"Arty". Pointless and incomprehensible.
8 August 2021
If you're looking for a good sci-fi flick, look elsewhere. This is a time-loop movie that makes absolutely no sense, goes nowhere, and DOES NOT 'star' Ian McKellen. Mr. McKellen spent maybe one hour filming one two-sentence cameo that is replayed more than once. The same sentences, that is. That's the extent of his involvement. This movie sucks and is a complete waste of your time.

Real Detective (2016–2018)

Absolutely top-notch!
3 August 2020
I'm a BIG true-crime addict, and have been watching true crime TV for over 30 years. This show ranks with the best ever series that I've seen. The show has got to be one of the most expensive ever. The production values are fantastic, and many of the episodes star actors who, if not famous, are excellent character actors that I've seen many times and I'm sure others would recognize from many films and TV shows: Michael Madsen, Tahmoh Penikett, Louis Ferreira, etc. I usually don't like the dramatizations on most true crime TV, but the recreations on this show are excellent. But ultimately, what really sets the series apart are the presenters - always the detectives that worked the original case. They've all been deeply affected by these cases, and it shows. This makes Real Detective perhaps the most moving of any true crime documentaries shows on television. Kudos to the show runners and everyone involved. I hope there are many more seasons!

UNWATCHABLE, PRETENTIOUS B.S.
17 March 2020
Apparently this filmmaker, Mark Cousins, is a film historian and 'expert'. If you think that you're going to see the ultimate examination of Hollywood, or even European film, forget it. This guy is gonna drag you down long corridors of boredom talking about obscure, artsy-fartsy films and directors that only a film school student/graduate or film critic would care about. For example, he makes a big deal out of Africa's contribution to film. Huh? If there are any great films or filmmakers from Africa, I never heard of them. Furthermore, as he's decided to narrate this series himself, he's not only made it unwatchable, but ABSOLUTELY unlistenable. This guy - born in England according to his Wikipedia entry - has what I can only describe as an impenetrable Irish(?) accent, rendering his narration incomprehensible, at least to my American ears. It's not just the accent. He has, without question, the worst presenter's voice I've ever heard, and I watch documentaries every single day. Avoid this - it's incredibly boring and will offer you no insights into FILM (God forbid he should use the term 'movies'). And his voice will drive you nuts.

Crown Vic (2019)

TERRIFIC! Tough-as-nails look at patrol cops in the Joseph Wambaugh tradition.
21 November 2019
'Crown Vic' starts out with a helluva bang and remains riveting all the way to the finish. It's the simple story of a single night in one squad car as a rookie cop (Luke Kleintank) goes on his very first patrol to begin learning the ropes from the 25-year patrol veteran (Thomas Jane). What follows is a no-holds-barred tale of life and death on LA's mean streets. Great performances by both leads complement a streamlined script with very few wasted scenes. It's funny, tense, heartbreaking and brutal and I couldn't recommend it more highly.

HYSTERICAL & GUT-BUSTING! One of the funniest animated flicks of all time!!
3 November 2019
This movie is a criminally underrated gem. I watch almost every animated movie released, and 'Storks' ranks with the best of the best. There are no deep messages or aphorisms here - it's simply chock full of gut-busting humor from beginning to end. Although it's absolutely a kid-friendly flick, much of the humor is aimed at adults. And unlike almost all animated movies it doesn't use a lot of cheap-shot pop culture references or fart jokes to get those laughs. If you're a fan of Andy Samberg, you're gonna love it, but knowing his schtick is certainly not required. The animation and writing are terrific and the rapid-fire jokes come at a frenetic mile a minute pace. It had me cracking up throughout and I'm a tough audience. I'll have to watch it again to catch all the jokes I missed. Check out 'Storks', you'll be glad you did.

One of the 10 greatest films of all time
22 August 2019
A brutal, disturbing & very funny black comedy, A Clockwork Orange is my favorite Stanley Kubrick movie. It is by far Malcolm McDowell's greatest role, and he dominates this movie with one of the greatest performances in film history. He somehow manages to be vile, hateful and totally charming simultaneously. It is the greatest movie about society's relationship with violent crime I've ever seen. As shocking and entertaining today as it was in 1972, it both predicted and inspired the punk movement. A Clockwork Orange has stood the test of time better than any movie I know. If you've never seen it, watch it immediately. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

The Twilight Zone: Point of Origin (2019)
Season 1, Episode 8
2/10
Another disappointment
17 May 2019
Once again the new TZ lets us down. I have no problem with the issues presented on these new episodes, but why do we have to be preached to each week? The writing is once again a major problem. The original Twilight Zone was renown for its heartfelt scripts, great dialogue and clever twist endings. Not every episode had a surprise ending, but enough of them did to make that a hallmark of the show. There hasn't been a decent twist in any of the episodes of this reboot so far, and this is number 8 of the series. 'Point Of Origin', like most of the past weeks on this show telegraphs its ending long before it arrives, and the writing is so flat that in its efforts to be thought-provoking it leaves me with a big 'that's it?'. This show doesn't hold a candle to the original TZ, and pales in comparison to Black Mirror, the show that is the definitive torchbearer of the Twilight Zone legacy.

The Twilight Zone: Not All Men (2019)
Season 1, Episode 7

Leaden with a heavy-handed "moral". AGAIN!
10 May 2019
What a disappointment this new incarnation of TZ is. Like a lot of you, I couldn't wait to see what it would be with Jordan Peele's name attached. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to have anything to do with the writing of these episodes. Too bad. While Rod Serling's original show often had clumsy twist endings, at least there usually WERE payoffs. Many of the new Twilight Zone episodes have none, or ones so underwhelming as to be non-existent. "Not All Men" is no exception, and in fact is the worst of the lot so far. Where Serling could be preachy at times, the new TZ beats you over the head with a sledgehammer. The writing in this episode stinks: men are brutal, insensitive a-holes who choose to be that way. That's it, as far as I could tell. Tessa Farmigia & Rhea Seehorn give acceptable performances, but they've really got nothing to work with here. This is the seventh episode; c'mon guys, get it together. All of us old (I mean that literally) Twilight Zone fans long for a return to the good old days of stories with bold writing and great performances. Of the former we've had very little.
