A new Johnny Cash song, “Spotlight,” has been unearthed for the late musician’s forthcoming posthumous album, Songwriter.
With The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach on guitar, “Spotlight” is a warm, bluesy mid-tempo number from Cash. It highlights the country icon’s crystal-clear baritone and features an entrancing guitar solo from Auerbach in the bridge. Helping elevate the song are flourishes of strings, some strutting bongos, and majestic production. Stream “Spotlight” below.
Johnny Cash wrote and recorded “Spotlight” for a demo session in 1993, and his son, John Carter Cash, resurrected his vocals and arrangement for the new album. “Spotlight” is the second offering from Songwriter, following earlier single “Well Alright.” Like each song on Songwriter, “Spotlight” was written solely by Johnny Cash.

Pearl Jam concluded the spring US leg of their 2024 tour with a rousing hometown show in Seattle on Thursday night. Among the many highlights was a cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” performed solo by frontman Eddie Vedder.
“In any other city there’s no guest list as big as the one that we have when we’re in Seattle,” Vedder said in introducing the song. “To be honest, I wish it were longer. There are certain names that I so deeply wish were on the guestlist tonight, but we lost them too early and in ways that we could never imagine. Damnit if I can’t stop thinking about them. But that’s a good thing too.”

From United States Presidents to their wives and First Ladies, to Supreme Court Justices to scientists and brilliant minds, nobody is off limits, especially if the stories are triumphant. Others have more tragic endings.

The cape was once the kingmaker. But the movie stars at the top of studios’ most-wanted lists today have largely avoided cinematic universes. Instead of being pulled up to the A-list with a call from Marvel or DC (like earlier breakouts Chris Evans, Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa), today’s top talents — according to THR’s survey of executives, managers and agents — were anointed by auteur directors. Austin Butler was tapped by Baz Luhrmann for Elvis, while Denis Villeneuve gave nearly a third of this list their first franchise movie with his Dune features.
Today’s young stars are also less formulaic than their predecessors of just a decade ago, whose indie debuts or tiny Oscar turns were quickly followed by IP-backed film series. They are more agnostic, too, moving easily among studio filmmaking, indie efforts and television. Unlike past eras, there’s also not a single “type” dominating the group.

Kicking off the start of Summer with the big Memorial Day weekend, a new documentary poses the question: What’s the “go-to” music for this season? Well, for the past 63 years, it’s been these pop icons out of Hawthorne, California, of course. Their signature songs invoke memories of ocean waves hitting the sand as eager athletes run through the foam with their trusty boards. Interestingly only one member of the original band surfed, though when watching a blonde adonis catching a “tasty wave”, you automatically, in your head, recall the sweet infectious harmonies of The Beach Boys.
After opening with glorious footage of an electric 1975 outdoor concert (naturally in the bright Summer sun), the doc springs back 15 or so years to the modest suburban home on 119th Street when the eldest Wilson brother Brian became fascinated by the careful vocal craftsmanship of the Four Freshmen along with other musical acts.

From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.

Dolly Parton took a major step in the direction of being a country singer when she appeared onstage at the Grand Ole Opry. Parton was still a child, but she had a sizable ambition and an aversion to the word “no.” She set her mind to appearing on the stage and made persistent attempts at getting there. Unfortunately, she was too young to sing at the Opry. It took some assistance from another performer to get her in front of the audience.
Dolly Parton shared how one country singer helped her at the start of her career
After Parton and her Uncle Bill decided she should perform at the Grand Ole Opry, they made their way to the historic venue. Once they arrived, full of ambition, manager Ott Devine informed the singer that she was too young to perform.

When Dolly Parton realized she wanted to be a musician, she set her sights on performing at the Grand Ole Opry. She put on small performances, but she and her Uncle Bill never lost sight of their goal of having her get onstage at the historic venue. When she finally had a chance to, she only got onstage because she broke a rule.
Dolly Parton broke the rules at the Grand Ole Opry
Parton’s Uncle Bill firmly believed in her star power, and he saved up enough money to bring her to the Opry.
“Nobody ever told me that you couldn’t do anything you wanted to do,” Parton said in the book Dolly by Alanna Nash. “I just always thought, ‘Well, all you gotta do is just go there and if you sing well, you can be on the Grand Ole Opry.’ Gettin’ the nerve was probably the hardest part,...

Grammy lineups are lucky if they include one bona fide classic. But it is the rarest of occasions when we get three nominated together. That was the case in 1970, where The Beatles’ “Abbey Road,” The 5th Dimension’s “The Age of Aquarius” and Crosby, Stills and Nash’s self-titled record were all up for Album of the Year. All three had strong narratives that could have led to possible wins … but they didn’t. Perhaps infamously, the Grammy went to jazz rock band Blood, Sweat and Tears for their successful self-titled album. While nowadays that could be dismissed as a bad win, the reality is that there were a lot of reasons why the band won and why their competitors didn’t. So let’s look more deeply into the race.

Daniel Kramer, a rock photographer who captured some of the most iconic Bob Dylan images of the Sixties, including the covers of Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61 Revisited, died April 29, Rolling Stone confirmed. He was 91.
Kramer first encountered Bob Dylan when he watched him perform “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll” on The Steve Allen Show in 1964. “The lyrics were startling to me,” he told Rolling Stone in 2016. “They were so poetic. I knew this wasn’t an ordinary event. I knew this guy was special.”

Carin León feels like he’s been hallucinating the last three weekends.
He’s running on just a few hours of sleep and the high of making history at Stagecoach, where he became the first música mexicana singer to perform at the country festival. Onstage, León looked like any other country act, sporting a sleeveless button-up shirt and a matching cowboy hat. But instead, he performed his rootsy, romantic rolas, backed by a full banda: tubas, accordion, and all.
León sees his efforts to blend country music with música mexicana as a poker match.

The 11-track collection features songs Cash had written over many years, then finally put to tape during a demo session at Lsi Studios in Nashville in early 1993. An unreleased Johnny Cash album will finally see the light of day, thanks to his son John Carter Cash and a team of world-class country musicians. Titled Songwriter, the project was recorded in 1993, and will be released on June 28th via Mercury Nashville/UMe.
Songwriter features 11 songs written solely by Cash over the course of his then-40-year-long career. He made the album at Lsi Studios in Nashville during a period when he was between contracts, and it ultimately ended up shelved until his son, John Carter, and producer David “Fergie” Ferguson sought to finish it with a group of musicians who played with Cash, including Marty Stuart, Pete Abbott, the late Dave Roe, and others.

Country star Miranda Lambert recently shared a sweet tribute to the original Man in Black, Johnny Cash. So, what did Miranda do recently to pay tribute to the legend?
Johnny Cash Is A Music Icon
Even for people who are not that into country music, they’ve undoubtedly heard of the legend, Johnny Cash. In many ways, Cash is to country music what the Beatles are to rock and roll. However, Cash is remembered for more than just his music, even two decades after his passing.
Johnny Cash was a pioneer, and a maverick of his time. In addition to succeeding on the charts, his music resonated with so many for the authenticity of his lyrics, as much as for the swagger he had as an individual. Post Malone’s country streak is still going strong. On Wednesday night, the musician took the stage at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville for a surprise performance during radio and television personality Bobby Bones’ annual Million Dollar Show concert. His contribution to the country-centric set was an acoustic cover of Hank Williams’ 1952 record “Honky Tonk Blues.”
“Well, I left my home down on the rural route / I told my paw I’m going steppin’ out / And get the honky-tonk blues,” Malone sang, strumming the song on guitar. His appearance rounded...

Carlene Carter issued a statement Friday welcoming Beyoncé to the family upon release of her new album, Cowboy Carter.
Carter is the daughter of country royalty in mother June Carter Cash, and is a star in her own right.
“I’ve caught wind of some negativity over the release of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, her new country album,” Carter said. “As a Carter Girl myself and coming from a long line of Carter Girls, I’m moved to ask why anyone would treat a Carter this way? She is an incredibly talented and creative woman who obviously wanted to do this because she likes country music, In my book, she’s one of us Carter women and we have always pushed the boundaries by trying whatever music we felt in our hearts and taking spirit-driven risks.”
The Carter family had some of the earliest country recordings, dating to the 1920s and Mother Maybelle Carter.

Post Malone has made himself an indispensable guest vocalist lately. The Texas musician, who released his own album Austin last year, is showing up on the two biggest LPs of the year. In May, he’ll appear on “Fortnight,” the opening track of Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poet’s Department, and now fans can hear him dueting with Beyoncé on “Levii’s Jeans.”
The song, off her new album Cowboy Carter, sees the Texas natives joining forces to pay tribute to Levi’s, a denim brand made famous by cowboys.

There may not be a more daunting artist from the twentieth century (and beyond) to grapple with in any form than Bob Dylan. The folk music legend is regarded by many as the most influential songwriter of the last 60-plus years, and, at the age of 82, is just as relevant today as he was in his rebellious young adulthood. He pricked the nation's conscience in the early 1960s with classic protest anthems like "The Times They Are a-Changin'," "Blowin' in the Wind" and "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall," inspiring many a teenager and twentysomething to pick up an acoustic guitar and sing their truth. Then, in what his folkie colleagues/admirers took as a betrayal, he went electric. This would be the first of many confounding transformations. In a way, he kept throwing fans off the scent of the big "Who is Bob Dylan?" question by, every few years, getting...

Twenty years ago, I saw a movie that changed my life. I also saw Jersey Girl. Not a bad movie. I enjoy it to this day - especially George Carlin as the gruff but loveable grandfather. It’s a fun movie and I recommend you check it out if you haven’t - it really got a bad rap. But that’s not what we’re here to talk about. We’re here to celebrate Zack Snyder’s 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead.
In March of 2004, some friends and I decided to do a double feature of Jersey Girl (because we liked Kevin Smith) and Dawn of the Dead (because it looked scary). Jersey Girl worked out fine and we all had a nice time, and then Dawn of the Dead had us talking excitedly for the rest of the night. It had an immediate effect, giving us the...

Production is now underway on “A Complete Unknown,” the coming Bob Dylan feature directed by James Mangold and starring Timothée Chalamet as the iconic American musician. Set photos from the New York City shoot have emerged online, offering a first look at the 28-year-old actor in costume.

On the opening night of Bob Dylan’s 2024 tour, a fan reportedly got under his skin by screaming out, “Play something we know.” The fact that he followed the heckle up with a brand new arrangement of “When I Paint My Masterpiece” that echoed Irving Berlin’s “Puttin’ On The Ritz” (or possibly “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)” by the Four Lads) is surely coincidence since such things are worked out in advance, but later in the night he did pull out a surprise by covering the 1956 Jimmy Rogers song “Walking By...

Two of the most distinct voices in music history are undoubtedly Bob Dylan and Elvis Presley. But if you can believe it, the story goes that the two never actually met.
