Third Adam 2: The Great Seduction (2020)
Not recommended for devotees of Amma
I was curious about this movie as Amma (Mata Amritanandamayi) was listed as a "cast member." Devotees of Amma should keep far away as it does not cast her or seemingly any other female spiritual figure in a positive light. As I was watching it I was struck by the misogynistic overtones and the director's seeming lack of mistrust of women in a spiritual setting. The scary thing is with YouTube and the internet such people can easily amass a following and can influence credulous people. No one should watch this video, especially devotees of Amma. Anyone wanting to learn about Amma should go to her website and avoid this video.
Bandidas (2006)
Great Movie but not DTS-ES or Dolby Digital EX
Even though Bandidas was listed as having specially-encoded soundtracks the version of the movie I rented only had a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. I realize that renting a movie only on the basis of the audio format is pretty shallow, but nonetheless I was somewhat disappointed. The sound effects on the Dolby Digital version were quite good, and I don't know how much the movie would have benefited from the extra channel in DTS-ES, or if the lack of compression would have enhanced the movie. Probably not much. However, if a studio goes through all the trouble of creating enhanced extras for a DVD, I don't know why they wouldn't include them on all the the releases for the DVD.
My Name Is Earl (2005)
More like a movie than a TV show...
I happened to turn this show on a few nights ago and was surprised by the quality. No laugh track...high production values...and FUNNY! The characters are a little sleazy, but I have to give it props for the laughs. I hope this is the wave of the future for television sitcoms. Leave it to NBC to come up with something this revolutionary. Even though the show is kind of sleazy at times the premise is noble--the main character trying to make up for mistakes he has made in the past. I just hope they don't get a big head over their success and let the freshness and humor slip--like Seinfeld and other NBC shows did in my opinion. So...watch it, but don't tell your friends;)
The Sweet Life (1989)
So Sweet...
I got turned on by a friend to The Comedy Channel and immediately fell in love with Rachel Sweet and the Sweet Life. She WAS sweet, and her tongue-in-cheek humor also was. I wish HBO would release a compilation, but I don't think many people actually watched the Comedy Channel--as the other reviewer noted. All of Comedy Central's shows were funny and creative...it just wasn't the same after they merged with HA! Remember the Higgins Boys and Gruber? Onion World with Rich Hall? Night After Night with Allan Havey (which did survive the merger...at least for a while). Maybe there will be a home for the reruns on the internet some day...
