Across the Universe (2007)
Well worth the wait!
I really enjoyed this movie. It had a few disjointed moments, but was overall very awesome. The puppet sequences looked like they were directly from Bread and Puppets (not surprising, seeing that Julie Taymor apprenticed with the troupe in the 60's!), and caused my daughter to exclaim "hey, there's the cow!" (we had gone to Bread and Puppets in VT for the soul purpose of seeing the puppets after seeing the preview in August).
Although I have at least one review downing the movie, I really liked it and was thrilled to see some of my favorite Beatles tunes incorporated into such a creative story portraying such a diverse period of our history. It was interesting trying to explain everything to my daughter, including why Max would have to hospitalized for drug addiction after returning from the war, and the vivid example of the civil rights race riots that occur early on in the film.
We honestly need more films like this, giving us both the good and the bad points of periods of our history.
The Legend of the Golden Gun (1979)
remember this from childhood
While I admit that I have not seen this movie since My early teens, it is one of those movies that has stuck with me over the years. I can seriously point to this as an influential movie, not because of the cheesy 70's soundtrack, but because of the spiritual aspect that at least one other reviewer noted. There was something there that caught my attention, and that is saying something.
I don't remember much about the movie, other than the master teaching the young boy about how to sense the target he was shooting at and use his mind not his eyes (sort of proto-Jedi). I also remember that the golden gun had seven bullets, not six, and that that was a key factor, but not why it was so important.
Never the less, it left an impression that I hold to to this day. I hope to find it someday. I would like to see it again, even if it was as hokey as others claim it to be.
