In 2002, Tobey Maguire became the first live-action Spider-Man in the Sam Raimi directorial that laid the foundation for the character to be developed through the franchise and subsequently in the MCU. The actor-director duo went on to collaborate in 2 more films that completed a successful trilogy.

In 2007’s Spider-Man 3, fans got to witness Maguire donning the famous black suit which was first introduced in the comic books in 1984’s Amazing Spider-Man #252. This costume that defined a more sinister and dark Spider-Man, was initially designed to look very different from what the actor finally wore in the film.

Jessica Chastain always manages to turn heads with her fashion choices. I find her style bold and daring; for me, she’s a total red carpet icon. She constantly impresses me with her ability to pull off unique looks that perfectly flatter her figure.
That said, I am not as blown away by her latest outfit. It isn’t a bad look by any means. Her look is polished and chic. However, it doesn’t quite have the same wow factor I’m used to seeing from her.

J.K. Simmons initially made Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy more worthwhile via his role as J. Jonah Jameson. The angry, mustached, and always-smoking J. Jonah Jameson made Peter Parker’s life absolute hell, until the time Maguire got a bit of the Venom attitude we see Tom Hardy portraying today.
J Jonah Jameson in No Way Home | Marvel
Simmons then returned as a variant of his iconic character in 2022’s No Way Home, but fans were given multiple reasons to be unhappy about the reprisal. That also seems to be true with respect to the actor himself, who claimed in an interview that he actually did advise the creators to stick to the rendition which initially became famous via the Sony movies.
However, as the bald head, and his arguably annoying persona in No Way Home proves, his advice was not heeded.

Leslye Headland is not a tentative person. She pauses before speaking, but not because she’s waffling about what to say. More because she’s a writer and how is almost as important as what she says, and also because we’re talking about The Acolyte, her upcoming TV show set in the Star Wars universe during the High Republic (for the non-saber-pilled among us, that’s about 100 years before The Phantom Menace, the beginning of what’s referred to as the Skywalker Saga, when Sith happens). One aspect that helped Spider-Man pop off in the 60s was his everyday struggles, which helped fans relate to the character, and it soon became the defining aspect of the character. Moreover, this core theme was beautifully translated into the big screen, thanks to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, which didn’t drop the ball while showcasing a hero’s struggle with responsibilities.
However, in the Tom Holland-led trilogy, the personal struggles of the character were sidelined after the first film, as being part of the MCU, the character had bigger problems to worry about. But it appears that the MCU is planning to go back to the character’s roots with the upcoming installment.

Considering Marvel and DC’s vast universe, there are several characters who are yet to make onscreen appearances. But among the few who made their way to the silver screen and TV shows, Spider-Man became the most renowned and appreciated superhero. Thus, when the character first appeared onscreen under Sam Raimi’s direction, several actors tried their luck during auditions.

One among the crowd of A-listers who hoped to crack the audition for a leading role in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man was legendary actress Elizabeth Banks. According to reports, Banks auditioned to play Mary Jane Watson in the original Spider-Man movie. Unfortunately, as the role went to Kirsten Dunst, the actress had to settle for a smaller role in the franchise.

The movies are in trouble. Or so we’re told frequently and often in the trades, on social media, and simply among industry gossipers convinced the sky is falling. In terms of ticket sales for conventional blockbusters, this summer is indeed off to a sluggish start. But if you focus only on the nickels and dimes, you likely are missing why you fell in love with movies in the first place.
And there’s been quite a bit to love, or at least respectfully admire, in the first half of 2024. While a few genuinely great blockbusters on this list have struggled, others have thrived. Perhaps more impressive though is the handful of indie and prestige films which have found healthy Gen Z and millennial audiences and (would wonders never cease) benefited from costing less than a cool quarter-billion or thereabouts to produce. Likely in part due to so many delays...

Tobey Maguire went the extra mile to convince producers that he was the perfect guy for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. Several actors from Leonardo DiCaprio to Yellowstone‘s Wes Bentley were considered for the role, but Raimi was impressed with Maguire’s performance in The Cider House Rules. The studio didn’t think Maguire was the adrenaline-pumping superhero for the film, but The Great Gatsby actor proved them wrong.

Alex Garland’s Civil War is coming to DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this July: more details on the release here.
A bit of a surprise this. Entertainment Film Distributors don’t put out too many films these days, and certainly hasn’t supported the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray physical disc format before. Its maiden release on the format is going to be a fine one though: Alex Garland’s Civil War, which proved a success in cinemas earlier this year.
Boasting an ensemble led by Kirsten Dunst, the film was written and directed by Garland, and has clearly resonated, heading past $100m at the global box office. The movie, as you may well know, is quite a rage-filled piece of work, an entirely fictional piece about a divided America tearing itself apart. Thank the lord for the escapism of the movies.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck once appeared in a couple of movies together during the first phase of their relationship. But Kirsten Dunst believed this had an unwanted impact regarding celebrity couples in movies.
How Kirsten Dunst felt ‘Gigli’ affected making movies with her own partner Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez | Christopher Polk/Getty Images
Gigli came out during a particular low-point in Affleck’s career. A few of his movies weren’t doing too well at the time, and his relationship with Lopez was being scrutinized in the media. Gigli didn’t help matters, either. The Martin Best-directed comedy film saw Lopez and Affleck collaborating for the first time. Because of the attention their relationship was generating with the media, some felt this would’ve translated into box-office success.
But the theory couldn’t have been more wrong, and Gigli just opened Affleck and Lopez up to more criticism.

While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has dominated the superhero genre in recent years, the film that ruled fans’ hearts even before the Avengers assembled, was Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. We all have that one movie critics hated, but we hold dear to our hearts. For instance, Drop Dead Gorgeous has a laughable rating of 47% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film’s pageant scenes and Kirsten Dunst’s performance make it unforgettable. Kirsten Dunst and Denise Richards’s pageant costumes alone should bump the film to a 70% rating…at least. A Hidden Gem among Romantic Comedies I was just as surprised to find out that The Wedding Planner holds an abysmally low rating of 17%. Big-budgeted films with a stellar cast are normally expected to perform better at the box office than low-budgeted films. However, the 2024 box office so far has seen more major flops, big-budget films failing to make it to the breakeven point, and low-budgeted movies garnering millions across the world. And so it was for actors like Henry Cavill and Ryan Gosling, who despite their fanfare and talent, failed to woo the audiences with their feats.
Henry Cavill in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare | Lionsgate Films
While Henry Cavill so far has recorded two flops this year (Argylle & The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare) despite some pretty astounding collaborations, last year’s box-office dominating stars Gosling and Emily Blunt failed to live up to expectations with their action-packed romantic comedy, The Fall Guy.
So while Henry Cavill and Ryan Gosling try to figure out what made their movies perform way below expectations, here...

The most controversial film of 2024 has already been released and is attracting criticism from all sides. Written and directed by the visionary filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Civil War has proven to be a massive hit for the A24. Civil War has everything you need including striking visuals, a gripping story, and complex characters. While there are people from both sides of the political aisle criticizing the film for not picking a side, I think that Garland did a wonderful job at showing us a broken America without blaming any political party for it.
Civil War is set in a dystopian future America suffering from a civil war as a team of military-embedded journalists race against time to get to Washington D.C. to interview the President before rebel factions take over the White House and kill the President. I’d rather not go into why Alex Garland picked America to be the war zone in Civil War, although I can think of more than a couple reasons that might’ve motivated the choice. And I’ll tell you why I think that discussion would be a waste of time. In Garland’s Civil War, starring a breathtaking Kirsten Dunst and a shockingly effective Wagner Moura, the setting is a terrarium of pain and death presented and observed with near-unflinching neutrality. Desensitized neutrality is mandatory in war photojournalism. In the story of Lee, Joel, Jessie, and Sammy chasing a scoop on the civil war that’s broken out and a denial-driven fascist in the Oval Office, America is merely a war hawk. It could’ve been any other place, any other time. And the only thing that’d remain relevant is the frustrating futility of it all.

As if “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” isn’t enough of a caffeine boost, this week’s digital debuts include no fewer than four heart-pounding thrill rides. First up, a movie-star vehicle that doubles as an ode to stunt work.
The contender to watch this week: “The Fall Guy“
David Leitch‘s action comedy adapted from the ’80s TV show of the same name had all the makings of an early summer blockbuster: adrenaline-pumping stunts, charismatic lead turns from Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, and generally favorable reviews. So why is Universal dropping it on VOD just 17 days after the release? Probably because “The Fall Guy” is perceived to be something of a flop. That line of thinking isn’t totally fair considering the movie has made $128.3 million and counting worldwide. Still, the studio expected more, especially because “The Fall Guy” seems like it will just barely recoup its budget in theaters.

Ruben Östlund's follow-up to Triangle of Sadness, his second Palme d'Or winner, has been on the news. Fred Roos, the longtime producing and casting collaborator of Francis Ford Coppola, has died at age 89.

A24 picks up the new film from Ruben Ostlund, the director of Triangle Of Sadness – and Kirsten Dunst and Keanu Reeves lead the cast.
We’d imagine that one of the most coveted projects to go to market at Cannes this week is Ruben Östlund’s follow-up to the critically celebrated 202 film, Triangle Of Sadness. It’s called The Entertainment System Is Down, it boasts a glorious premise, an admired director and a leading trio of Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl and Keanu Reeves. Oh, and let’s not forget the giant plane that the production bought before it even found a studio backer.
Whilst studio backing of some sort was never really in doubt given the star power that Östlund has attached to the project, Östlund will likely be particularly happy to have A24 as a partner for the US rights, given that this looks to be one of the...

A24 acquired the U.S. rights to Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down this weekend.
The eight-figure deal gives A24 U.S. distribution rights to what will be the Swedish film director’s second English-language movie, after 2022’s Triangle of Sadness. The latter won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, which marked Östlund’s second time taking home the prize after 2017’s The Square.
Like his last movie, The Entertainment System Is Down is also a social satire, this time set on a long-haul flight in which the entertainment system fails and passengers must figure out how else to fill their time. Shrek 2 turns twenty years old today, that is, May 19. The film was released all the way back in 2004 as a sequel to one of the best and most entertaining animated comedy films known to mankind. The sequel was undoubtedly a success in terms of both box office collection and reviews. Shrek 2 made $935 million at the worldwide box office which is enough proof that fans of the beloved green ogre absolutely loved the movie.

The best part about the sequel has got to be the many, many pop-culture references in the film. From a mermaid who looks quite like Ariel from The Little Mermaid to an iconic line from Seinfeld, Shrek 2 left no stone unturned to give its audience a gazillion easter eggs to look out for. However, the Mission: Impossible tribute in the film takes the cake for the best reference.

The 36-year-old star’s beguiling unshowiness onscreen has landed him memorable parts in films from Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master), Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies, The Post), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon), Charlie Kaufman (I’m Thinking of Ending Things), Adam McKay (Vice) and Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog), among so many others. Arguably even more viewers know him from his indelible work on the small screen, which began with his breakthrough role on NBC’s Friday Night Lights, continued through AMC’s landmark hit series Breaking Bad and culminated with an Emmy nomination for FX’s Fargo, where he met his wife, actress and co-star Kirsten Dunst.
Plemons touched down for the Cannes Film Festival on Friday for the world premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness, the acclaimed Greek director’s follow-up to his multi-Oscar-winning period fantasy Poor Things.

Back in Cannes a year after presiding over the main Cannes jury, the two-time Palme d’or winner Ruben Öslund unveiled more details about his next mega-project, English-language “The Entertainment System Is Down,” which he said should be ready for Cannes 2026.
The press conference, attended by the hottest talent and producers from the Nordic region and beyond, was hosted by Film i Väst, one of Europe’s largest regional film funds.
Making his usual rock star appearance, flanked by actors Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Brühl, Östlund unveiled more details about “The Entertainment System Is Down”, to be shot entirely on a real 747 airplane, bought by the producers for the movie.
”I was in London doing some casting and Erik [Hemmendorff, producer and partner in the Swedish banner Plattform Produktion] was in Northern London looking for airplanes. A few days later I asked: ‘Did you buy it?’ And he said: ‘Yes!’ That was quite early in the process. I said: ‘Oh,...

Kirsten Dunst said she “sobbed like a happy child at Disneyland” when Ruben Östlund cast her to star in The Entertainment System Is Down, the Swedish director’s follow-up to the Oscar-nominated The Triangle of Sadness. “Who doesn’t want to work with Ruben?” the Civil War actress said, speaking at a press event for the film in Cannes.
Dunst will play a woman caught on a long flight with her husband (German star Daniel Brühl) when the onboard entertainment system fails, forcing the passengers to deal with their own boredom, with darkly comedic results.
“I’m pretty sure that if we took away entertainment from our society, the divorce rate would go up very drastically,” said Östlund, “that’s part of what we’re going to investigate.”

“It’s f–ing hard to make a good airplane movie,” Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund emphasized multiple times Saturday morning in Cannes as he spoke to international press about his plans for The Entertainment System Is Down, the latest feature he has set to direct starring a buzzy cast led by Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Brühl.
His follow-up to the Palme d’Or-winning satire Triangle of Sadness, The Entertainment System Is Down is another social satire, this time set on a long-haul flight where the entertainment systems fail, and an eclectic group of international passengers are forced to face the horror of being bored.
As we reported earlier this week, Östlund and his producer, Erik Hemmendorff, have purchased a real-life Boeing 747 where he told the press today he will mount the production over 70 days on a studio lot.
“We bought the plane and it was quite early in the process of the film.

Yorgos Lanthimos revealed his particular brand of niceness as the Cannes Film Festival presented the world premiere of his twisted Kinds of Kindness on Friday night.
The film, which reunites The Favourite and Poor Things director Lanthimos and star Emma Stone, was greeted with a 4-minute ovation inside the packed Grand Lumiere Theatre. As far as Cannes ovations go, that’s on the short end of the spectrum (Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis clocked in at 10 minutes Thursday night, while at Venice last year, Lanthimos’ Poor Things received minutes of cheers). Still, basking in the applause were Lanthimos and Stone, fellow Poor Things alums Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley, plus Jesse Plemons, Mamoudou Athie, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn and Hunter Schafer. Others in attendance including Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Nomadland filmmaker Chloe Zhao and Ukrainian 20 days in Mariupol documentarian Mstyslav Chernov.
