New Jersey Drive (1995)
You know what I'm saying?
Unwatchable. How many times does someone have to say "you know what I'm saying?". Lazy writing. Spike Lee should be ashamed to be attached to this cringeworthy movie. Is this supposed to be a satire of young poor black boys?
Beatriz at Dinner (2017)
Not billed correctly
Two stars for acting. Zero stars for everything else. This is billed as a comedy. It's not even a dark comedy. There is absolutely no comedy involved. None. One of the most depressing movies I've ever seen. Truly.
In the Valley of Elah (2007)
Fact Based, Unsurprising
Well worth watching. So wait, this movie shows how (some?) people who sign up for the military are ultimately unfeeling, screwed up, machismo laden, murderous husks of human beings? This is not new information. This movie does a great job of showing how sick these people actually are and how the military closes ranks when things go awry. Great acting all around.
Molly's Game (2017)
Fast Paced Fun
I don't understand the reviewers who say the movie/dialogue/narration is too fast paced. I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be fast paced. Maybe to give one a sense of the urgency and desperation with which these rich idiots stake their fortunes on card games. I won't try to dissect this movie for you. It grabs your full attention almost immediately and doesn't let go. It's well worth watching. Jessica Chastain is pretty much flawless as an actor and is probably the only (at least American) female actor who has any chance of dethroning Meryl Streep anytime in the next 30+ years.
American Psycho (2000)
Hey everyone this movie is set in the '80's!!!
Four stars is generous. Bale's character is completely plastic. It goes beyond portraying an 80's yuppie into a realm where anyone would recognize that he's completely unstable. There is no subtlety at all. The writers continually force down your throat that this movie takes place in the 1980's in a very inorganic way. It's like "Yep, we get it already, you've proven your knowledge of 80's pop music." It's not only Bale's character that's unbelievable, it's every character. Nothing rings true. It's as if the writers and actors had heard stories about the 80's but never lived through those years and are putting on some grade school production. You can skip this one.
