Childhood (2001)
Come on, jump already!!!
All of the other reviewers here on IMDb are so in favour of this film. Film? I'm sorry, did I compare this pile of Horsedung to an actual FÍLM?! Must be because it's Sunday. Makes me say stupid things. Very stupid things indeed.
So the film stars this whiny kid that can't speak English because the only times we hear him talk are through voice-over. Good! The less said by him, the better. Having the boy not talk makes him the more sympathetic, but no; we hear this tearful squeaker constantly! Makes it all the more simple for me to enjoy all the horrors he's going through and malicious pleasure has never been more pleasurable.
Why? Because this story is told in the most annoying way! Bad acting, terrible cinematography, excruciatingly torturous music and sound recording/editing and all of this makes me care so little about the characters. Seriously, making this film with aforementioned components, it's like constructing the Eiffel Tower using nothing more than steel bars and paper glue! Watching this film was really atrocious. It runs, what? 85 minutes? Could've been DAYS for all I knew!
Poorly constructed, badly acted, uninteresting characterizations, appalling sound, abominable slow pace, this film has it all. All of the things I just mentioned, that is; to me, it has NOTHING appealing whatsoever!
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
I've seen all of this before...
There were only little things to like about this film, like the humor. And even the humor was to be found in the sections 'All Been Done Before' and 'Unoriginal?? What're You Talking About??!' (Cough)*Sarcasm*(Cough) The film was annoying, also because there were a lot of people who died, but only extra's, no one really important.
Maybe kids like it and love it, but this is not a pirate-movie. At least Jack Sparrow is not a pirate; Johnny Depp is a great actor, but the story makes him completely unbelievable, if he'd be a real pirate, he'd be much more of a bad-ass.
There should be no argue about tastes, but I hate to see this movie to be so high rated!
Carnivàle (2003)
"Ye Offspring Of Serpents, Who Warned Thee To Flee The Wrath To Come?"
Finally, we are allowed to vote this series! Never have I seen anything like it, the moment I saw the previews I knéw this would be something great, something to my taste. Then I read a very positive article in our TV-guide, saw the first episode and BAM!!!!!!! I was sold!!! I never liked TV-series, though I concluded from the previews that it had to be a series. I didn't care this time. I let the series enchant me and the spell remains unbroken.
First of all, this series has a story! I believe that's very rare in a series, a story that actually makes you thínk! At least a series in this genre, looking at "Angel," "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," "Charmed" and all that shite. I count "Carnivàle" among the supernatural series, that is. It is in no other way comparable to earlier mentioned other series.
Second, there is the atmosphere. And the cliffhanger in each episode; for every answered question, you get three new ones in return! If the series is going to be finished (with the last four seasons), I would not be surprised if the ending was a cliffhanger also! But the atmosphere, the subtle magic, the interesting characters, the music... WAAAAHHHH!!!!! Once you've got the feeling of the series, you're in the edge of your seat every moment, because you don't want to miss a thing, and though you know what you can expect, you're thrilled every time something unexpected happens. You almost start to hope you won't get to know what things mean, and if a series does this to you, you can't expect it to get better!!!
10 Out of 10 is still wáy too low for this!
28 Days Later... (2002)
Repent: The End Is Extremely F@#$king nigh!!!!!
Waahh!! I wanted to see this film to find out what Cillian Murphy looked like, when I first read that he'd play a villain in "Batman Begins." That was two years go. The I saw the film, without any expectations, really. I díd see the trailer, but all I could see in that, was that it wasn't a conventional movie, and it just might be something rather good.
And I saweth it was good...
The movie really makes you think: what the Hell would Í do in this position?? I saw a similar movie after I saw "28 Days Later..." and most of the characters in that movie made peace with the situation far too quickly. But this film is almost perfect! It's my favorite movie! I'm also connected to a Dutch film-forum, where "28 Days Later..." leads my top-10; if I was allowed to include TV-series in that, it would have to make place for "Carnivale," but "28 Days Later..." is a true masterpiece, nonetheless.
I'm still awed by the atmosphere. Danny Boyle is a genius, and so is Alex Garland! I'm looking forward to their next collaboration, "Sunsine!"
