Upstanding married lawyer has an affair. Upstanding married lawyer is accused of murdering his mistress. It’s a tale as old as time, or in the case of this eight-part series, as old as 1990, when Scott Turow’s courtroom thriller novel was first brought to the screen in a feature film starring Harrison Ford. Now on Presumed Innocent on Apple TV+, Jake Gyllenhaal steps into the dock as Rusty Sabich, a Chicago prosecutor pleading innocent to killing his colleague and lover Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve). The lure of this adaptation from TV hitmaker David E. Kelley is not just the whodunit of it all but grappling with whether you believe such a guy-next-door, who shares two teenage kids with wife Barbara (Ruth Negga), could commit a vicious homicide. Watch the video above for an interview with Kelley and the cast. When asked if Rusty compares to any of the lawyers...

Courtroom thrillers about prosecutors landing in legal hot water are clearly a popular commodity over at Apple TV+. This trend is further fueled by their latest offering, Presumed Innocent, where Jake Gyllenhaal takes on the role of a perma-stressed chief deputy prosecutor, Rusty Sabich. The series is based on Scott Turow’s 1987 novel and adheres to a familiar, yet captivating formula. It follows Rusty Sabich as he becomes the chief suspect in the murder of his colleague Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve). Adding complexity, Rusty had an affair with Carolyn, creating an unreliable narrator trope that Gyllenhaal embodies with intensity. Gyllenhaal...

Jake Gyllenhaal had his mind blown when the actor had a revelation during an interview for Disney’s 2022 film Strange World. The actor starred in the film with Dennis Quaid who played the father of Gyllenhaal’s character. However, Gyllenhaal got the shock of his life when he realized that this was not the only time Dennis Quaid had played his father.
Jake Gyllenhaal’s Strange World || Disney
In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Jake Gyllenhaal came to the realization that he and Dennis Quaid had actually worked in a film before. The actors had recorded their lines separately for Strange World, which gave them little time to interact with each other during the production of the film. The press junket was where the actors spent most of their time together, and a prompt from the journalist interviewing them reminded Gyllenhaal that he had shared the screen with Dennis Quaid before.

Director Alan J. Pakula has a knack for adapting crime thriller novels to films, and I guess he does a pretty decent job of doing so. Klute and Pelican Brief were some of his films that I personally enjoyed watching, but his 1990 release, Presumed Innocent, takes the cake for me. It is a compelling courtroom drama that has the cynical quality of being a noir thriller. Now that Apple TV+ has announced a series based on the same novel written by Scott Turow, I thought it would be best to revisit the classic and go through the narrative in a detailed manner. So let’s find out what happened in the film so that you know what to expect from the Jake Gyllenhaal starrer series of the same name.

It didn’t take long for a scene from a 2000s comedy to turn into Owen Wilson’s iconic meme after the clip resurfaced and made rounds on social media. The words “Excuse me bruh” were practically plastered across everyone’s lips as the meme went viral.

Less than a month after his generally unnecessary Netflix adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s A Man in Full, David E. Kelley continues his visitations with the Ghosts of Literary Phenomena Past with Apple TV+’s eight-episode take on Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent.
Presumed Innocent was released in 1987, and the twisty character study of Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor who finds himself on the other side of the justice system when he’s accused of murdering a former colleague, breathed new life into dramatic jurisprudence. It was a smash hit, as was Alan J. Pakula’s solid 1990 big-screen version, which kickstarted a tiny subgenre of Chicago-set films in which Harrison Ford either did or didn’t kill the woman he was sleeping with. Both the book and the film were accused of either misogyny or myopia in their treatment of their female characters; both were products of a moment at which...

Apple TV+ is offering extended severance.
The hit science-fiction series “Severance” debuted its first image from the second season at the tech giant’s Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in Cupertino, California. It featured the show’s lead, Adam Scott, in an eerie white hallway holding some cerulean balloons, wearing an ID badge, and looking determined.
Production on the second season ended in April. The precise launch date hasn’t been announced, but since further glimpses were included in a “Coming to Apple TV+” video, one can expect it sometime this year.
“Severance” was created by Dan Erickson, and its first season was directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle. The show satirizes business culture with a process (called severance!) in which employees have their minds and memories effectively bisected, such that they can’t remember their home life while at work or their work life while at home. Complications ensue!

It makes sense that David E. Kelley would find his way back to the work of Scott Turow, one of the most popular authors of his era. They’re kindred spirits in a sense, both former attorneys who used their legal expertise to craft bestselling books or highly-rated TV mysteries. Turow came out of the gates on fire with a book that he would never really top in terms of popularity, 1987’s “Presumed Innocent,” made into a hit film with Harrison Ford in 1990 and now remade 34 years later as an Apple TV+ mini-series with Jake Gyllenhaal in the role of an ace prosecutor turned #1 suspect.

Plot: Following chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich, the series takes viewers on a gripping journey through the horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when one of its own is suspected of the crime. The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together.
Review: Everything old is new again. In 1990, Harrison Ford led the first adaptation of Presumed Innocent, based on the best-selling novel by Scott Turow. A critical success and the eighth-highest-grossing film of the year, Presumed Innocent was a masterful courtroom thriller from director Alan J. Pakula that also delivered one of the best twists ever. While it spawned two small-screen sequels, neither lived up to the original film. Over three decades later, we are getting a remake of Presumed Innocent from the one-two punch of David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams.

On paper, Presumed Innocent might sound like your standard courtroom thriller… but there’s no one you’d rather have writing one of those than David E. Kelley. The man has been cranking out quality TV legal dramas since the days of L.A. Law, and the mind behind Ally McBeal and The Practice delivers once again as writer and showrunner of this new Apple TV+ series, premiering this Wednesday. (I’ve seen seven of the eight episodes.) Kelley takes a familiar premise — one that’s quite similar to Paramount+’s far inferior Fatal Attraction remake, in fact — and spins it into a sturdy,...

Created by David E. Kelley and based on Scott Turow’s 1987 novel of the same name, Presumed Innocent is a twisty legal thriller revolving around a murky case and morally compromised characters. We won’t find out who’s guilty until the very end of the Apple TV+ series, but with each reveal we start to realize that nobody is entirely innocent.
Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), Chicago’s chief deputy prosecutor, appears to be living the dream, cleaning up the streets by day and returning to his luxurious home at night to crash on the couch with his beautiful wife, Barbara (Ruth Negga), and their two children, Jaden (Chase Infiniti) and Kyle (Kingston Rumi Southwick). But that seemingly idyllic dream turns into a nightmare when Rusty’s colleague and secret lover, Carolyn Polmheus (Renate Reinsve), is brutally murdered and he finds himself at the very top of the suspects list.

Conservative commentator Meghan McCain invoked a famous quote from the 2005 film Brokeback Mountain while criticizing her former co-hosts on The View.
McCain, daughter of the late Sen. John McCain, took aim at Sara Haines in a tweet Thursday. It came after a fan posted a clip of Haines referencing an unnamed past View personality who got “mad about Dr. Fauci” during a discussion about Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene‘s criticism of the former Covid-19 adviser.
In the clip, Haines and current View cohosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin reacted to Greene’s criticism of Fauci during a chat about decorum in domestic politics.
“It started, I remember, here, with someone here, getting so mad about Dr. Fauci. It felt like it happened overnight. We went from a pandemic…” Haines said, without explicitly using McCain’s name, later trailing off to address Behar’s apparent confusion over the reference,...

With a career that’s ranged 33 years — over three quarters of his life — Jake Gyllenhaal has covered nearly every type of character, genre, and form, but in a recent interview in The Hollywood Reporter, he said he’s now focused on taking on roles that “freak me out a bit.” Whether that means getting cut and learning to give and take a beating for Doug Liman’s “Road House” remake or wading through the moral and ethical murk of murder and infidelity in the upcoming Apple TV+ mini-series “Presumed Innocent,” Gyllenhaal is game for a challenge.
“The feeling I want to have is, can I do it?” said Gyllenhaal. “That it’s going to ask of me things that I don’t know about myself yet.”

Jake Gyllenhaal recently played an Mma fighter in the remake of Road House. The actor shared screen space with real-life UFC champion Conor McGregor. The film was a remake of the ‘80s classic starring Patrick Swayze and was extremely successful despite being released directly on Amazon Prime Video.
The success of the first film has reportedly led to a sequel being commissioned. Much like McGregor, another prominent athlete might just be in the running for the antagonist again, if the sequel decides to go the same route. After looking at boxer Ryan Garcia’s antics over the past few months, Road House 2 might have just found its new villain.

Before he was crossing box office milestones with his blockbuster "Dune" duology, Denis Villeneuve was trying to make a name for himself with smaller-scale psychological thrillers. His 2013 English-language debut, "Prisoners," went a long way to establishing the French-Canadian filmmaker as a directorial force outside of his homeland — a status which was cemented after one of Villeneuve's best films, "Sicario," arrived in 2015. But while "Sicario" is often cited as the film that put the director on the map, there are many, this writer included, who consider "Prisoners" to be just as good a film, and perhaps an even more immersive and haunting experience.
The film's appeal endures even now, with "Prisoners" topping the Netflix charts in 2023 and reintroducing itself to a generation that may have missed some of Villeneuve's pre-blockbuster films. There's good reason for that. Villeneuve's 2013 effort works on multiple levels, as both a taut thriller with plenty of...

Maggie Gyllenhaal has added another cast member to her upcoming take on The Bride of Frankenstein, and it's someone she knows very well.
In a new piece on the Spider-Man: Far From Home and Roadhouse star, THR reports that Jake Gyllenhaal has joined the cast of The Bride!, but don't reveal any details on his character.
Gyllenhaal (Maggie) recently took to Instagram to share the first ever production stills from the film, giving us a glimpse of Christian Bale as Frankenstein's Monster, and Jessie Buckley as the misunderstood creature's titular Bride.
We first heard about this project back in 2022 when it was being developed for Netflix, but a follow-up report indicated that the film had been shelved shortly after the Hollywood strikes got underway, and was being shopped elsewhere. More recently, we'd learn that Warner Bros. had acquired The Bride!, which is now set for a theatrical release on October 3rd,...

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck once appeared in a couple of movies together during the first phase of their relationship. But Kirsten Dunst believed this had an unwanted impact regarding celebrity couples in movies.
How Kirsten Dunst felt ‘Gigli’ affected making movies with her own partner Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez | Christopher Polk/Getty Images
Gigli came out during a particular low-point in Affleck’s career. A few of his movies weren’t doing too well at the time, and his relationship with Lopez was being scrutinized in the media. Gigli didn’t help matters, either. The Martin Best-directed comedy film saw Lopez and Affleck collaborating for the first time. Because of the attention their relationship was generating with the media, some felt this would’ve translated into box-office success.
But the theory couldn’t have been more wrong, and Gigli just opened Affleck and Lopez up to more criticism.

When images started to surface of Jake Gyllenhaal filming a UFC fight scene for the Road House remake, audiences got a glimpse at how the Doug Liman film for Amazon would differentiate itself from the original Patrick Swayze film from 1989. The consensus was that making Dalton a former professional fighter was an interesting twist that wouldn’t make the remake a complete copy of the Swayze film. However, the die-hard fans would remain skeptical. Now that the film has been released on Prime Video (along with the controversy of not being given a theatrical window), many agree that it doesn’t have the heart of the original, but there is still a division among the viewers on who may have still found it serviceable.

Jake Gyllenhaal pulls his glasses out of his jean jacket pocket, the Coke bottle lenses in them strong enough to correct his 20/1250 vision. Yes, you read that right. These are not Internet Boyfriend glasses, to be styled with a fuzzy cardigan and a rakish smile. These are I Literally Can’t See glasses. Looking through them with normal vision feels like being on some sort of a hallucinogenic.

Broadway had been making progress toward an industrywide recovery, but new data shows halted momentum in the most recent season.
According to data from the industry trade group The Broadway League, overall grosses for the 2023-2024 season were down about 2.5 percent compared to the previous season, reaching $1.54 billion compared to $1.58 billion the prior year. And compared to the 2018-2019 season, the last full season before the pandemic closed all theaters, grosses were down 17 percent.
Even if viewed as largely flat compared to last season, that spells trouble for the industry, given the rising cost of producing a show.
“Every year our expenses go up at least five percent, if not more, because we so outpace inflation,” says Ken Davenport, producer of the Neil Diamond musical A Beautiful Noise. “So flat is terrible.”
