The untitled thriller will unfold in real-time at the White House as a missile attack threatens the United States. THR reports former NBC News president Noah Oppenheim, who also wrote Jackie, scripted the project based on Bigelow’s idea. No additional details were revealed but with Netflix now greenlighting the project, here’s hoping it kicks off before the end of the year.

“Unicorns” explores a world not seen much in feature films — the world of “gaysians,” the South Asian gay community in the U.K. The film, directed by Sally El Hosaini (“The Swimmers”) and James Krishna Floyd and written by Floyd, follows Aysha/Ashiq (charismatic newcomer Jason Patel) a queer, Muslim, South Asian drag queen living a double life who sparks a friendship then romance with white, straight mechanic and single father Luke. The film bowed to rave reviews at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival. Protagonist Pictures is handling international sales at AFM.
“Unicorns” is El Hosaini and Floyd’s third collaboration.
“I think mainstream society is very good at lumping very reductive identity labels on all of us. Obviously, in terms of sexuality, but I think in terms of everything in terms of race and gender and I’ve always felt that these things are very gray and very fluid.

Welsh-Egyptian director Sally El Hosaini had the opening night film at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival with “The Swimmers,” a Netflix drama about two would-be Olympic swimmers fleeing Syria for a chance to compete in Europe. She’s back at the festival a year later with “Unicorns,” codirected with James Krishna Floyd. It’s a quieter, less rousing drama that in some ways couldn’t be further from “The Swimmers,” but in other ways shares that earlier film’s determination to find moments of happiness and celebration in the midst of struggle.
“Unicorns” is a work designed to bring empathy for its two lead characters, a scruffy auto mechanic trying to raise a young son by himself and a British-Asian drag queen looking for moments of release in a life of hardship. At times it finds El Hosaini holding beats for too long, as she also did in “The Swimmers,...

Japanese anime legend Hayao Miyazaki’s much anticipated final film, now titled The Boy and the Heron in English, is set to open the Toronto Film Festival with a toned-down star presence on Sept. 7.
Studio Ghibli’s mysterious epic feature — with hand-drawn animation from Miyazaki — will have an international premiere at Roy Thomson Hall after being release in theaters in Japan on July 14. Gkids plans a theatrical release in North America later this year.
Studio Ghibli previously described the film as “a grand fantasy” loosely inspired by Japanese author Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 novel How Do You Live?, a coming-of-age story about the emotional and philosophical development of a young boy after the death of his father.

Studio Ghibli previously described the film as “a grand fantasy” loosely inspired by Japanese author Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 novel How Do You Live?, a coming-of-age story about the emotional and philosophical development of a young boy after the death of his father.

Seen as the main precursor to what you might expect on Oscar nomination morning, the nominations for the 2023 Ee BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, and Netflix’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” gained even more steam as a major awards threat, with an impressive 14 nominations in total. The movie equals Ang Lee’s 2001 “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” as the film not the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.
Other films that had a strong showing in overall noms include “The Banshees of Insiherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10 each), “Elvis” (9 noms), and “Tar” (5 noms), but possibly the most surprising inclusion was that both leads of the acclaimed indie “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” — Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack — scored leading actress and actor nods, respectively.

Edward Berger’s gripping, and gutting, World War I drama All Quiet on the Western Front continued its extraordinary award season run on Thursday when it picked up 14 BAFTA nominations, leading the pack, ahead of Martin McDonagh’s Irish drama The Banshees of Inisherin and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s metaverse action comedy Everything Everywhere All At Once, which received 10 nods each.
The 14 noms tied the all-time record for a non-English-language film, blowing past the 12 nominations secured by Michel Hazanavicius’ silent film tribute The Artist (2011), while equaling the tally scored by Ang Lee’s wuxia masterpiece Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon more than 20 years ago.
In addition to the expected nomination in the best non-English-language feature category, the war drama picked up nominations for best film for producer Malte Grunert, best director for Berger, best adapted screenplay (co-written by Berger, Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell) and a best supporting actor BAFTA nom for Albrecht Schuch,...

Many cinephiles had high expectations for “The Swimmers,” Sally El-Hosaini’s Netflix film about two Olympic swimmers and their harrowing experience migrating from Syria to Germany. But the film received largely negative reviews following its premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.
IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio wrote: “At nearly two and a half hours, Netflix’s Syrian migrant drama ‘The Swimmers’ is a long sit that goes to extraordinary efforts — from a treacly score to constant reminders that its protagonists are, you know, swimmers — to try and make you feel good, or at least feel anything. When thinking about festival openers, “The Swimmers” departs so much from Arab Film Festival’s opening film, “The Blue Caftan.” Maryam Touzani’s cinematic love triangle between a dying woman, her closeted tailor husband, and his assistant is achingly intimate. She aptly set up the Aff’s own LGBTQ focus this year, opening up the festival to the many complexities that come with queer romance. “The Swimmers,” on the other hand, is more visibly Hollywood-esque. This based-on-true-events fiction film opened TIFF earlier this year, played at Aff last week, and is gearing up for its US Netflix debut on Wednesday. Perhaps the latter deal has influenced the film’s own production, compressing it into a legible story for Euro-American audiences. Fitting of a streaming-only movie, “The Swimmers” repackages a harrowing refugee story into easily-digestible content, ready to be consumed at home.

Hollywood has its gallery of stereotypes, but in her new film The Swimmers director Sally El Hosaini saw a chance to make heroes out of modern, multifaceted Arab women
When I was a child, I used to write and hide secret letters to the archeologists of the future. In them, I’d describe my life and the world around me; a window into a specific moment captured for ever in a time capsule. Now, happily, I do that professionally.
I was born in Swansea, the daughter of a Welsh mother and an Egyptian father. When I was a few weeks old I was taken to Cairo, which is where my parents were living. Throughout my teenage years I never saw young women like me on screen.

On 18 March 2011, protests in Syria came to a violent head after peaceful demonstrators in the southwestern city of Daraa were fired at by armed forces. Three people were killed. That month marked the beginning of a brutal, multi-sided civil war that has since displaced more than 13 million people. Yusra Mardini is one of those people.
Mardini was 13 years old and living in the capital of Damascus when war broke out in her home country. Before then, she had enjoyed a regular life. She spent time with her family and partied with friends on the city’s rooftops. She also swam competitively. This review originally ran September 8, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The last decade has seen a plethora of movies about the crisis in Syria, most of them hard-hitting documentaries tracking the brutal effects of the war and the plight of those who’ve left and those who’ve stayed. At the same time, there’s never been a shortage of inspirational sports films where plucky athletes overcome obstacles to realize their dreams.
But “The Swimmers,” which opened the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday, is a rare mixture of the two: It’s an inspirational sports movie about a pair of Syrian swimmers, sisters Yusra and Sara Mardini, who fled from their home in Damascus during the Syrian civil war in 2015 to Europe, where they might have a chance to advance their athletic careers and swim in the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

True stories are always the best stories when it comes to inspirational and uplifting tales. Everyone loves an underdog. The new film The Swimmers is both a triumphant tale of underdogs but also works as a sports film as well as a political look at the refugee crisis around the world. By taking us on a journey of two sisters, Yusra Mardini and Sara Mardini, as they travel from their home in war-torn Syria to Greece and all the way to Germany, this film evokes a powerful and breathtaking tale of survival and turns it into an emotional rollercoaster.
The Swimmers tells the true story of two women whose journey diverged once they became refugees. But, the journey of Yusra from competitive swimmer all the way to the 2016 Rio Olympics is a wonderful tale that has to be seen to be believed. Director Dally El Hosaini masterfully blends the real...

Review: I will be honest and say I was jaded going into The Swimmers. Countless films have been made over the years about characters facing adversity in the form of war, abuse, and crime as well as underdog tales about athletes overcoming insurmountable odds to reach the pinnacle of their sport. In both cases, movies about either story have a tendency to be overwrought or disingenuous. Sally El Hosaini’s The Swimmers is neither of those things. Managing to bridge both narratives to tell a refugee story that is also a sports movie, this film is as inspiring as it is gut-wrenching as it makes you cheer for the characters to persevere against...
