Familiar Trope But Fresh
21 May 2024
Without spoiling too much, this is definitely one of these films were you can predict what's going to happen early on. But what makes this so fresh is the unique storytelling.

The First Omen is one of the most creepiest films ever made. Not because of jump scares. Not because of grotestque imagery. But simply because its realistic portrayals about supernatural events. As ridiculous as the characters' motivations are, the film is so well done that you believe them And it touches on some important modern issues.

The cinematography is outstanding and actually improves the creepiness of the story. The performances are great too.

One of the criticism I have is about the ending of the film. All the other elements of the film don't scream "franchise film". But the ending is a bit corny. If you know, you know.

But overall, a great addition to the horror genre and the director is talented.

This movie isn't for sports fans, but artists who don't know anything about sports

Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I disagree with the comments about Zendaya's acting. I think she does a decent job in this film and portrays the role of an abuser well.

Second of all, this movie is about abuse that destroys a friendship. Both men are pawns to the main character and you can clearly see this throughout the film. She is the villain, plain and simple. And the movie does a good job of not making the other characters overly sympathetic.

Mike Faist is fantastic. I've been impressed with him since West Side Story. He plays the role of the naive fool pretty well.

Josh O'Connor is also great. He is believable as a manipulative partner, but also a person who is way over his head.

The score is great, but I understand how the style of this film may not be for everyone.

If You Have Childhood Trauma, It Might Be Triggering...
18 May 2024
I won't lie. Some of the execution is messy. There are some questionable cast choices made and sometimes they stick out really bad. However, the final product still leaves an impact.

To be clear, there aren't any explicit depictions of abuse. Yet the film's undertones are depressing and bleak. If you grew up in a dysfunctional household as kid in the 90s or 2000s, this film will hit you hard (I agree with one of the previous reviewers).

At first, you're going to be like... WTF. And then when the film is over, you're going to be thinking about your childhood and stuff.

And if you feel like an underachiever in life, be prepared to cry some more...

I feel like the people who don't get it weren't the weirdos growing up. Everything isn't for everybody but don't give a movie a one star review because you didn't understand it.

Not profound enough. Very pretentious
14 November 2021
I thought this movie was going to be more intelligent than the last films. However, I was disappointed. The storyline is very simple and to be honest, it's been done 1000x before. There is no shock value and the movie plays it a little bit too safe. The actors give it all they have, but even the small funny parts aren't enough to change my mind about this film. Wait until this comes on Disney Plus.

It was fine. Ignore people's overly political takes
7 July 2021
If you're rating this low because you think it's woke, then you're entirely too childish to be leaving a review. This was fine. Nothing was inherently wrong with this. Just because your seventh grade social studies teacher lied to you, doesn't mean the show is wrong. The rating literally says Y7 so I don't know why grown adults are saying "it's too simple". It's clearly meant for children.

The plot was not very good
11 June 2021
I was underwhelmed by this movie. Although the musical numbers are great, I am annoyed by the lazy writing. The characters are super flat and there is no clear antagonist. This is one of those examples of a musical that did not translate well to the screen. The movie is kind of like a long music video. There is no tension. Just "feel good". And if that's what you're looking for, then this movie is for you.

Very weird and surreal
20 February 2021
The lead character is completely unlikeable. Please don't call this character "feminist". She is a completely evil and sociopathic. Her characterization killed the entire message of the film. The film started off as brilliant and became sooooooo weird.

The episodes are too short
16 January 2021
The first episodes are okay, but how long do they expect us to wait before knowing the premise? I'll be fine with just the sitcom aspect, but that's not Marvel. Action needs to come. Fast.

In a world filled with Baby Shark videos, how can I be so picky?

Warning: Spoilers
This film is definitely for older children. More like 7+ because younger children won't get it unless they're little Einstein.

As far as family entertainment goes, this film is fine. Some of these reviews are mind boggling. It's a Disney film. Why are some people expecting it to be Interstellar 2.0? I'm a young woman and have spent most of life watching Disney and Pixar films. Trust me when I say this: this film has a deeper meaning than most Disney films. It's pretty good.

Now I will say that this film isn't pushing any time of Abrahamic religious themes. Despite the name of the movie, it doesn't explore the afterlife religious people know, which makes it unique.

If you have children that are 7+, see it. If your children are younger, probably not. And if you don't have children, you should definitely see it!

Ignore the harsh reviews
26 December 2020
Sure, it isn't as dynamic as the first movie. It's a sequel. The actress who played Cheetah was fine. The writing could've been better. People need to stop confusing bad writing with bad acting:

The film felt rushed, but there are some emotional moments in this movie. Overall, the saving grace of this film was THEE Lord Maxwell. That actor is so talented! Without giving out too much, the film has a very good message and speaks about the materialistic 80s.

This Movie is Extremely
5 December 2020
Things you should know:

1. This movie will critique the hell out of the Confederacy, "history" lovers. If that offends you, this is not the movie for you. The Antebellum era was not glamorous. Black people were treated horribly. Deal with that fact or deny history.

2. This movie is extremely unsettling, but not in the way you think. Without giving too much away, this movie relies on situational horror. In other words, it's not your Friday the 13th styled film.

3. This movie will test your patience. And I believe the movie could've been condensed by 30 minutes or so.

4. Some of the acting is a little, well, weird. The southern accents are just bad. I have a theory as to why, but I'll just leave that be.

5. Again, the movie takes too long to put things together. It's a slow burn for no good reason at all.

6. The twist is good. It's good because it doesn't come from nowhere. There are many hints to it in the beginning.

7. The cinematography is really, really good.

6/10. Could've been better. Honest opinion.

Good Acting Saved This Problematic Tale
26 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Maybe I'm just being too harsh, but it was really hard for me to have sympathy for JD's mother. Contrary to our initial assumptions, JD's mother wasn't a poor woman who had nothing going for herself. She was smart and educated (was a nurse). She had a decent house from what I could see. Therefore, it's really hard for me to believe that her actions were anything but selfish. Drug addiction is hard to overcome, but JD's mom barely admits she has a problem in the film. This makes her character very unlikeable. In other words, this character has little remorse for her actions. She's a complete narcissist in the film. This woman puts her kids through the most horrible conditions and then blames her upbringing for it.

Secondly, I don't understand the point of this film. Family comes first. Okay? Even when one person is abusive and puts their wants before their own children? Frankly, the film kind of sends this message that it's heroic to "save" your messed up parents. We are made to believe that's a child's responsibility. I call BS. We shouldn't glamorize JD's situation. That woman was awful and he had no obligation to help her at all. Family values don't apply in cases of abuse. I'm just going to leave it at that.

Lastly, this film is completely one dimensional. It almost appears like a big budget Christian film with great acting. I was expecting a little more depth after reading about JD's true story. He is a Yale Law graduate yet the film lacks sophistication. There's no critical thinking required to understand the film's message. It's shallow and sensationalized. Even when it tries to address poverty, everything falls flat. The biggest problem? The writing! The dialogue is very simple and "I've heard that before". The bottom line? This film is okay because of the acting. Everything else is completely unoriginal and relies too much on tropes. This young man's story is way too unique for this bland approach.

I Like It
15 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I know nothing about the world of finance, but I find this show interesting. Harper, the main character, has some integrity issues, but that's what makes the show interesting. I think it would've been super boring if the lead was a black woman who went to Harvard or something. As a recent, black college grad (one year ago), I can relate to the feelings of inadequacy. And don't get me wrong, I think Lena Dunham is vile. However, this show isn't bad. The lead actress doesn't express a lot of emotions because of the character's circumstances. Again, this isn't something the viewers will understand if they're not a minority trying to prove themselves. Was the first episode over the top towards the end? Yes. But I'm interested in seeing how Harper's desire to win at all costs will catch up with her. As someone who is very liberal, I don't really see anything "preachy" about this show thus far. Sure there's an instance of racism and elitism, but it's not refuted at all. In fact, Harper is just suppose to deal with it and the character who is being racist isn't called out. This show is rooted in realism. The writers aren't concerned with telling you "this is inappropriate". It shows you and expects you to understand. In other words, this is not a CW show lol. If the time period is set to now, this is one of the first shows I've seen about Generation Z college grads.

TW: One of the characters is sexually assaulted (groped) by a woman in the first episode. The scene is very brief, but upsetting.

Needed a little more depth

The movie was missing something. It just seemed too simple. I think a darker tone would've elevated this film. But regardless, it's unique and kids will like it.

Profound
1 November 2020
If you're a fan of in-your-face horror, this film is deeply psychological and not for you. Although politics lay the foundation for the story, the story itself isn't really about immigration. I think sometimes people see minorities in horror films and automatically think it's about racism or prejudice. To be blunt, there's no political message in film. It's well crafted and allows you to draw your own opinions. See it for yourself.

The Writers Need to Do More Research
28 September 2020
The writers need to do a little bit more research about the era. Without spoiling too much, the writers add diversity, but it doesn't work well at times because the writers fail to go in depth about the racism and homophobia of the era. I personally don't mind adding black or other minorities to shows. I'm a black woman myself. But why include black people in unrealistic roles in a show set in the 1940s? It's not representation. It's a complete lie and undermines the plight of black people and other minorities during that era. I saw this in Ryan Murphy's Hollywood as well. Again, sugar coating racism and homophobia. To be LGBTQ and/or a person of color was DANGEROUS back then. The stakes aren't realistically high enough in this show. If you watch the show, some parts are pretty tone deaf to the racist policies that occurred in the 40s.

Despite this, the show is okay. It's not great. I've never seen AHS so I don't have that frame of reference. The acting is very good. If you have time to waste, watch it. It's not unbearable although. Although the historical accuracy is trash.

Cute, but has flaws
27 September 2020
First of all, who casted Henry as Sherlock? No. No. No. Sam Claflin is good as Mycroft though.

My main complaint is the plot. It seemed too...unsophisticated for the Sherlock Holmes universe. Now the feminism of the film was beautiful. That was honestly the best part. But all together, it didn't film very "Holmes". I guess this is for teenage girls, mostly. It was cute.

Only for Open Minded People
27 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If you have a strong opinion against abortions, this isn't the film for you. I don't see the point of complaining about an obviously pro-choice film when you don't have to watch it. Regarding the content of the film, I thought Bailey's character had great comic timing. I do think that some parts of them film are very over the top, but after all, it is a comedy. Contrary to popular belief, the movie doesn't glorify abortion. It sends a clear message of choice. I think the subject matter was handled with care. Not every woman or girl is traumatized from the experience.

In the case of Veronica, the pregnancy was being used as a way to trap her in an undesirable relationship. I think it's important for people understand the nuances of why people choose to get an abortion. If you're not ready to see a different viewpoint, the film is not for you.

Disjointed
16 September 2020
This is a well done show. The cinematography is great. Acting is decent. HOWEVER, the show feels more like an anthology series. I mean, from one episode to the next, you can see these jumps in the storytelling. There are illogical time gaps and unnecessary side character devoted episodes. It's like the show forgot who the lead was. It just feels disjointed. I will say this show isn't for everyone.
