Image Source: Amazon In the movie that made her a star, Clueless, Alicia Silverstone made the character of Cher Horowitz look effortless — almost as if Silverstone had been typecast in the role. But Silverstone, who was 22 when the high school comedy was released, said it wasn’t as easy as it looked. When the film was originally released, she admitted she was absolutely nothing like the character, but she was able to draw plenty of inspiration from writer/director Amy Heckerling’s acclaimed script. After kicking off March with discussions of the Kristen Stewart vehicle Personal Shopper (listen) and Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train (listen), we’re getting a little silly with a deep dive into Raja Gosnell‘s live-action cartoon sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) for its 20th anniversary!
In the film, canine sleuth Scooby-Doo (Neil Fanning) once again joins his pals Shaggy (Matthew Lillard), Velma (Linda Cardellini), Fred (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and Daphne (Sarah Michelle Gellar) when the Evil Masked Figure breaks into the Coolsonian Criminology Museum and steals a bunch of costumes that belonged to Mystery Inc.’s previously unmasked foes! What’s worse? E.M.F. is using them to create real monsters! It’s up to the gang to stop the monsters’ attack on Coolsville, while dodging the libelous attacks of television journalist Heather Jasper-Howe (Alicia Silverstone), who is out to discredit their investigations.

StudioCanal is teaming up with French production outfit WTFilms on a slate of European genre films.
The agreement will see StudioCanal and WTFilms collaborate in the development, production and distribution of action, thriller, science fiction and horror movie over a period of at least two years.
StudioCanal will act as a co-producer and distributor for WTFilms projects selected during that time.

SNL alum Kyle Mooney previously made his debut as a feature screenwriter with the indie dramedy Brigsby Bear, and now he’s making the leap to the director’s chair with the A24 pic Y2K. Although the film is uneven, the comedic highs are enough to compensate for the somewhat generic nostalgia-bait storytelling.
Y2K tells the story of a group of teenagers who go to a wild party on the eve of the new millennium, only for things to get even wilder when the world threatens to end. It’s an ingenious concept, and while it takes a bit of time for the movie to hit its stride, Mooney and Evan Winter’s script eventually becomes an entertaining, wacky adventure.
The first half of the film is incredibly annoying. It’s the type of cringe comedy that tries to get laughs by saying, “Look at how stupid we were 25 years ago!

A disaster horror comedy that’s equal parts Can’t Hardly Wait and Idle Hands, Kyle Mooney’s directorial debut Y2K is often hilariously sincere in its depiction of social and technological anxieties from the tail end of 1999. Mooney remembers all too well a world where promises of connectivity had not quite caught up with the technology. For those that were not ’90s kids, your mileage may vary and the premise of Y2K might seem confounding: why would a computer system rolling back the clock to 1900 be an issue?
Of course, the anxiety was very real––as documented in Brian Becker and Marley McDonald’s recent HBO documentary Time Bomb Y2K and in stickers from Best Buy telling consumers to shut their computer off before the clock strikes midnight. Mooney’s version bursts with the absurd creativity of a teenager sketching out a wild comic book scenario with...

Ah, Y2K. The millennium bug that induced widespread fear over the possibility of a worldwide infrastructure crash once 2000 arrived becomes infectious fodder for a teen comedy infused with horror and nostalgia. Armed with a pitch-perfect, game-for-anything ensemble and great practical effects behind the carnage and calamity, A24’s latest offers up the most entertaining, funny-bone-tickling apocalyptic scenario since This Is the End.
Comedian and actor Kyle Mooney, who co-wrote the script with writer/producer Evan Winter, makes his directorial debut here. He kicks Y2K off with a potent dose of dial-up nostalgia as it sets the stage for one unpredictable 1999 New Year’s Eve party from hell. Do you remember where you were on New Year’s 2000? Were you home wondering if all the electronics in your home were going to short circuit? Kyle Mooney explores an alternative to what happened on that day in his directorial debut Y2K. His unique comedic voice and offbeat humor have prepared him for this ambitious project that emerges as a striking commentary on the intersection of technology, generational angst and the human spirit. Mooney, alongside co-writer Evan Winter, crafts a narrative that is at once a love letter to the turn of the millennium and a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked technological advancement.

Not too long ago, IMDb introduced a new feature to their website called the Parents Guide. The goal was to give parents a quick rundown of risqué, violent or suggestive scenes from films, and allow them to make quick decisions as to whether or not they should allow their child to watch said movies. Parents who felt aghast that Spielberg would show a scene where a father was unable to reach his child’s outstretched hand, as in the 1991 classic Hook, might choose to skip ahead, while other parents who are appalled by children debating whether or not Wolfman has “nards”, could forgo all of Shane Black and Fred Dekker’s 1987 monster mashup Monster Squad. Plot: The new epic chapter in the battle for Castle Grayskull!. The newly mechanized Skeletor, armed with Motherboard’s might, attacks Eternia’s heart while Prince Adam grapples with a new responsibility and what that means for him as He-Man!
Review: Back in 2021, I gave a glowing review to Kevin Smith’s revival of He-Man. Titled Masters of the Universe: Revelation, the Netflix original was released in two five-episode drops, both of which I loved. A blend of modern animation techniques coupled with a throwback to the Filmation style of the 1980s cartoon, Revelation was blasted online by a vocal minority who disliked Smith’s decision to “kill off” Prince Adam in the first episode and make the series centered on Teela and many of the female characters. By the end of the full series, Smith’s vision came to fruition, even though many fans were not swayed. The second...

Remember that scene in Natural Born Killers in which the Juliette Lewis character enters a Married… with Children-style sitcom, with Rodney Dangerfield playing her dad? Imagine a whole movie based on that concept, add tons of violence and gore — not to mention gags about Christ and Catholicism, a tray-full of crystal meth and, in one late sequence, a dog that gets decapitated by a shotgun blast — and you’ll get an idea of what’s in store while watching the Sundance Midnight selection, Krazy House.
As over-the-top as that already sounds, the film is even more exhausting to sit through — like a hard-r Saturday Night Live sketch that’s been taken way too far, to the point you’re just hoping that it stops. Relentless and off-putting, the English-language debut of Dutch hitmakers Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil is unlikely to land a wide audience in the U.

Modeled on a late-’80s/early-’90s American family sitcom — which soon transitions to a midnight splatterfest — the tongue-in-cheek Dutch production “Krazy House” has all the transgressive stylings of a 15 year-old’s Reddit post on an atheism forum in 2010. Directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil offer ideas of subversion that feel both long-outdated in concept and completely dull in execution, to the point that merely describing the film feels irresponsible, lest its premise accidentally lure curious viewers to the cinema.
Nick Frost plays Bernie Christian, the pointedly-named patriarch of a throwback family sitcom. With his zeal for Jesus sweaters and his living-room church organ, Bernie plays the bumbling househusband to his successful businesswoman wife Eva (Alicia Silverstone), and father to his diligent scientist son Adam (Walt Klink) and moody shut-in daughter Sarah (Gaite Jansen). The fictitious show comes complete with an opening musical theme and studio audience laughter,...

Plot: A nineties TV family finds their home invaded by Russian gangsters. The family’s useless patriarch, Bernie (Nick Frost), a devout Christian with long-suppressed psychotic tendencies, must unleash those urges to save his family.
Review: It happens every year. There’s always at least one movie at Sundance every year that tests my commitment to sitting through pretty much everything I see. This, however, was a tough one. I haven’t had this much of a difficult time with a Sundance movie since The Greasy Strangler, with it being a grating, 85-minute joke that goes on at least 80 minutes too long. It’s a slog.
Directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil are trying to make a provocative midnight movie, with it opening on a nun being violently gunned down before transitioning to a videotaped nineties sitcom. It centers around the Christian family who – natch – are Christian, with...

Mumbai, Jan 23 (Ians) Hollywood actor Alicia Silverstone teamed up with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India to provide delicious vegan desi food to HIV-positive orphans and children with learning disabilities.
“I love children! And sharing yummy vegan food with them is the perfect way to showcase how rich and flavourful meals are when we leave animals in peace,” said Alicia.
These youngsters enjoyed the tasty lunches after taking a tour to meet rescued cows, goats, sheep, camels, and other animals at Animal Rahat’s beautiful sanctuaries in Gundlupet, Ranapur, and Sangli.
The animals were rescued from various hardships, including being used for gruelling labour or in circuses, or were slated to be sacrificed, would have been abandoned by dairies, or faced other horrific fates.
The actress added: “A vegan of many years who has raised her strapping son, Bear, vegan.”

Alicia Silverstone is amazed that audiences are still interested in a 'Clueless' sequel. The 47-year-old actress played the role of Cher Horowitz in the 1995 coming-of-age comedy and loved how her reprisal of the part for a Super Bowl commercial led to fresh calls for a follow-up movie.Alicia told Variety: "I think people are talking about a (sequel) all the time at all times since the movie happened."Has it been 30 years yet? That always is a fun conversation. It's so lovely to see how people still love that movie. It's very nice."Silverstone's latest film is the Dutch comedy 'Krazy House' – which is set in the 1990s and follows a sitcom family whose lives are transformed when criminals arrive at their door – and she had an immediate interest in the unconventional plot from directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil. She recalled: "I...

The definition of satire is flexible, but not quite flexible enough to accommodate “Krazy House.” This bloody, anarchic hand grenade of a film is just straight-up blasphemous, opening with a brushed-aluminum shot of a cop plugging a nun full of bullets and escalating from there. Like an Adult Swim infomercial directed by black-metal teenagers, the latest feature from Dutch comedy duo Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil takes sneering pleasure in giving the middle finger to God in hyper-violent, absurdist fashion.
The Adult Swim bit is baked into the premise of the movie, which takes place entirely within the confines of a sound stage reminiscent of the set from “Married…With Children.” The sitcom-within-the-film is called, naturally, “Krazy House.” It revolves around the Christian family, which is composed of standard-issue archetypes: bucktoothed bumbler Bernie (Nick Frost); his wife Eva (Alicia Silverstone), who’s naturally way out of his league...

The logline for writers/directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil’s Krazy House reads like the perfect gonzo midnighter for the horror crowd. The initial setup is meant to skewer the zaniness of ’90s sitcoms, complete with a live studio audience and aspect ratio to match. But that premise quickly goes off the rails, not in a good way, stretching a short film concept into a grueling slog of empty shock value.
Complete with an opening theme song and credits, Krazy House introduces the Christian family. Bernie (Nick Frost) serves as the oafish but well-meaning dad, the polar opposite of his neurotic workaholic wife, Eva (Alicia Silverstone). Then there’s his gum-swallowing daughter Sarah (Gaite Jansen) and science-obsessed son Adam (Walt Klink), both unamused by Bernie’s clumsiness and steadfast devotion to Jesus Christ. It’s only house pup Angel that seems not to mind Bernie’s sitcom hijinks.

It’s always a welcome surprise to encounter a fresh face who’s also a natural screen presence, which is very much the case with the captivating Maisy Stella in My Old Ass. Not to undersell the newcomer’s individuality, but I kept getting a crunchy granola version of Clueless-era Alicia Silverstone, which is no faint praise. The fact that Stella is often bouncing off Aubrey Plaza in peerless sardonic form just sweetens the deal. Megan Park’s enjoyable second feature is a warm blend of comedy, romance and whimsical collapsed-time fantasy, albeit grounded in the protagonist’s real world.
Not since Toy Story 3 wielded its power to reduce grown-ass adults to puddles of tears has a movie been so in touch with the tender feelings associated with leaving home and saying a definitive goodbye to childhood, wistfully contemplating what we take with us and what we leave behind.

Alicia Silverstone was a bright light in the otherwise maligned 1997 superhero movie “Batman & Robin,” playing Batgirl opposite George Clooney’s Batman. Although Clooney has distanced himself from the role in previous years, he showed up in 2023’s “The Flash” in a multiverse cameo. While Silverstone was at the Variety Studio presented by Audible to discuss her new Sundance film “Krazy House,” she was asked about whether or not she’d put the cape back on.
“If you arrange that I will do it!” she answered with approval.
Much like a trip to the multiverse, “Krazy House” is a film that plays fast and loose with perception and reality. Nick Frost and Silverstone — along with Gaite Jansen and Walt Klink, who play their kids — are the Christians, a devout family living in a ’90s sitcom. It’s crazy for me to realize this, but this year marks my fifteenth time covering the Sundance Film Festival for JoBlo. Granted, two were virtual due to the pandemic, but I’ve made my way to lovely Park City, Utah, thirteen times over the years to catch all the most interesting indie flicks coming soon to theatres (or- nowadays – streaming). In my time at Sundance, I was lucky to see classics like Call Me By Your Name, Whiplash (at a genuinely unforgettable press screening), The Raid 2, and so many more.
While – to me anyway – the festival’s output has been a little lower key in recent years, every year I know I’ll see at least a ten or so titles that will resonate with our audience. Last year’s midnight entry, Talk to Me, made over $90 million worldwide, so even in a quiet year, there’s a chance a blockbuster will emerge.

2024 Sundance marks something of a milestone in the documentary space for XYZ Films, best known for championing global genre fare like The Raid, Mandy, and The Invitation.
On Thursday opening night the Los Angeles-based company premieres two documentaries which it produced or executive produced. After years of relatively random engagement in the non-scripted format, producing the likes of Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce’s Framing John DeLorean (2019) and Marq Evans’s 2021 Tribeca premiere Claydream (2022), the documentary division led by Tamir Ardon is in full flow, with multiple projects in the pipeline.
