The Book of Henry (2017)
Started with promise but quickly evaporated into drivel
Ugh. This movie started out pretty decent. But it quickly dissolved into unrealistic man-child, non-functional alcoholic mom, pedophile next-door neighbor, abused step-daughter, etc. The story line is all over the place. While the pedophile next-door neighbor is the villain of the story, and rightfully so, the busty BFF of non-functional alcoholic mom gets a pass when she kisses the 11yo man-child on the lips. The ending is unsatisfying. Spoiler: the pedophile ends up killing himself when he realizes his brother can no longer keep his abuse under wraps. Survivors want abusers to pay for their crimes, not end it on their own terms via a bullet to the head. Yes. I get that it gave immediate freedom for the victim, but the authorities and perpetrator weren't held accountable. The corruption is just swept under the rug for another victim. Very dumb movie that I fast-forwarded to get to the end. Making adults out of kids so pedophiles can abuse them. There is nothing grown up about an 11yo genius. Just because you're book smart, etc. Doesn't make you a free agent for an adult to romanticize. Period. I would never watch this again and don't recommend it to others. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. Slow moving. Plot constantly changes. Just awful.
Hidden in Plain Sight (2019)
Worse than a Lifetime movie...and that's bad
I'm not sure how I watched this whole thing. Terrible acting. Terrible story. She basically knew her boyfriend just long enough to get pregnant. Then she fakes her own death so he doesn't know where she is. If her ex was so dangerous, she would've done lots of things she didn't. First off, her mom would've known how dangerous he was because she would have told her. Second, she would have told her son about how dangerous his father was. She wouldn't have lied and said he was in the military. If I were in the situation, I would've said "your father and I dated for a very short time. He wasn't the man I thought he was. And when I got pregnant with you, I knew you wouldn't be safe. So I had to get you away from him." That alerts the son to how dangerous his father is without telling him details. Then he wouldn't have gone off with the father because he would've known. Third, she would've informed everyone at the school of his dangerous father. They would've been given a photo. There would be security measures in place. Next, she would've known when he was released from prison because she would've followed it. And finally, she would've learned self defense and protection. This is just ridiculous.
God Bless the Broken Road (2018)
Typical Christian movie
There was so much wrong with this movie. Christian movies are like shows in the '80s. They have to deliver a message. It really just ends up being preachy and overdone.
Things that were wrong. There's obvious tension between the widow and her MIL that is never really explored. But in the end, the widow is the one who apologizes. Maybe the widow had a right to not be warm & fuzzy with her MIL. She seems all too eager to throw her DIL under the bus, criticize her, and take her daughter from her. Then there's the church. If the widow was an active member of a church when she lost her hubby, they should have rallied around her during her time of need. Church people are to be the hands and feet of Jesus. You don't wait for people to ask for help. Use your eyes. This was a small town. Let's face it. They must have known or had some idea of her financial situation. Then there's the fact that the military takes care of its own with death benefits. So there should have been no reason for her to lose the house in the first place. And the whole NASCAR thing was just lame. Sprinkle the Christian music throughout, and you just have a really lame movie that is preachy. I would not watch this movie again nor would I recommend it unless the person I was recommending it to really like these kinds of movies.
One Day (2011)
Just barely made it to the end
I just watched this movie because it was recommended. I liked the previews. It had Anne Hathaway. So what's not to like?
This is probably the weakest performance I've seen by Anne Hathaway. Her character fell flat. The accent wasn't believable nor was it stable. And ultimately, I felt absolutely no passion from her for the lead actor's character. It was dull.
I had no idea this was based on a novel. I will never read the book even if books are generally better than movies. I don't see how you could improve this story without altering every detail about it. Dexter is a wastrel who is an alcoholic who is selfish. While Emma (Hathaway) may have made him a better person in the end, what did he do for her? Oh yes. He made her happy. Really??? Well, compared to the other 2 men in her life who had as much personality as an old worn-out shoe, I guess he made her happy. But honestly, a halfway decent person with personality could wipe the floor with Dexter. It's insulting to every woman on the planet for Emma to pine away for a wastrel for 20 years who only sees her value when the alternative is to live life alone.
I do not recommend watching this travesty of a story. This is not a great love story.
Doctor Foster (2015)
Not realistic
There are so many flaws with this show. Everyone needs serious counseling. First off, if I were Gemma, I would have left the town. Let Simon have it. Take Tom and leave. As soon as the divorce went through, I would have sold the house, practice, etc and moved far away. U would have cut all ties. Let Simon have all of their so-called friends. She obviously didn't want him out of her life or she wouldn't have made it so easy for him to find her. Even after in Season 2, he exhibits complete obsessive qualities that leave the viewer wondering if he's going to murder her, she still returns to the house where they have "happy" memories. Really? If everything she found out in Season 1 led her to believe her life was all a lie, then move on. Why hang onto a house that is a lie? Why stay in a town full of people who weren't really friends to you when they knew your husband was cheating on you for 2 years!!! And yeah... Tom is completed messed up. This show was a train wreck from beginning to end and not based in reality.
