The world’s at war with itself. And this restless vigilance against perceived attacks transcends sociopolitical spaces and permeates the air we breathe. One of these war zones is the German high school in İlker Çatak’s volatile drama The Teacher’s Lounge. Loaded up on weaponized paranoia, the classroom and the teacher’s room in this school vehemently reject any one narrative. What suffers is the fresh new teacher’s idealism, and the old, experienced ones’ notions of fairness and unfairness are questioned.

What Happens In The Film?
Perhaps a shot at truly influencing the young minds in a good way is all that spurred Carla Nowak’s decision to join the high school as the math and Pe teacher. But a frustrating string of thefts around the school has severely affected the environment of this educational institution. The teachers’ often unsophisticated approach to apprehending the thief...

At the large, modern school where the contentious events of The Teachers’ Lounge unfurl, Carla Nowak is the newbie instructor, fresh-faced and eager. By the end of the film, she’s more chastened and anxious than bursting with gung-ho spirit — which is not to say she’s been defeated by the insanity around her. But she has learned a thing or two about the absurdity of organizational politics in the digital age of the antisocial socials, laid bare in İlker Çatak’s pointed yet never simplistic drama.
The outside world is barely glimpsed in the movie, and the microcosmic significance of the school premises, somewhere in Germany, couldn’t be clearer. As a smaller version of a contemporary tinderbox, the community of teachers, students, administrators and office workers that Çatak and his cast inhabit never feels overly weighted with symbolism. Its powder-keg dynamics are fully alive and infuriating, even as they transparently replicate,...

Aged 85, Roger Gibson is preparing for his final edition as artistic director of the Chichester International Film Festival. He has built it into one of the UK’s leading regional film festivals since launching it in 1992.
Over the years guests travelling to the south of England festival have included Alec Guinness, Stephen Poliakoff, Kathleen Turner, Ken Russell, Mike Leigh and Ralph Fiennes. This year’s guest list is equally impressive: the festival has programmed retrospectives of work by Cate Blanchett and Hugh Bonneville, and both actors are set to attend,...

This post contains spoilers for the "Succession" series finale, "With Open Eyes."
The idea that Cousin Greg Hirsch (Nicholas Braun) would be the "winner" on "Succession" has been persistent, both as an earnest theory and a joke. I can understand why it took off during season 1; he was a naive outsider to the Roys' world, so the idea he'd climb the ladder and be corrupted along the way was plausible. However, as the show went on, it became clear that this wasn't Greg's story.
Greg has never been a player, he's a parasite. His Mo has always been to latch onto someone with power and money, such as Tom (Matthew Macfadyen), Logan, Ewan, Kendall, or Matsson. While Greg is definitely an empty suit in season 4, he never had much of a conscience. Even back in season 1, he destroyed the incriminating documents about the abuses at Waystar cruises and kept some...

The presidential election could swing either way this week on Succession… and so could the Roy family, honestly.
It’s election night, and Tom is feeling pressure to deliver big ratings for Atn. (He’s also getting no sleep, he tells Greg, due to “marital strife.”) Greg reveals he partied with Matsson and Oskar late into the night and asks Tom if he knew about Shiv and Matsson’s “business alliance.” Uh no, Tom did not know about that. Atn’s resident elections analyst Darwin tells the staff that Mencken is overperforming in exit polls, but it looks like Jimenez will edge him out.

Influencer Returns
There was a break-in at Janek’s house last night. The thief apparently stole the usual stuff, like money and some equipment. Janek’s mother, Milena, finds the cassettes of Alicja’s interview recordings missing. She informs the police. It might have been Alicja who stole the cassettes because she didn’t want anyone else to know what she was feeling. But we can’t tell for sure.
The same day, Alicja comes to school in her influencer avatar after more than a year. Her schoolmates: Patryk,...

A death in the family is still sending shockwaves through Succession this week, but the Roy siblings are starting to plot out their next chess moves, too.
In the wake of Logan’s abrupt demise, Kendall, Roman and Shiv are still in a daze as Sunday’s episode opens — and we learn that Shiv is pregnant, too! (Congratulations…?) Kendall heads to Logan’s townhouse for a family memorial and finds Marcia there, who surprises Kendall by claiming that she and Logan still spoke every day. Roman and Shiv doubt that, though, and Roman scoffs when he sees Cyd and the...

Even in the darkest times, there can still be laughter and joy. That's one of the lessons of Sarah Polley's "Women Talking," which used a sprawling ensemble cast to tell the story of Mennonite women who try to move forward together in the face of unbelievable trauma. The movie is nominated for three Oscars, including best picture. Three of the ensemble's younger members - Michelle McLeod, who plays Mejal; Kate Hallett, who plays Autje; and Liv McNeil, who plays Nietje - spoke to Popsugar about their experiences on set and why keeping laughter at the center of the weighty film was so important.
The movie, which went into wide release Jan. 20, has an all-star cast that includes Frances McDormand, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Rooney Mara, Ben Whishaw, Judith Ivey, and Sheila McCarthy. Hallett confesses that working with so many legendary actors was "incredibly intimidating." But, she adds, "I was...
