Hamish Linklater has joined Season 2 of “Gen V” at Amazon Prime Video, Variety has learned.
Linklater will play the character Cipher, described as “the charismatic and charming newly-appointed Dean of Godolkin University. Trained as a scientist, he’s politically brilliant, and has the trust and admiration of officials at the highest level.”
The series, a spinoff of the popular Prime Video series “The Boys,” follows the students of Godolkin University as they train to become superheroes.
Linklater joins a cast that already includes Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, and Asa Germann. Chance Perdomo had also starred in Season 1, but the actor died in a motorcyle accident in March. The producers of the series have stated his role will not be recast.

Two producers who attempted to make a biopic about Roberto Clemente are now suing the baseball legend’s sons, alleging that the family twice sold the rights to Clemente’s life story.
Producers Jonah Hirsch and Angel Munoz announced plans in March 2023 to adapt the family-written biography, “Clemente: The True Legacy of an Undying Hero,” into a feature film. But after the announcement, the pair discovered that Thomas Tull, the former CEO of Legendary Pictures, was developing his own Clemente feature.
Legendary, which produced “42,” starring Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson, had optioned Clemente’s life rights in 2015, intending to produce a film based on the David Maraniss biography “Clemente: The Passion and Grace of Baseball’s Last Hero.”
According to the suit, the Clemente family initially claimed that Legendary had failed to make a payment, causing the life rights to revert back to the family. But that turned out to be untrue,...

Have you been seeing Error Code 42: “We’re sorry; we’re having trouble connecting you to the service…” when trying to sign into Disney Plus? You’re not alone. This issue has been popping up for years!
The two main culprits of Error Code 42 are a weak WiFi signal and a faulty internet connection. Pretty simple, right? Well, turning your modem off and on again doesn’t always solve the issue.
In 2002, Business Insider offered seven ways to troubleshoot the pesky problem. The one that works most of the time is signing out of your Disney+ account, followed by restarting your Apple TV, Roku, or game system.
If you’ve done both of those things and the dreaded 42 is still keeping you from watching Home Sweet Home Alone for the 20th time, you can always check to see if Disney+ is having an issue.

As Fire Country's second season continues to heat up, the show's central characters are being put through the wringer like never before.
And that means, of course, that the series' stars are facing new challenges in terms of heart-rending drama and pulse-pounding action sequences, some of which are unlike anything that's ever been attempted on network television.
We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Jordan Calloway, who plays firefighter Jake Crawford, for a conversation about his character, his career, and what the future holds for Fire Country.
Jordan, of course, is no newcomer to the world of television.
He got his start on the Nickelodeon sitcom Unfabulous way back in 2004, and his role on Black Lightning made him an important figure in the CW's Arrowverse.

While plot details are under wraps, the project has been described as a twisty, female-led thriller with pitch-black humor, set at a glittering destination for the ultra-rich. Ben Pugh, Peter Dealbert and Josh Varney will produce for 42.
A Goya Award nominee, Gullón is best known for scripting the surreal psychological thriller Enemy for director Denis Villeneuve. The Spider-Verse animated movies centered around Miles Morales spanning across different universes are now one of the most revered of Spider-Man movies. Setting a precedent for how superhero movies should be, the two flicks are a complete package having every ingredient (and more!) that makes a movie successful.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
While the first film went on to earn a much-deserved Oscar, the second film, Across the Spider-Verse, has been hailed as one of the best web-slinger sequels of all time. Yet the second movie would have never turned out to be as good if it was not for the test audience. With roughly six weeks to go before its release, the makers had to scramble to find a new ending since the fans hated the original one and ultimately it was one of Star Wars’ darkest moments that ended up inspiring them.

This Oscar season, Colman Domingo became the first Afro Latino to receive a Best Actor nomination from the Academy, for his powerhouse performance in “Rustin.” It’s a deserving nod for a performer who has only recently broken through, but already has an incredible resume of performances to his name.
Initially a stage actor, Domingo first gained acting recognition in 2008 for his role in the ensemble of “Passing Strange”; he earned Tony and Olivier nominations for his acclaimed role in the 2010 musical “The Scottsboro Boys.” Despite his onstage success, his attempts to cross over to television and film proved more difficult. In an interview with the New York Times, he spoke about considering quitting acting entirely after facing numerous rejections for bit parts in prestige dramas. But his fortune turned around after a series of successes with minor roles in films, among them “Lincoln,” “42,” and “Selma.” In 2015, he joined...

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

“Finestkind,” the new drama from “L.A. Confidential” and “Mystic River” screenwriter and “42” director Brian Helgeland, is not a great movie, but some of it is fascinating, even when it doesn’t work. Easy to dismiss because some of its broad, ridiculous, and suspension-of-disbelief turns—it’s essentially about a New England fishing community band of brothers that turn to drug dealers and spiraling criminal consequences in order to get out of the illegal activities jam they’re already in—the plot is fairly uninspired and breaks suspension of disbelief early.

Hollywood is overflowing with stories about films that took years of blood, sweat and tears to bring to the screen. Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind represents one of the longest kinds.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter of Mystic River and veteran director of such films as Legend, 42, A Knight’s Tale and Payback finished the script when he was 28. He’s now 62. “The joke is that I wrote it before Toby Wallace and Jenna Ortega were born and Ben Foster was 10 years old. It’s very strange, but everything happens for a reason. I just had to wait for this whole cast to grow up so I could cast them,” he explained at the film’s West Hollywood premiere on Tuesday referring to his actors who star opposite Tommy Lee Jones, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford.

Ending the year in signs is the hilarious, adventurous, sharp-tongued era of Sagittarius.

"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" has worked its way into the hearts of fans across the country since it was released this June. The movie stars Miles Morales as he meets many different versions of Spider-Man (and Spider-Woman) who are trying to keep the Spider-Verse itself from breaking apart. Their leader, Miguel O'Hara (aka Spider-Man 2099), tells Miles that he's not supposed to be Spider-Man at all and that if he doesn't let his story follow some specific canon events (like the death of his dad), the universe will fall apart.
Fans will have to wait for the sequel, "Beyond the Spider-Verse," to arrive, but in the meantime, they've come up with a lot of theories for it. One of the most popular is that Gwen Stacy, aka Spider-Woman on Earth-65, is actually trans. And now, the beloved movie is streaming on Netflix, letting even more fans into this chaotic story...

George Lucas' epic saga of space wizards, space fascists, and plucky everyday heroes long ago in a galaxy far, far away was ground-breaking in its VFX, yet its story looked to the past. Drawing from a myriad of sources across different cultures and genres, Lucas wove a fairy tale as elemental as any in its depiction of the eternal war between the forces of darkness and light.
Due to its success, the cast of "Star Wars" would forever be associated first and foremost with their roles in the film, sometimes to the chagrin of the actors who had led long and illustrious careers before that. For the likes of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels,...

The drones have spoken.
In anticipation of the upcoming season premieres of “Survivor 45” and “The Amazing Race 35,” CBS staged a massive event on Saturday night at Hollywood High School featuring 400 drones. Watch the sizzle reel video above. The site was chosen as it’s near the iconic Hollywood Sign, which is where the 13 “Amazing Race” teams will kick off their worldwide tour. The new seasons for both reality TV series will debut on Wednesday, September 27, with “Survivor” at 8:00 p.m. and “The Amazing Race” at 9:30 p.m.
The drone show, which is a part of CBS’ “Surprise and Delight” Fall TV campaign, included a reference to “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race” both supersizing to 90-minute episodes for the entire season. The move is a way for the network to fill its fall schedule in the wake of scripted fare being halted due to the writers’ strike (which seems...

I don’t know where to start on “Finestkind,” the saccharine, incomprehensible northeastern America fishing family drama from writer-director Brian Helgeland. As I watched this turgid muddle, a messy ball of nonsensical threads and worse performances, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Roger Ebert’s old maxim: No good film is too long, and no bad film is too short.
But what about a film so driven off course it needs a come to Jesus moment? “Finestkind” is that sort of picture. Clunky, nauseating, and perfunctory, it’s shocking that before the World Premiere screening in Toronto Helgeland called the movie a deeply personal work, the type of film he wished had been his first, and the kind he fears might be his last.
The introduction was enough to make you hope for a merely mindlessly entertaining flick. Unfortunately, “Finestkind” doesn’t even pass that lowest of bars.

“Finestkind,” the name of both Brian Helgeland’s new film and the high-line fishing boat Tommy Lee Jones captains within it, is one of those words that New Englanders find hard to define, but seem to have no trouble using in a sentence. It means quality — of fish, of people, of principles — and it sets the bar for the shaggy family portrait Helgeland crafts around two half-brothers wrestling with their place in the blue-collar New Bedford community.
The movie, alas, is just so-so, tripping over its own feet for the first couple reels until such time as the siblings cross the Northern Line to (illegally) dredge for scallops in Canadian waters, and then it gets good. Not the genre elements, mind you. There’s a stock plot in which the brothers need $100,000 to get the Finestkind ship out of impound, turning to a harebrained heroin-smuggling plot that goes sideways in...

After 42 years at Variety, awards editor and senior vice president Tim Gray has left the Hollywood trade publication to serve as executive vice president of the Golden Globes.
Gray will also serve on the board of the Golden Globes organization, working closely with president Helen Hoehne to expand the institution, which was acquired by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries following the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
As EVP of the Golden Globes, Gray will oversee its membership and board of directors. Gray leaves Variety after most recently serving as SVP. He previously served as editor-in-chief of the trade, helming the company through a for-sale period in the 2010s before Penske Media Corporation acquired Variety. Pmc and Eldridge own Dick Clark Productions under a joint venture, which means Gray will still work with Penske. He has also written a book titled “75 Years of the Golden Globe Awards.”

The following article contains major spoilers for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."
"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" took us back into the multiverse, starting with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) visiting Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) in the Brooklyn of Earth-1610. She then takes him to the Spider-Society, where Spider-Beings from all over the multiverse converge and help each other out.
Over the course of the film, Miles finds out that he wasn't ever supposed to be Spider-Man and, because of that, the universe of Earth-42 doesn't have one. Wha's more, he ends up having to evade the Spider-Beings who want to stop him from preventing a "canon event," as in something that must happen to create our web-slinging superheroes. As a result, Miles eventually makes his way to Earth-42, a place where his uncle Aaron (Mahershala Ali) is still alive, his dad is dead, and another version of Miles (Jharrel Jerome) has become...

If you didn’t grow up in Pittsburgh (which boasted rival baseball greats the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords) or watch Episode 5 of the 1994 Ken Burns docu-series “Baseball,” you may not know much about the Negro Leagues. That’s about to change.
Sam Pollard’s “The League” is an eye-opening slice of American baseball’s 154-year history. In fact, the recent rule changes imposed on the Majors by Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred were inspired in part by the practices of the Negro Leagues: while Babe Ruth focused on home runs (like many players today), these extraordinary Black athletes favored a fast, hit-and-run, base-stealing game.
“If you watch footage of Jackie Robinson from the ’40s and the ’50s, his style of play, his aggressiveness, all came from the Negro Leagues,” Oscar-nominated documentary director Pollard told IndieWire during a recent interview. “If you watch the players who integrated Major League Baseball,...

The word “franchise” is now familiar to fans of Harrison Ford, with multiple visits to the same characters in the “Star Wars,” Indiana Jones, “Blade Runner” and Jack Ryan (this must be some sort of record in franchise-starring).
In between, Ford got to exercise his acting muscles in such non-franchise films as “42,” “The Fugitive,” “The Mosquito Coast,” “Working Girl,” “Air Force One,” and of course “Witness,” the only movie to bring him an Oscar nomination. He has received other honors, including the American Film Institute life achievement award and the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes.
We’ve collected 15 of Ford’s best films and ranked them from worst to first, including the ones mentioned above. Tour our photo gallery and see if you agree or disagree with our choices.

They say that two heads are better than one, but when it comes to 2024’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sequel, it could be a case of six heads are better than one. A wild theory has emerged that the infamous Sinister Six will be the big bads of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, and if you were watching Across the Spider-Verse closely, the lineup could’ve been hiding in plain sight.
Across the Spider-Verse cast Jason Schwartzman’s Spot as the main villain, but alongside a smorgasbord of Spider-People, you might’ve spotted Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Donald Glover’s live-action debut as Prowler, and more obscure foes like Mooseterio from Earth-8311. Away from equally ominous theories that Miguel O’Hara/Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) will emerge as a vampiric villain in Beyond the Spider-Verse, the Sinister Six get an actual nod in the movie’s jaw-dropping finale.

This post contains major spoilers for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" and "Fast X."
It may be difficult to discuss the new animated dazzler "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" because, well, it's not finished. The film ends on a cliffhanger ending, yes, but in execution, it's not in a traditional sense. Earlier this year, the film "Fast X" also ended on a cliffhanger, where it looked as if most of the central cast had died, and the hero Dom (Vin Diesel) was trapped at the foot of a dam that was about to explode. "Fast X," however, was a light adventure film with few ideas in its head and a panicked, earnest need to entertain audiences through utterly ridiculous action set pieces.
"Across the Spider-Verse" is far more ambitious than that. It doesn't merely aim to thrill, but to explore the meaning of Spider-Man and interrogate the notion of superhero origin stories in general.

Sony is giving the Marvel Cinematic Universe a run for its money, and much like there’s no stopping the ever-expanding multiverse, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has weaved a complex web of Spider-People into the lives of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld).
While Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (Ssu) struggles to find where it fits alongside the MCU, Across the Spider-Verse brings us one step closer to a unified Spider-Family. We’re a far cry from those feuds between Disney and Sony – where it looked like Tom Holland’s wall-crawling hero would be annexed – but that doesn’t mean both sides are quite agreeing on everything.

The ending of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has as many threads as a spider’s web.
The superhero sequel ends on a major cliffhanger, which co-director Joaquim dos Santos likened to “The Empire Strikes Back” in an interview with SFX Magazine.
“We hope that it’s a satisfying tee-up for what’s coming in the third film, because you want people to be excited about what’s coming next,” co-director Kemp Powers added. “And it helps that we knew going in that this was part two of a three-part story. Since you already know that that third story is guaranteed, you can tackle it a bit differently. That being said, there’s a lot of key characters in this film, and there’s a story in this film that has an arc of its own that we needed to complete.”

Five years ago, 42, the British management and production company that counts Nicolas Hoult and Ralph Fiennes among its clients, made its way across the pond. Modeled on U.S. outfits like Entertainment 360 and Anonymous Content, 42 jumped into the crowded territory of American producer-managers, with a Beverly Hills-based office headed by co-founder and manager Josh Varney and producer Ben Pugh.
Early adopters of Netflix, 42’s slate has included streaming features like the highly viewed vampire movie Night Teeth and the sci-fi flick Outside the Wire, starring Damson Idris and Anthony Mackie. Theatrically, there has been the Cuban Missile Crisis drama The Courier, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and Focus Features’ The Silent Twins, which premiered at Cannes in 2022. On the M&a front, in 2020, 42 sold a minority stake to Lionsgate, and earlier this year, the company acquired Ob, a music video and commercials outfit.

Despite an uptick in sports movies, the days of Bull Durham, The Natural and Moneyball are long behind us
The crack of the bat. The roar of the crowd. The green grass and the brown dirt. These are the sights and sounds that bring joy to baseball fans every April, both in person and on the silver screen. Historically, baseball films are released in the spring to coincide with Opening Day, when even the most deadened fanbase can spare a smidge of romance and optimism. The Bad News Bears, Major League, Field of Dreams, Fever Pitch and 42 were all released in April. This year, there are none to be found, and that’s not a scheduling accident. A baseball film hasn’t had a significant theatrical release – in any month, let alone April – since 2016, when Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! landed with a thud at the box office.

The Biden administration announced Tuesday a new proposal that could block tens of thousands of people arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border from claiming asylum.
The 153-page proposed regulation is the most restrictive policy yet by the president’s administration to bar unauthorized crossings and echoes Trump-era immigration policies. Although there are some exceptions, the proposed rule presumes that migrants are ineligible for asylum if they entered the U.S. unlawfully. Among the new rules being considered is the introduction of a fast-track deportation process known as “expedited removal.

Harrison Ford will probably be remembered foremost as Han Solo — but not if he can help it. While Ford may well be the greatest movie star of the latter 20th century, it feels like he would've preferred to be a character actor, one that would sink into part after different part, not play the same archetype over and over.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ford mentioned that he "likes to change genres" from film to film. Not all of these genres have been successful for him, though he maintains that even his flops, "were entered with the best of intentions." Still, when Ford stars in an unsuccessful film like "Morning Glory" or "Cowboys & Aliens," he tries not to dwell on it:
"The first job of a movie is to make its money back. God knows why something doesn't work. It doesn't usually make that much difference...

Sony has offered up the first wave of marketing for their upcoming George Foreman biopic, namely a trailer, a poster and a release date.
“Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World” will debut theatrically on April 28, 2023, occupying the pre-summer slot that in previous years was home to “He Got Game,” “Obsessed” and “Keanu.” In 2023, that any studio is slotting anything resembling a big movie is a sign of a return to sanity within the theatrical ecosystem.
Directed by George Tillman Jr. and starring Khris Davis as Foreman, “Big George Foreman” stems from a story by Dan Gordon and Frank Baldwin and Goerge Tillman Jr. And a screenplay from Baldwin and Tillman.
The trailer, which you can watch at the top of this file, features the rags-to-riches true-life story of a young man who channeled his anger into Olympic glory and eventual...

The 42 Film, a new Madrid and Mexico City-based film-tv company of producer Alberto Müffelmann, an executive producer on early Sundance hit “Cassandro,” is forging a first slate of titles, led by “El Origen,” to be voiced by Gael García Bernal.
Based out of Madrid and Mexico City, the new shingle is headed by Müfflemann whose producer credits take in “Museum,” Alfonso Ruizpalacios’ Berlin 2018 best screenplay winner, Fernando Frías’ 2019 “I’m No Longer Here” – a jolting, timely piece of cinema I urge everyone to see,” said Guillermo del Toro – and 2013 best film Ariel winner “The Prize,” directed by Paola Markovitch.
The 42 Film underscores the drive into international co-production by the world big arthouse players as they seek to make titles of theatrical potential in a contracted market.
News of Müffelmann’s new shingle comes as “Cassandro,” starring García Bernal as the openly gay lucha libre wrestler Saul Armendáriz, has won large critical...

Jen Shah, the controversial star of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, was sentenced to prison on Friday morning in New York.
The 49-year-old was sentenced to 78 months in prison for running a telemarketing scam that targeted elderly Americans.
Ahead of the sentencing, prosecutors wanted the judge to give Shah 10 years in prison.
"At the defendant's direction, victims were defrauded over and over again until they had nothing left," prosecutors shared in their sentencing submission.
"[Shah] and her co-conspirators persisted in their conduct until the victims' bank accounts were empty, their credit cards were at their limits, and there was nothing more to take," they wrote.
If you watch The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City online, you know Shah's arrest played out on-screen, with her co-stars left gobsmacked by the events.
In the current third season of the Bravo series, Shah has maintained her innocence.

When Chadwick Boseman passed away in August 2020, the tragedy of his death felt wrenchingly multi-layered. We had lost an actor who, after “Get on Up” and “42” and “Da 5 Bloods,” was arguably on his way to becoming the greatest actor of his generation. We’d lost the rare sublime screen star who was also a culture hero — his slyly playful and forceful performance as T’Challa, the Wakanda-king-turned-leonine-superhero of “Black Panther,” made Boseman a mythic presence in pop culture, revered around the globe as a large-than-life figure who was also a winningly down-to-earth icon of Black fortitude and nobility. And, of course, we’d lost the anchor of the rare comic-book franchise that really meant something. “Black Panther” was a very good Marvel movie that was also grander than that. The film marked a paradigm shift: a long-overdue leveling of the blockbuster playing field, and a celebration (through its...

It’s “Drop your buffs” time on “Survivor 43,” aka the merge, and in CBS’s newly released sneak peek video (watch above), the Coco tribe reacts to the news after reading it via tree-mail. While the entire tribe celebrates what the future may hold, Karla Cruz Godoy remains (smartly) skeptical. She tells the camera, “While it’s exciting, yes, oh my god, the merge is coming … it’s ‘Survivor,’ right? And for the last two seasons we’ve seen that the merge doesn’t come easy.”
What she’s referring to is that during “Survivor 41” and “Survivor 42,” the castaways had to earn their way into the merge for the first time ever. First, they drew random colored rocks and one person with a grey rock had to go to Exile Island and live alone. Then, the remaining players competed in a challenge where the winners would earn a merge...

Survivor 43 spoilers reveal something that might come as really welcome news to die-hard fans of the show.
One of the big twists that became a focal point for Survivor 41 and Survivor 42 won’t be returning with the Fall 2022 season.
We are speaking, of course, about the Hourglass Twist that allowed one castaway to reset a portion of the game. It was used in conjunction with the merge and helped one person become the winner.
“For S43, we did not bring the ‘change history’ twist back,” Survivor host Jeff Probst told Parade.
“But I feel the need to remind future players, it doesn’t mean it won’t return in the future,” Jeff added to his statement, which keeps some mystery about what seasons down the road might see happen.
Reading between the lines, it appears that...
