Tashan (2008)
Outrageously Stupid
this has got to be the most horrifyingly stupid movie ever made in the history of film making.........no story, wafer thin plot, loud, garish, SENSELESS, and not to leave out - UNREALISTIC, are some of the main characteristics of this movie.... !!!!!!! please don't spend any money on this movie, it seriously does not deserve it. the only and I mean ONLY good part of this movie is Kareena Kapoor in a 2 piece....... she looks HOT !!! thats it........anil kapoor is Irritating, to say the least. akshay kumar is OK and does manage to raise a coupla laughs.....saif ali khan has been wasted, actually I don't know how he agreed to do this role as a sidekick.
Namastey London (2007)
Engaging Bollywood Masala
First and foremost, Namstey London is a treat to the eyes. The modern day London has been captured very well. Namastey London comes across as a pleasant surprise in more ways than one. Be it the characterization, the well executed script or the breathtaking visuals of London.... it succeeds in capturing your attention. All the characters are well written and the screenplay is very tight, keeps you interested throughout the movie. This is undoubtedly Vipul Amrutlal Shah's best work till date. His last venture 'Waqt' was termed as very melodramatic. The movie is sentimental make no mistake about that, but it works. It works brilliantly.
Manmohan Singh (Rishi Kapoor) is settled in London for the past 20 years or so. Jazz or Jasmeet (katrina Kaif) is Manmohan Singh's spoilt daughter. Manmohan Singh brings Jazz to India and gets her married to Arjun Singh (Akshay Kumar), a rough and tough Punjabi who can barely speak English. But Jazz too is equally determined to marry her British boyfriend Charlie Brown. Arjun is helplessly and hopelessly in love with his beautiful but unyielding wife.
The first half is pacy with many moments which tickle your funny bone. Rishi Kapoor is marvelous in his role as a frustrated father of a spoilt girl. Katrina Kaif looks stunning and does her part quite well. The second part is longer and belongs completely to Akshay Kumar who has matured immensely as an actor. He makes you laugh and he makes you cry. Akshay Kumar truly exceeds expectations. The scene where he explains what India is about to the foreigner is unarguably the scene of the movie.
All in all Namastey London is a must watch. Don't miss it.
Sholay (1975)
one of the best screenplays in Indian cinema
Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar), once a senior police officer, hires two small-time crooks, Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jaidev (Amitabh Bachchan) to bring the dreaded dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) to him alive. How Jai and Veeru plan to capture Gabbar Singh and bring him to Thakur forms the rest of the movie. In the village, Veeru falls in love with the garrulous but winsome Basanti (Hema Malini), while the more serious Jaidev feels drawn to Radha.
Sholay had all the elements of a Western - rugged countryside (the film was shot in the rocky landscape of Ramnagaram a small village about 30 miles from Bangalore), bandits on horseback, fierce gun fights etc. Sholay's phenomenal success can be attributed to perhaps the way it was able to blend the various items or 'masalas' required in a Hindi film in exactly the right doses. Practically every scene, dialogue and even a small character was a highlight. Even Dhanno, the horse of the tangewali, Hema Malini is remembered till today! Every small character be it the Jailer (Asrani), Mausi (Leela Mishra) or Sambha (Mac Mohan) - they are etched in viewer's minds.
In India, Sholay is not just a movie... it is a legend. There are people in India who remember each and every character of the movie vividly even now - 31 years after it was first released !!! this is the beauty of the film. Every character is so well sketched. It is the highest grossing film of all time in India. It has earned about Rs. 2,134,500,000, equivalent to US $ 50 million, after adjusting for inflation. It ran for 286 weeks straight in one Mumbai theatre, the Minerva. Using sentences like "Arre O Samba", "Ab Tera Kya Hoga Kaaliya?" mothers frightened their children with the name of Gabbar Singh. Sholay was loud, garish, but it had something which touched everyone's heart. Shot in 70mm with stereophonic sound, Sholay was the ultimate big screen experience. It was India's first film in 70 mm with stereophonic sound. Mention must be made of Dwarka Diwecha's stunning camera-work and R.D. Burman's evocative background score, which help elevate the film even further.
Midhunam (1993)
humorous and sensitive at the same time
midhunam is undoubtedly the most enjoyable serious film of our times.... the movie sends across a strong message about staleness in relationships but at the same time the viewer is not bored even for a minute. This movie is one of priyadarshan's best after kilukkam... The movie revolves around a common man called sethu (portrayed brilliantly by mohanlal) who is trying to set up a biscuit factory of his own. The problems he faces while doing so forms the rest of the story. It is perhaps after watching this movie that you realize what kind of potential mohanlal as an actor has. The emotional scenes between mohanlal and urvasi during the final stages of the movie is the highlight of the movie... the best part of this movie is that almost everyone will be able to connect with the characters portrayed and the situations they are in. The scenes in which mohanlal tells urvasi what a marriage is supposed to mean seems so real that you forget you are watching a movie. Other highlights of the movie includes superb comedy by innocent (as a rowdy),jagathy sreekumar (as a police officer) and sreenivasan as mohanlal's companion. The screenplay is tight and keeps you gripped throughout. Urvasi also excels in the role of a childish bride. This is a must see for all married people and also for everyone who wishes to be married one day.
One Fine Day (1996)
a feel good film
one fine day is one of the best romantic comedies made ever. the film stars George clooney as a divorced journalist who never likes to take any responsibilities....Michelle pfeiffer plays Melanie Parker, a divorced mother. The film is all about one day in the lives of these two individuals; how they meet, and how they come to know each other. It is beautifully edited and the screenplay is very tight. the USP of the film is definitely Michelle Pfeiffer. She delivers a top performance as a single mother who tries very hard to keep things normal. George clooney is also quite funny as the cocky journalist who is not used to taking up any responsibilities quite unlike Melanie parker(Michelle pfeiffer). The film takes off with the children missing their field trip in school (both Michelle's son and clooney's daughter study together in the same school). Both pfeiffer and clooney have a busy day and they have no one but each other to look after the kids. so they decide to take turns and look after the kids.. there are some scenes which can be rated as classics ..especially the police station scene right after pfeiffer loses clooney's child. the film makes you laugh throughout and on the whole makes you feel good. it's a sweet film with good performances from all the cast members. go watch it...you wont regret it.
Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam (1986)
superb comedy
this movie is a classic. it highlights the problems of the middle class. excellent screenplay by sreenivasan and brilliant performances by mohanlal, sreenivasan and karthika make the journey even more exciting. the comedy is as usaual hysterical especially sreenivasan's role...the village scenes of mohanlal are also shot very well....all in all a must see for every malayali. The strength of the movie is its tight screenplay and humorous dialouges .... mohanlal is as usual brilliant in every situation. songs by jerry amaldev are also catchy especially the "pavizhamalli" song.... karthika does well in her role. sreenivasan enacts the role of a policeman. the movie also has sukumari, thilakan and others.
