Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022)
Went in not expecting much and was blown away
The story and the soundtrack are amazing. Really full of emotion. You will come to love the characters in the short time you know them. As much as I would love a season 2, I think the ending was perfect. Genuinely one of the best pieces of media I've seen in a long time. As close to perfect as you can get in my opinion.
The song used in romantic scenes throughout is a banger and carries more weight than you'd think it would. Seriously please watch this show you will not regret it I promise.
If only the game had the same emotion and consistent quality. Had to write a review because I loved it so much.
Vacation (2015)
How can you manage to make such a bad comedy with a cast like this?
Youve got the likes of Ed Helms, Chris Hemsworth, Christina Applegate, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, Chevy Chase, Keegan-Micheal Key, Norman Reedus, Micheal Pena and Elizabeth Gillies and yet you do nothing of worth with any of them resulting in a movie with a maximum of 2 or 3 laughs throughout its runtime. Ill take any of the sunny cast doing anything at all so I was glad to see them even if they were ultimately wasted.
How they managed to write something so painfully unfunny and to get a cast with this talent is beyond me, maybe they all owed Ed Helms a favour?
Mostly a bad comedy with only a few genuinely humourous moments with entirely unlikeable characters you will struggle to empathise or relate to and a story that has been done a million times before (almost always better than it is here) what a waste.
Free Guy (2021)
Really Fun Film
Really fun watch. Took the idea and ran with it, all popculture references were well done and werent shoved in the viewers faces like in other similar films.
The cameos from YouTube and Twitch stars were a tad cringe worthy for me but otherwise suited the subject matter well.
The ending could have had a slight tweak to make the romance plot wrap up more soundly but was otherwise servicable.
The sequel subplot was a little weak for me as a games servers don't shut down when the sequel is released but I understand why they did this as it helped the plot have a sense of urgency.
Ryan Reynolds once again showed his aptitude for comedy acting playing the lead role in the film and delivered the majority of laughs for me. Taika Waititi played a great antagonist, his work was great as usual.
The Orville: Lasting Impressions (2019)
Amazing Episode, MacFarlane is a Genius
As a long time Trek fan, the Orville was enjoyable in its first season but with this second season, the focus has largely shifted from the more satirical aspects of the show to dealing with some of the larger questions of sci-fi and deeper looks at the way we as humans interact with each other.
This episode was genuinely my favourite episodes of the Orville so far, it's themes are extremely relevant to any time period, dealing with love and loss, life and death and the need to be remembered.
Set MacFarlane is largely seen as a farcical comedy writer but with the Orville he has created not only a more loyal take on Star Trek than any of the modern shows but he has exceeded Trek in many ways, the small splash of humour only adds to making the characters more likable and realistic.
This episode had me tearing up, smiling and made me want to write this review, which is not something that happens often. Truly stunning performances from the whole cast and stellar writing from MacFarlane.
Twisted Pair (2018)
The Breenius is back
Neil Breen returns with his new sci-fi espionage thriller. To understand this film requires a high intellect because of its complex themes and anti big business narrative. Breen's acting as the two titular leads is astonishing as always. I was nearly crying at least 3 times in this film, which is 1 time more than in his masterpiece fateful fondings. If you like action oriented science fiction films this is the movie for you.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Season 1 = Awful, Season 2 = Better, Season 3 = Good
Skip season 1 if you care about existing canon, or pretend it is in a spinoff universe like the JJ films. Season 2 is okay, less canon breaking, still a bit too much star wars not enough star trek. Season 3 is beginning to recapture some of that Trek feeling for me, a crew going into the unknown and discovering the galaxy all over again.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020)
Babies First Apocalypse
The characters are the luckiest bunch I've ever seen. Nobody dies. They just keep getting lucky. Meanwhile in the main series, grizzled zombie fighting veterans are being chowed down. The characters should be dead, the amount of times they have put themselves in serious, deadly situations is absolutely ridiculous.
Artemis Fowl (2020)
Literally the worst thing I've seen in over 20 years of life
Movie makes no sense and the plot moves like a bullet train on a circular track, it moves fast but doesn't actually go anywhere.
Newzoids (2015)
Saw this on tv and Ive always remembered how bad it was
Honestly trash comedy only funny to the 20 percent of the country who are slab heads
Captain Marvel (2019)
Average Marvel Film
Captain Marvel isn't a bad film. While I vehemently dislike Brie Larson, her acting talent is more than serviceable for this film. My real issues with it come from the lackluster story. Spoilers ahead.
The entire beggining of the movie shows Captain Marvel (CM) as a member of the Kree starforce thinking of herself as a Kree (utterly pointless as anyone familiar with the MCU will already know she is human. She has magic powers that she is told she has been given by the Supreme Intelligence, powers which can be taken away. (this isn't true, she got her powers from an explosion. or maybe the supreme intelligence can take them away but it wasn't made very clear.
Anyway the whole story is kinda pointless, you have the Skrulls who spend the first half of the movie trying to kill Captain Marvel and to infiltrate earth. Then they pull the old "the guys you thought were bad were good" which just makes the movie more confusing. I don't know if Skrulls are meant to have already have been established as a race in the MCU before this but I can't remember them at all and spent the first half of the movie asking " who are these space goblin elf men?". There isn't really a villain in this movie, after having a villain like Thanos, you can't just use some weird man with strange eyes and expect that to be a compelling villain.
Only went to see this to prepare for endgame, wasn't disappointed as I wasn't expecting Infinity War level quality. But this movie is on the level of Thor 2 in terms of how dull it was, at least Thor 2 had a central villain.
In conclusion, it's not good, but its a long shot from the worst film I've ever seen. One of the weaker Marvel films but not every movie is created equally.
Doctor Who: The Woman Who Fell to Earth (2018)
Disappointed Again
As I was not a fan of Capaldi's last season as the Doctor due to the declining quality of Steven Moffat's writing I decided to give the new season, with new showrunner Chris Chibnall and new Doctor Jodie Whittaker a chance. This first episode did not inspire much hope in me, I will attempt to run through my issues with this episode in particular in a concise method. -Jodie Whittaker is not right for the doctor: While the introduction of a female doctor could have been interesting, a mixture of the writing and Whittaker's unfocused performance as the Doctor defeats any attempt at establishing Whittaker as THE DOCTOR. At the beggining of the episode I let it slide as this is what will commonly happen after a regeneration, usually having a moment towards the end of the new Doctors introductory episode where they would give a speech and that would reassure the audience that this new Doctor is still the same person at their core. However, either through poor writing or a poor performance, Whittaker fumbles this moment and continues to appear confused as to who she is throughout series 11. Perhaps this will change in series 12 but I am doubtful.
- Grace's death is pointless and makes you feel nothing: a character introduced in the first episode dies by getting electric zapped, while this would benefit the series later down the line, in the context of the episode the death has no impact on the audience as you only really get to know grace for a few minutes before she is killed.
Now this isn't to say it's the worst thing I've ever seen. The cinematography is drastically improved from previous seasons. It looks more like an American TV show than ever before, which can be seen as a good improvement. The new title sequnce is interesting as well with the very bassy tones combined with the trippy ink visuals prepare you for a romp through time and space (most of which is based in Sheffield sadly).
The Good Place (2016)
Plotholes and Overly American Comedy
I think you're unlikely to get much enjoyment from this is you like shows with a good narrative or aren't American or not very clever. The "comedy" simply isn't very funny. Couldn't get past the 3rd episode, the people in the "good" place are all horrible, self absorbed, holier than thou hypocrits. When the main character asks about the "bad" place she is told she isn't allowed to know anything about it but gets to hear the screams of suffering from the people there. Now bare in mind that being "bad" in this show just means not being rich enough to support charities your whole life. So these "good" people are just sitting around smiling and giggling as their former friends and family burn for all eternity because they didn't fly to Africa to feed the orphans and instead had to work to support their families.
Really, really stupid show
