The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023)
Short, awkward and pastel colored unconventional piece of cinema
Wes anderson films are always a dazzling, quirky and funny pastel colored experiences that make use of their powerful cast to deliver life lessons in the most unconventional way possible.
Leading the cast is the charismatic Benedict Cumberbatch who throughout the story, transitions from a naively selfish, bored bachelor to a generous man, who decides to learn to see without his eyes through the diary of the pioneer of the technique whose story is told through flash flashbacks seasoned with awkward humor and witty dialogue (as the main storyline); short, sweet and filled with life many lessons.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
A distant sequel that respects and surpasses the legacy of the original
Given that the original film is such an iconic piece of american cinema released in the height of the 80s and the launch platform of superstar Tom Cruise, making a sequel seemed a daunting task and at times an unnecesary one, but this film proves otherwise as the final product is a masterfully crafted movie that respects the original film and is able to surparsse it in every aspect: production, acting, dialogue, etc.
In order to fully appreciate this movie, a theather is neccesary as it is the only tool that conveys adrenaline Rush of an aerial dogfight.
A passion project in Tony scott's memory.
Blue Lock (2022)
The antithesis of the power of friendship and teamwork; Egoism is the way
Despite defying the core concepts of friendship, teamwork and selflessness shown in the majority of sports animanga, Blue lock focus on the importance of cultivating ego as the main engine in the development of the potential of an athlete is impressive.
Boasting a wide array of unique and unforgettable characters, impressive visuals despite some clunky cgi models, a thrilling atmosphere and a well crafted storyline, where the stakes get higher with every match, this series is going to keep you at the edge of your seat, craving for more.
Undeniably the best soccer animanga of these last years.
Trollhunters (2016)
An amazing 3 season introduction to a universe of adventures, trolls, aliens and wizards straight from the mind of Guillermo del Toro
Despite being labebled as a kid's show, this is a nuanced and complex story about responsibility, frienship, bravery and even death as Guillermo del Toro characters are not afraid to mention this particular word every episode.
The vivid and dynamic movement of the characters, their varied and colorful designs, especially the trolls and other fantastic creatures, and the big expansive locations, such as trollmarket just ooze with life.
The voice acting is expressive and well performed, the performance of the late Anton Yelchin is brilliant and filled with life as he transitions from situation to situation, emotion to emotion naturally and effortelesly.
The character's interactions are amazing and wonderful to watch as they are the core of the series and the engine that drives the plot; the main characters are charismatic and loveable, special mentions to Jim, Aargh, Vendel and not the enrique.
The villains are a cornerstone, as each season rotates the main antagonist to culminate in an final season, that introduced elements that would become the foundations of the next series in the franchise, such as the Tarron siblings who would become 3below main characters and Douxie, Merlin and Morgana who are the foundation of the final entry of the last netflix series Wizards.
Overall an excellent and wholesome story, brilliant as to expected from anything created by Guillermo del Toro; the best part, it can be enjoyed by the whole family and it caters to every taste. A solid story built over a precisely crafted and writtten lore.
Daredevil (2015)
A trip to a dark corner of the Marvel Universe done right!!
At first, like many marvel fans I was biased towards this project given the failure of the Daredevil movie, but we were so wrong as this series turned out to be not one of the best (if not best) tv series based on any marvel property, but overall one the best superhero tv shows of all time.
The dark tone, the photogenic streets of new york city, the gripping storyline, well developed characters and great acting (especially Charlie Cox) made of this series one of the many gems of netflix, which is not easy feat, given the large amount of excellent shows it has to offer.
Season 1 was one hell of a ride through the crime ridden Hell's kitchen, which gaves us perspective of the corner of the world inhabited by the daredevil cast, it was cold, dark and brutal but at the same time oozing with life, it concluded in a satisfying way. It's worth mentioning its great coreography and fight scenes and their massive quality which remained constant in later seasons (especially the oners).
Season 2 was a massive letdown, at times unwatchable, the only thing that gave life to this season was the punisher and his presence, but overall and aside from Frank Castle's storyline this second season felt like a filler created only to lay building grounds for the defenders miniseries (another letdown on its own right).
Season 3 was an excellent return to form, going back to the formula used in season 1, it focused again on Daredevil's one man war against the organized crime of new york city and the deep corruption of the juridic system, needless to say by introducing new characters it created amazing new character dynamics that wove together the storyline of this season. The ending felt like a closure, but at the same like an opportunity to continue the story, which sadly will never happen.
The stunning production values, brilliant acting, complex narrative, stellar fight choreography and examination of morality and consequences of our actions made of this series an unforgettable and visceral experience.
Make no mistake, despite being a ''superherp'' show, this one is not for the faint of heart, as it is a visit to a dark corner of the marvel universe that at times was too realistic and felt like our world.
Watchmen: This Extraordinary Being (2019)
A unique and unforgettable episode
Definitely a visual and narrative masterpiece that delves into the origins of the first superhero of the watchmen universe.
The black and white imagery gave this episode style and certainly encapsulated the essence of the early 20th century world, the acting was on top as the cast especially Will Reeves actor managed to convey the wrath and frustration his character carried with him.
One particular highlight was the fight scene between hooded justice and the cyclops cultists as it was particularly brutal and violent, while "I dont want to set the world on fire" sounds in the background creating an utter perfect juxtaposition of sound and video.
Overall it was an excellent episode, a unique style was needed to tell this period piece in the best way possible, a classic episode that is surely going to be praised in the years to come as one of the, if not the best episode of the tv show that like its comic book counterpart destroyed the concept of superheroes and anchored to reality.
Young Justice (2010)
Complex plotlines and engaging character interactions=DC's narrative at its best
While some may view this series as an inadequate succesor to previous DC's works like Batman TAS or Justice league, the truth is this series stand on it's own toes backed up by a high quality animation, over reaching plotlines, an astounding and extensive cast of characters with excellent development and truly interesting interactions.
The writing of the series is masterful, able to carry on the intrincate story is trying to tell, but most importantly fleshes out the characters in an way that gives them more dimension and depth than many live action characters of popular tv shows today; having said the previous the core of the series is the interaction between its different and varied characters, be it hero-hero,villain-villain or hero-villain the way they speak one to another really allows the viewer to understand the situations that are taking place and many times the implications of these events.
Despite this series being named after a comic book team of young superheroes, this series feels more like an adaptation of Dc comics that honors its extensive story and legacy while at the same time making changes that are logical for the series's narrative but at the same time, respects the source material and long time fans and their knowledge of DC comics lore.
Overall this series has it all: action, multidimensional and sympathetic characters, excellent narrative, beautiful and top notch animation and is thought provoking regarding both the heroes and villains actions, to the point where the line between them comes across as blurry or non existent; overall this series is perfect for long time dc comics fan or new fans who can use this series as a gateway to know other excellent dc properties like tv series, direct to video films or comic books (like I did).
Along with cartoon series like avatar the last airbender, the legend of korra, Trollhunters, this series is among my favorite western animation shows of all times, a true masterpiece that is surely going to gain a cult following in the coming years.
