God Knows Where I Am (2016)
Emotional, but lacking information
It is a very moving, emotional and, frankly, depressing portrayal of how the mentally ill often fall through the cracks and fail to receive the care and assistance that they need. However, I didn't feel that the film really gave enough detail or information about the woman herself. We learned about her childhood and did get some sense of what it was like for her based on her own journal entries, but I still felt like most of the film contained very little about the victim and was mostly just dramatic cinematography which stretched out the length but didn't add any real substance. The whole thing could really have been condensed into a 30 minute length program. So, while I was captivated by the tragedy of this woman's story, it felt too drawn out and left me with so many questions about her illness and the events that led her to that house, that overall I was pretty disappointed.
Seven in Heaven (2018)
Movie has no actual plot
This isn't a horror movie. To be fair, I don't generally like the horror genre, but I had a feeling that this would be more suspenseful than scary, so I decided to give it a try. It wasn't even suspenseful. It was boring. I stopped watching quite a few times, but eventually decided to see it through because I thought the end would at least give a clue as to what they director was trying to do with the film. Nope. Literally no point in watching to the end.
I think it could have been a great movie. It seems like someone had a great idea, pitched it, and then didn't know how to follow through once they got the green light on the project. Characters aren't fully developed. Plot is all over the place and inconsistent. No moral to learn. Unrealistic plot elements like a mob chasing a car and keeping up with the car. If it were truly a horror film, adding enough scare moments to please the fans of the horror genre would have made up for the anemic plot. It didn't even manage to do that much.
I guess if your kid (younger than teens -- teens will find this lame) wants to watch a "scary" movie and you are okay with them being exposed to underage drinking and implied sexual activity, you could let them watch this and spare yourself being on nightmare duty for the next week or so. Otherwise, I'd pass on this one.
