Arriving on Prime Video today, "The Idea of You" (read our review) stars Anne Hathaway as Soléne, a 40-year old art gallery curator who finds herself in a surprising, romantic meet-cute with Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), a 24-year old who just so happens to be part of the famous (fictional) boy band called August Moon. But can their blossoming romance survive the hellish landscape of public judgment and media scrutiny that comes with life in the celebrity limelight?
"The Idea of You" (watch the trailer) is based on the best-selling romance novel of the same name by Robinne Lee, which many believe to be inspired by chart-topping singer Harry Styles, once a member of the boy band One Direction, and his well-documented romantic encounters with older women. With a filmmaker like Michael Showalter behind the camera -- who made his feature directorial debut with the romantic comedy satire "The Baxter,...

With 36 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Renée Elise Goldsberry on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2024 Tony nominations snubs was “Patriots.” Peter Morgan‘s history play about Russia earned three Olivier Award nominations last year, including Best New Play, Actor (Tom Hollander) and Featured Actor (Will Keen). In New York, it only scored one for Michael Stuhlbarg, who took over the role played by Hollander in the UK; Keen, who reprises his role as Vladimir Putin, did not score a nomination in a category stuffed with “Stereophonic” performers.
The revival of “The Who’s Tommy” also significantly underperformed. Gold Derby users predicted it would land three nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor for Ali Louis Bourzgui and Best Choreographer for Lorin Latarro, but it only earned one bid in the top revival category.

If you haven’t heard, it’s a massive season on Broadway, with a dozen shows opening in the next few weeks before the Tonys’ eligibility cutoff date (April 25).
There’s plenty of new NYC shows fighting for your attention, and also plenty of A-list actors trying to make their mark.
Just this month, Rachel McAdams will make her Broadway debut in the play “Mary Jane,” and Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne will take on the iconic role of the Emcee in a “Cabaret” revival on the Great White Way. (He recently played the dynamic role on the West End in London.) Daniel Radcliffe, Jeremy Strong, and Zoe Kazan are all currently doing great work as well, and are smart bets to get their first Tony nominations when those are announced April 30, 2024.
Read on for all the stars on Broadway this season — including Steve Carell, Jessica Lange, and more.

One of America’s most celebrated writers and one of Steven Spielberg’s go-to collaborators on films such as Munich and The Fabelmans spoke out today on the Haaretz Podcast about the controversy over Jonathan Glazer’s speech after Zone of Interest won Best International Feature Film at the Oscars.
Speaking about protests in the U.S. and their impacts, Tony, Emmy and Pulitzer Prize-winner Tony Kushner expressed surprise at what he called “the blowback after Jonathan Glazer’s really sort of unimpeachable, irrefutable statement at the Oscars.”
Asked if he identified Glazer’s comments, Kushner replied, “Of course. I mean, who doesn’t?”
For context, here is a portion of Glazer’s speech:

Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar acceptance speech after Zone of Interest won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film has drawn condemnation from more than a thousand Hollywood actors, creatives and executives over the past few days, but there are also some in the entertainment industry who have spoken in support of Glazer and his speech.
For context, here is the entirety of Glazer’s speech:
Thank you so much. I’m going to read, I’m afraid.
Thank you to the Academy for this honor and to our partners A24 Films for access and Polish Film Institute, to the Stead Museum for their trust and guidance, to my producers, actors, collaborators.

The Broadway production of John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt: A Parable, starring Liev Schreiber and Amy Ryan, has been extended by a week. The show will now close on Sunday, April 21.
The Roundabout Theatre Company’s performance opened on March 7 at the Todd Haimes Theatre. The performance company attributed the extension to a demand for tickets.
The production was originally scheduled to open on Feb. 29 but was delayed when Tyne Daly, who had been cast opposite Schreiber, dropped out due to an unknown illness. Ryan joined the ensemble as Daly’s replacement and has been playing the lead role of Sister Aloysius since Feb. 13.
Schrieber and Ryan have both been praised by critics for their pitch-perfect performances.
Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Zoe Kazan are also stars in the show.

Friday night at the Universal filmed entertainment soiree, the moment of fusion came when Snoop Dogg hit the room at the Sunset Tower and was immediately embraced by Oppenheimer stars Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh.
No wait. Surely, it was when Blunt took Robert Downey Jr. in her arms and a giddy little waltz ensued.

Perhaps it was when Colman Domingo sauntered in, resplendent in red. He stars in Netflix movie Rustin and WB’s The Color Purple, neither of them linked to Universal. Didn’t matter a jot. The warmth of the welcome for him was palpable. “I’m happy to be here,...

Andre Braugher passed away this week at the age of 61, and his loss has been deeply, acutely felt by pretty much anyone who had ever seen even a moment of his work. Braugher was a powerful actor, capable of humor and grace and humanity relayed through just a line or a look. His entire filmography is well worth revisiting, but his final film role, in 2022's "She Said," stood out to the actor himself.
In the film, Braugher played Dean Baquet, the real-life former executive editor of The New York Times who oversaw the bombshell article exposing disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein's long history of sexual misconduct involving women written by Megan Twohey (Carey Mulligan) and Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan). In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter around the time of the film's release, Braugher admitted that director Maria Schrader did something he'd never seen before: allowing the actors to perform without rehearsing.

There are a few things that we wish the lead characters of horror movies knew just as confidently as avid horror watchers: Don’t go down in the basement! Don’t go exploring the source of those strange noises! And, under no circumstances, don’t document the eerie things that might be happening in your apartment while you’re asleep, unless you want to open up a portal for some uncanny pests.
For BuzzFeed comic Adam Ellis (Augustus Prew), the cynical center of John McPhail’s soulless and haphazard genre entry “Dear David,” that last rule seems to mean nothing. In that, when strange, potentially supernatural stuff starts happening around his apartment, he elects to monitor the activity. Even worse, when he isn’t asleep he decides to engage with some very real creeps—that is, the growing number of online trolls who seem to attack him from all Twitter directions.

Daniel Radcliffe already reached a certain level of fame after doing the first couple of Harry Potter movies. But there was one film that was supposed to mark his transition from child star to heartthrob.

Filmmaker Chris Columbus saw the Harry Potter stars’ growth up close. He directed two of the series’ movies in Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets. According to Columbus, the actors matured greatly between the first and second films. Because of this, the filmmaker felt that there would be a change in heartthrob status between two of the franchise’s leads.
“In the last film the heart-throb was Tom Felton who played Draco Malfoy, everybody loves a bad boy, right.” Columbus once told Times (via Irish Examiner). “In this film it’s going to be more over to Dan. He’s...

Abortion rights took center stage at a rally Tuesday for striking film and television writers, who gathered with their supporters outside the New York City headquarters of Amazon on the first day of the retail and streaming giant’s “Prime Day” summer sale.
Linking abortion rights to labor rights, speakers said that film and TV workers in anti-abortion states are less protected today from pregnancy-related health emergencies than they were before the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v Wade last summer. That ruling turned abortion rights and restrictions into a state-by-state patchwork after the high court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
They also said production companies such as Amazon — which reimburses employee travel expenses for medical procedures including abortions — could be more vocal in their support of women’s reproductive freedom and medical care.

This story about “The Last Movie Stars” originally appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
As actor-director Ethan Hawke was working on “The Last Movie Stars,” he showed a rough cut of the six-part Max docuseries about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward to his mom. She told him, “Well, you managed to make two of the greatest icons of my life completely human. Though I’m not sure if anybody’s gonna like that.” Although “The Last Movie Stars” is chock-full of clips from Newman and Woodward films, the series beautifully folds in themes of family, betrayal, aging, grief and healing. We spoke with Hawke about his labor of love.

The series is so artful and impressionistic, but it’s also impressive as an act of profile journalism. What was that like for you?

Florence Pugh didn’t need superpowers to realize she was being judged for joining the MCU.
The Oscar-nominated actress, who earned breakout roles in independent films like “Lady Macbeth” and “Midsommar,” recalled the reaction to her starring in Marvel’s 2021 “Black Widow” alongside Scarlett Johansson and David Harbour. Pugh went on to appear in the Disney+ Marvel series “Hawkeye” and will lead the upcoming MCU film “Thunderbolts.”
“So many people in the indie film world were really pissed off at me. They were like, ‘Great, now she’s gone forever,'” Pugh told Time magazine. “And I’m like, no, I’m working as hard as I used to work. I’ve always done back-to-back movies. It’s just people are watching them now. You just have to be a bit more organized with your schedule.”

Sean Penn strongly backed the current Hollywood screenwriters strike while speaking at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, saying the dispute over artificial intelligence is “a human obscenity.”
Penn addressed the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike in a press conference for his new film, “Black Flies”, director Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s harrowing, gritty drama about New York paramedics. Asked about the strike, Penn said “the industry has been upending the writers and actors and directors for a very long time.”
“There’s a lot of new concepts being tossed about including the use of AI. It strikes me as a human obscenity for there to be pushback on that from the producers,” said Penn, a veteran writer-director in addition to being an actor.

This week’s streaming premieres bring a Bollywood-inspired action romp, a moving mother-son drama, and an important battle to save the Mushroom Kingdom. The latter is one of the highest-grossing movies ever made, and now you — I mean, uh, your kids — can watch it over and over again. But first, check out a Sundance indie that will have you hooting and hollering.
This week’s contender to watch: “Polite Society”
After a promising Sundance premiere, “Polite Society” opened to strong reviews and decent grosses for an indie without many well-known names. It’s part wedding comedy, part Tarantino, part “Kung Fu Hustle,” and part “Ocean’s Eleven.” Priya Kansara, best known as Miss Eaton on “Bridgerton,” stars as an aspiring martial-arts stuntwoman who will gladly break out the kung fu if it means stopping her sister (Rita Arya of “The Umbrella Academy”) from going through with her ill-advised marriage. “Polite Society,...

Picketers gathered outside Warner Bros. in Burbank today found themselves buoyed by a unique presence: Flavor Flav. The hip-hop icon-turned-reality star showed up to cheers from the assembled WGA supporters.
Dressed in a festive yellow-and-blue track suit and wearing a demure (for him) red clock around his neck, the Public Enemy also brought a boombox and blasted the group’s classic “Fight the Power.”
Possibly even better, Flav brought a lot of food.
“A true spread of burgers and pizzas at Warner Bros courtesy of Flava Flav!” wrote Abbott Elementary writer-producer Brittani Nichols on Twitter above a photo of the rapper delivering at least a dozen boxes of grub.

Paul Dano is sharing his support for the WGA strike even while abroad.
The actor, writer, and director revealed during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival press conference that he is ready to join wife and fellow filmmaker Zoe Kazan “on the picket line” after serving on the Cannes jury.
“My wife is currently picketing with my six-month-old, strapped to her chest,” Dano said. “I will be there on the picket line when I get home.”
The Writers Guild of America strike began May 2 after six weeks of unsuccessful negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, representing the likes of Netflix, Disney, Apple, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros., Paramount, Amazon, and more. Writers are demanding better pay, residuals structures, and protection against AI as a replacement tool for their work, among other concerns. Multiple productions have halted in solidarity with the demonstrations.

Members of the Cannes Film Festival competition jury, including Paul Dano, Brie Larson and president Ruben Östlund, talked about the ongoing WGA strike and Johnny Depp during the jury press conference on Tuesday, the opening day of the 76th edition of the fest.
Along with Östlund, Dano and Larson, Titane-directing Palme d’Or winner Julia Ducournau, I Am Not a Witch breakout filmmaker Rungano Nyoni, actor Denis Ménochet, Argentinian director Damián Szifron, Afghani-born, French-based filmmaker Atig Ranimi and Moroccan director Maryam Touzani make up this year’s jury.
Cannes is happening while back in the U.S., screenwriters continue to occupy picket lines in New York and Los Angeles, with contract negotiations still ongoing with the major networks and studios. When asked about the strike, Östlund offered, “I think it is great that people have a strong collegial feeling so people can go out and have a strike. I am definitely pro.

Ostlund and his Cannes jury discussed writers strike, Cannes protests.
Cannes Competition jury president Ruben Ostlund made a bold celebration of the festival at the 2023 opening jury press conference, stating that he would “rather have another Palme d’Or than an Oscar.”
Swedish director Ostlund has two Palme d’Ors to his name already, for The Square in 2017 and Triangle Of Sadness in 2022.
“The Golden Palme is the greatest film prize in the world,” said Ostlund. “For me, if I can choose between an Oscar or a Palme d’Or, it’s an easy choice. I’d rather have another Palme than an Oscar.

Brie Larson had few words about the decision to open this year’s Cannes Film Festival with “Jeanne du Barry,” a historical drama starring Johnny Depp. It’s the embattled actor’s first leading role in three years, following highly publicized legal battles with his ex-wife Amber Heard.
She mostly evaded the question when asked whether she’d attend the world premiere, which she isn’t required to do as a juror since it’s not playing in competition. “You’re asking me that?” she responded during a jury press conference on Tuesday. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand the correlation or why me specifically.”
When pressed, Larson added, “You’ll see, I guess, if I will see it. And I don’t know how I’ll feel about it if I do.”

Gritty drama She Said, about the two reporters who exposed Harvey Weinstein, joins newsroom classics from His Girl Friday to All the President’s Men
Around the time that Tom McCarthy’s 2015 newsroom drama Spotlight started piling up critics’ awards en route to the best picture Oscar, more than a few wags commented that film critics are not to be trusted on films that make the journalism industry look good: it’s the hand that feeds us, after all. Still, Hollywood tends to oscillate between two extremes on journalists: they’re either virtuous crusaders for truth and justice or leeching, corrupt sleazebags.
Maria Schrader’s solidly absorbing She Said (2022) takes the former stance. Its story of how New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey (studiously played by Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan) exposed Harvey Weinstein’s serial sexual abuse and triggered the #MeToo movement is fresh in everyone’s minds.

There are no details yet about the duo’s replacement though I hear UCP veteran Garrett Kemble, who joined Anonymous Content as EVP of Development for AC Studios last summer, reuniting with former UCP President Dawn Olmstead who is now CEO of Anonymous Content, is poised for a bigger role in light of Walak and Tager’s pending exit.

There are people out there who will tell you they don’t like romantic comedies. These same folks may as well confess that they’re dead inside, with a frozen void replacing where their heart once beat. You shouldn’t be their friend.
Romantic comedies are as old as the movies themselves. Generation after generation, audiences have sought out stories about the universal appeal (or agony) of love. And they’ve often wanted to laugh at it. When two characters—typically as photogenic as a camera lens demands—can generate real heat onscreen, and often channel that into knowing humor for the viewer, it’s more tangible than any visual effect. To wit William Shakespeare, it can create much ado about nothing, and it’s an absolute pleasure to laugh along with.
And despite the best efforts of some studios to drown the genre in the bathtub, rom-coms have endured in the 21st century,...

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” has become the first animated film to be saluted at the USC Libraries Scripter Awards, an annual honor that goes to the screenwriters of a film adaptation as well as the authors of the original work on which the film is based.
“Pinocchio” was named as a finalist alongside the screenplays for “Living,” “She Said,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Women Talking.” Because the original authors are also recognized, 2023 scripter nominees include 19th century Italian writer Carlo Collodi, who wrote the original version of “Pinocchio” in 1880; Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy, whose 1886 novella “The Death of Ivan Ilyich” was adapted by Akira Kurosawa for the 1952 film “Ikiru” and by Kazuo Ishiguro for 2022’s “Living”; New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, who wrote the book “She Said” about breaking the story of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct and were played in the film version by Zoe Kazan and Carey Mulligan,...

Outgoing BFI festivals director Tricia Tuttle has joined the National Film And Television School as Acting Head of Department for the directing fiction course.
Tuttle’s role at the Nfts will be part-time until she completes her duties at the BFI following BFI Flare, the organization’s Lgbtqia+ film festival, in March, at which point she will join the film school on a full-time basis.
Tuttle stepped down as festivals director at the BFI in October 2021 after a decade working for the organization. For the past five years, she has led the BFI London Film Festival and BFI Flare. Last year, under Tuttle’s directorship, the London Film Festival screened 164 feature films, including 23 premieres across film and TV, with highlights including the world premiere of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio and the international premiere of She Said, starring Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan.

A funny thing happened on the way to the American Film Institute saluting its picks for the Top 10 films and television programs of 2022 at its annual AFI Awards Luncheon on Friday.
Al Pacino showed up.
Mind you, Pacino was an invited guest who took the usual spot the AFI gives to an actor to deliver the final comments at the annual event; it’s not like he was crashing the party or anything.
Then again, he did kind of crash into the party, upending a sedate and classy event with a rambling, ramshackle and uproarious speech that eventually got around to him telling the story of his trip to the Oscars in 1974.
What exactly it had to do with the best filmed entertainment of 2022 was unclear, but it was Al Pacino and he has the right – and most certainly the ability – to hijack any event he wants in the most entertaining of ways.
