Inspector Morse: The Settling of the Sun (1988)
Amateurish
Dreadful script, dead dialogue, ludicrous camera direction, complete lack of overal pace or of dialogue delivery, wooden acting at best, hopelessly over-elaborate plot ...
La voz humana (2020)
Pretentious and very weak
The dog was good and the minor parts were performed well. Swinton gave the impression that she just wanted to get the filming over. I don't blame her! Really not worth watching.
Mrs Lowry & Son (2019)
Tedious, repetitive, and too long ...
... presumably in order to meet the cinema minimum of 90 minutes. Would have worked better at 60 minutes. Based on a radio play and directed by a theatre director - says it all! Poor sense of pace and little understanding of filmic narrative. But brilliant acting all round.
Roma (2018)
Where and when?
Thanks IMDB for telling me where the film is set and when. More than the film-maker did. But then, he knew didn't he, and why should he bother to tell all those of us who couldn't tell.
A beautifully made film which left me puzzled as to what it was really for. A common fault of films written/produced/directed/shot/edited by one person, however technically and artistically skilled that person.
A more informative presentation might have helped to make audiences more appreciative.
The Party (2017)
Writers should never direct their own scripts
Simply dreadful. The presentation completely failed to deliver a rather good story. The actors quite evidently did not believe in what they were doing. Was it supposed to be Brechtian??? Sorry, but for me it failed to work at any level.
The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014)
Well made, but...
... a basically cynical story of post-imperial neo- colonialism masquerading as multi-culturalism.
