6 Underground (2019)
Wow. I dare you to follow this ...
I watch a lot of movies and am pretty good at following a timeline, even with jump cuts and flashbacks, but this was really hard.
At one point they even said, 'now you are all caught up', but later did more flashbacks...
Love Ryan Reynolds and he was his normal funny self but the editing/jumping around, made it hard to follow. Without all the back and forth it would have been more 'fun'. It is Michael Bay, after all. It shows like a Michael Bay film that was somehow caught up with the WestWorld crew.
9-1-1: Lone Star: Pilot (2020)
Disappointed
I haven't seen the other 9-1-1 shows so maybe they are all like this?
The PC box checking was extreme to the point of being ridiculous. They missed only a couple of the identity politics boxes.
It didn't help me when they drove from NYC to Austin, somehow, by going down a small 2 lane road on the New Mexico/Texas border. It was like they were trying use/re-enforce another stereotype of Texas. Either poor writing and research or just lazily disingenuous.
I was rolling my eyes too much to keep watching it. Really disappointed.
Singularity (2017)
Terminator Salvation meets Katniss, Cinderella and Pinocchio
The story was derivative of Terminator Salvation and they told you that right at the start. Much of the dialogue between the young actor and actress was corny and felt forced. The story would go along smoothly and then sort of jump to conclusions that didn't add up. For example, the 'magic kiss' that woke up the robot somehow also caused the entire facility to crumble. It didn't just fry the computers, the concrete was literally crumbling within seconds of the 'magic kiss'. If the writers had a reason for it, it was edited out.
Jeanine Wacker was ok in her performance as the protagonist but her Swiss accent comes through loud and clear in her first few scenes which really threw me off. This was a dystopian future, 97 years in the future in the US. Why would our protagonist have a Swiss accent?
Julian Schaffner did a good job, even with some bad lines. He was probably the most consistent performer.
Cusack did a decent job with some bad dialogue. He had a couple of really good scenes that gave me hope for the rest of the film but ultimately the derivative nature made it a bit too predictable and there were too many scenes spent discussing the 'heart of being human' and what it meant to be good. Can the robot become a 'real boy'? Those scenes were the ones with the cheesiest dialogue.
I have seen worse movies but this was painful at times to continue to watch. I commend the young director on the cinematography, lighting and set selection.
