Above Suspicion (2009–2012)

Awful
5 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I really don't know where to start with this. Initially I opted to watch this because I love Ciaran Hinds and thought he could do no wrong (apparently, sadly I was mistaken). I started to binge watch while recovering from the flu. I got through series 1 (bad, but only two episodes) and persevered with series 2 (dreadful, but I was sick) but series 3 was the worst piece of TV I think I've ever seen. The acting is terrible and the writing gets worse as the series progresses. Kelly Reilly's character is portrayed as some sort of man magnet with a whiney teenage voice and annoyingly dishevelled hair. A Detective Inspector? Don't make me laugh. Anyhow, when in the midst of the series 3 investigation she was hit on by both the Pathologist AND the Drugs Team DCI within minutes I knew it was time to call it a day. Needless to say, not recommended.

Europe according to the USA
27 April 2022
The main issue I have with this show is how the FBI agents conduct themselves in such an arrogant manner. Get over yourselves show writers - this would not be tolerated by any European law enforcement agency. Secondly, Europe does not exist entirely of run down, grotty apartments and office space which seems to be the only accommodations featutured in this show. Writers, please visit Europe sometime - you might be surprised.

It's ok but . . .
27 November 2020
It's an easy watch. The viewer doesn't need to concentrate too much and it's a nice change from some of the 'gritty' dramas out there. I just have two questions - is there absolutely no dress code in the US or Canada for high school students? Maddie dresses like a cheap hooker and Gwen like a slightly more high class one (and they both look at least 10 years older than any high school student I've ever seen). And, are Search and Rescue personnel permitted to arrive on duty looking like they are badly hungover and have slept in their clothes?

Why the shouting?
19 March 2019
I love this show but why does Jeremy Sisto's character need to shout like a demented person in every scene? It seems so unnecessary.

Grey and Depressing
14 March 2019
I have rarely, if ever, stopped watching a TV programme half way through without giving it a chance to draw me in but this was so grey and depressing that I couldn't get past thirty minutes. Maybe the premise of exploring the protagonist's personal (car crash) life instead of the stories and investigation around the victims is interesting for some viewers, but not me. This is more like a soap opera than a 'crime and investigation' series despite what the title suggests. Disappointing.

This is how the US sees Ireland???
2 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I usually love this show (except for that brat Alison) but the depiction of Ireland in this episode was a throwback to the dark ages! Are we expected to believe that a slew of diplomats, including the US Secretary of State, would be stranded at Shannon airport for an indeterminate length of time and have to negotiate the right to a sandwich?? No food or accommodation provided? Guinness referred to several times as the only beverage available? Then the singing in the airport bar - don't get me started! Honestly, if this is how the show writers envisage Ireland then I'd advise they visit sometime soon and do some research.

Unlikeable Characters
6 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like this as I have long been a fan of Angela Griffin, but the show is very disappointing. There is not one likeable character in it and the three women leads are just awful. I like Wendy Crewson and I expect the writers wanted to portray her character as a 'tough female in authority' but she just comes across as being bolshy, rude and annoying. The young detective is ridiculously immature - and to find out in episode 7 that she has been in the police force for 10 years? And as for Angela Griffin's accent? Not a winner in my opinion - check out the original - it was far superior.

Absolutely tragic anti-climax!
23 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
As the finale of a seven series run, this episode was seriously lacking. The over acting of ALL characters was (almost) funny to watch and the 'poisoning' of Rosen scene was like something from a school play! Everything wrapped up WAY too neatly and if anyone can believe that Mellie Grant is Presidential material, well . . . . I can say, I stuck it out through good and bad for all seven seasons but I really expected something special with the last episode - unfortunately, it didn't happen. Very disappointing.

Should have bowed out with season 4
18 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I watched every episode of seasons 1 to 4 of OITNB during a bit of a marathon box set run last year. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was really looking forward to season 5 - but what a disappointment! I watched up to episode 4 last night and that's it for me I'm afraid! The season begins with a prison riot and by episode 4 it's still going on with no hint of authorities taking any action! There is no story line - just a mish mash of barely connected 'happenings' that are so ridiculous that they are not even funny (the 'hand in the pocket gun', the half naked guards in captivity, the talent show, 'Red' acting like a 5 year old on a sugar high and absolutely no screen time for Piper and Alex). The only light on the horizon was Uzo Aduba as Crazy Eyes - she was outstanding as always. Sorry folks, but I think this has run it's course.

Slow West (2015)
10/10
I just loved it!
25 June 2015
Many of the reviews here seem to be written by contributors who take their cinema VERY seriously (not that there's anything wrong with that, as Jerry Seinfeld would say!). However, my take on Slow West is that I just loved it. It was a beautiful story with a great ending and it was a pleasure to see it all condensed into 84 minutes and not follow the new 'value for money' 3 hour epic scenario that a lot of films seem to be going for these days. All of the actors were superb and I loved the occasional quirky characters that showed up, especially the Congolese trio singing away in the middle of nowhere! So, in my humble opinion, Slow West is a good traditional enjoyable Western movie and that's it!
