Life Without
Life Without is the slow paced telling of four years of Jake Evan’s life, starting at the moment he hears his fiancée, over the phone, get into a car accident. The story progresses through Jake’s initial struggles to find his Fiancée (Amber), and then through his pains of waiting, as he endures the bureaucratic red-tap of the hospital. After dealing with over worked and uninterested nurses, Jake finally meets with Amber’s doctor, who informs him that Amber is in a coma and that she will require long term care, and that, due to an insurance conflict, to keep Amber at the hospital, he must pay for all of her medical expenses out of pocket. After agreeing to pay for the expenses, Jake meets the hospital’s head of medicine, Dr. Jonathan Wright, who makes it clear to Jake that the hospital is in the business of helping people. Jake immediately acquires a job and begins paying for Amber’s expenses. After three months of working, Jake, unable to keep up with the payments, sells all of his worldly belongings and begins his downward spiral. Jake’s life becomes little more than sleeping at the hospital, going to work and giving Amber extra care. After two years of this routine, Jake, still unable to make full payments, gets a second job and continues his downward spiral. After another two years of living an ever-meager life, everything in Jake’s life falls apart as he is pushed to the edge and finally pushes back.
