Transsiberian (2008)
WAY too much torture!!! and screaming!!!
I started watching this with great anticipation - but when I see the 1st murder - that was it. I shut down and refused to continue watching the violence and ongoing uncertain terror!
But I was curious about what would happen - so I continued until I got to the torture scene.
I was so upset, I threw the DVD away. and refuse to watch any future R movie!
WHY do they have to have such graphic violence and torture! It was terrible! This is NOT entertainment! I'm glad it failed at the box office!
It was not boring and predictable and some say above. I guess I'm just feint of heart for not being able to stomach the scenes of murder and torture! and the screaming!!!
By Love Possessed (1961)
Superb score...
One thing the campy reviewer above forgot to mention was the lush score of Elmer Bernstein.
Very very memorable themes, beautifully scored... tying everything together... and haunting long after the movie is over...
It's a shame this film cannot be seen today on the networks... Too tame by today's standards... but representative of solid storytelling, and fine drama... never possible to be replaced by today's synthesized orchestras, computer drawn scenery, and wannabe character actors...
It's also a testament to an era when big name movie stars existed - something you don't have today. Those stars are from an era gone by, and never to be repeated - thanks to our interfering government breaking up the Hollywood system!!!
Today's here-today-gone-tomorrow stars just don't have it!
Knight Without Armour (1937)
Find it on Turner Classic Movies
Just check the schedule for TCM.
Next showing is 6pm Nov 16th 2010.
As the above review says - it's "a great lovers-on-the-run film with a world-falling-apart backdrop" - as well as a wonderful period piece, and extravagant costume film! It is a very complicated film reminiscent of Dr Zhivago! And even tho little known, it was just a pleasant surprise to see the future star of The Four Feathers join the ensemble halfway thro...
TCM is wonderful because they restore old films, and this one is presented scratch free with no sound defects...
Hurry Sundown (1967)
Wonderfully produced film saying it like it was!!!
Why everyone is panning this is beyond me!!! With an all-star cast to keep you in awe, his tight-knit story keeps the pace going concerning life as it was.
And as a further comment, the blue-bloods above probably thought Gershwin's Porgy & Bess was awful TOO!!! Get a life says I!!! It's wonderful to see so many stars of such caliber in one film - compared to the trash & wanabees being put out today! The script is witty and hilarious at moments - even tho concerning a dead-serious topic...
It is also full of emotion. I highly recommend it! if you can find it...
I rate this as an all time classic...
The Last Emperor (1987)
eh - I've seen better...
Somehow I wasn't enthralled like with Indochine.
Or Memoirs Of A Geisha! Now THAT was a STORY!!! I wanted to see this because of it's rep.
Call me naive but - - back on the shelf - - to stay...
Somehow I can't see why it was given so much attention. As I said - - maybe I'm just naive...
Sometimes it makes me wonder why someone would spend all that money to make a film that has limited appeal...
and you wonder about the politics involved in getting these limited appeal movies to the awards ceremonies...
To Kill a King (2003)
Stunning visually
Stunning - - absolutely stunning visually. If for no other reason to see the film BUT -- the sound is awful. You can't understand everyone. It's hollow! You would think with all the producers on this film - that they would be conscious of everything. They were so sensitive to the perfect costuming and sets. But the sound? Yikes! It spoiled it for me...
Was it because it was in Dolby 5.1 -- and we didn't watch it in Dolby 5.1 ???
There also was not enough explanation as to what was going on. Otherwise it would be PERFECT for school children to see. It would have taken so little effort to explain things..
I can only assume this contributed to the films unpopularity. I never heard of it. I took a chance on it seeing it on the library shelf... and was immediately impressed with the costuming and sets. But try to understand it? I put it back on the shelf... and forgot it...
Lost Horizon (1973)
The music was TERRIBLE!!!
Cut out ALL THE LOUSY SINGING and you'd have a fantastic film.
You had to have been DEAF to have allowed this film to be released!
WHO in their RIGHT MIND could have approved those awful sing song disjointed hip hop songs! And if I'm not correct on this -- then why hasn't this been released ANYwhere! No DVD! Can't see it on TV. Doesn't get any play time ANYwhere! Can't even buy the TAPE! Bootleg only -- and blurry! Try a search on eBay! Very limited...
Sad sad sad. Best plane crash I've ever seen! Wonderful special effects! Sensational escape adventure. Superb brilliant color! Great scope!!!
Then the singing begins! YUK!!!
