of making the show, working with showrunner Graham Yost and her EP role, plus the elaborate and stunning sets and VFX work that went into it all.
As for Season 2 plans, how close will the show adhere to Hugh Howey’s original book series, on which it’s based? “I couldn’t possibly say,” Ferguson laughs, “but can you guess? No, don’t guess!”
Ferguson also addresses whether her character of Ilsa Faust would ever make a posthumous appearance in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two…
And, as always on the podcast,...

Today, Apple TV+ announced that Sunny, its 10-episode mystery thriller with a darkly comic bent, is set to premiere globally with the first two episodes on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through September 4.
Created by Katie Robbins, who also serves as showrunner, and executive producer and director Lucy Tcherniak, Sunny stars Emmy Award nominee multi-hyphenate Rashida Jones.
Jones also serves as executive producer, along with stars Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Judy Ongg, You, Annie the Clumsy, and Jun Kunimura.
Sunny stars Jones as Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As “consolation,” she’s given Sunny, which is one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband’s electronics company.
Though Suzie initially resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, they gradually develop an unexpected friendship.

“I was blown away from the first script I read,” admits triple threat Oscar, Emmy and Grammy winner Common about his initial reactions to the labyrinthine plot and setting of sci-fi drama “Silo.” For our recent webchat he adds, “I was like, ‘thank you God that they are even considering me for this role.’ And when I got to meet with Graham Yost and then eventually got the call that I was chosen for the role of Sims, I was like really in gratitude. This is one of the best characters that I will ever play,” he says, explaining further that “the crew we have, from hair and makeup to our camera crew to obviously set design, costume design. Man, I was like, ‘I am working with excellence!’ I don’t think I’ve been on a on a film or TV project where I looked everywhere, and it was just excellent,...
