Tarot (2024)
Personally, I loved this unique take on horror!
I'm confused by all these negative reviews! I guess I don't know what people wanted from this? I went in completely blind - hadn't seen a trailer, read a synopsis, nothing - and I was not disappointed!
Tarot was a unique take on a classic story: death is coming for you, can you escape? Only this time Tarot cards "come to life"! What an absolutely unique idea. The cursed cards were so cool, I'd love to know who drew them.
Maybe I liked this so much because I myself am a Tarot card reader? I'm not sure, but it makes me sad that so many people are saying it's the "worst horror movie ever" pshhhhh, no way! It was a fun ride with some scares and of course the stupid characters doing stupid things (duh? If your attic access is randomly open and there's a ladder there DO NOT CLIMB IT?!). Overall, a really great movie. I hope people go in with an open mind instead of reading these reviews and going in with a tainted opinion.
Road House (2024)
LOVED THIS!!
I am an avid Jake Gyllenhaal media consumer, so I had to watch this movie even though I've never seen the original, I'm not a big action movie fan, I don't like fighting, and I cannot stand Conor McGregor. All that being said, I LOVED this movie!
The characters were engaging, the story was interesting, and the filming was wonderful. I also loved that the story didn't end up being a "love story" like I figured it would as soon as they introduced Ellie.
My favorite scene was the one where Brandt shows Dalton the video in the bar. The way all the sound was gone other than the pool balls really made the scene. You can tell Dalton really *heard* what Brandt was saying. Why do you keep fighting when you don't have to?
Now on to Conor, who as I mentioned I cannot stand. He was great. I despised his character, just like I was supposed to. He did exactly what he should have in this role. And it was a sweet, sweet feeling when Dalton took care of it. That was another scene that was filmed really well, it felt like watching Mortal Kombat, in a really good way.
I don't know, it seems there are a lot of people who didn't like this movie, and I don't really get why. It was good, it was engaging, I am already on my second watch as we speak. The only downside I can come up with is that this totally should have gotten a theatrical release, it would have been great on a huge screen with good sound.
I'm off to watch the original now, so I can compare.
Jury Duty (2023)
It's SO good!
Man this show *puts hand on heart*. I just loved it. It's "The Office meets the Truman show" as I believe James Marsden put it. Ronald signs up to participate in a documentary about the justice system through a jury's eyes, but little does he know the whole trial is fake and everyone involved is an actor. For a couple of episodes I was wondering if maybe he was an actor too, but as it gathered steam I realized that nope he definitely has no idea that this is fake.
First off, I haven't laughed out loud like I did to this show since I watched Cunk on Earth. There were SO MANY ridiculous hilarious situations I can't even begin to pick a favorite. The actors did a fantastic job in their roles, and it was a blast to feel like I was in on the joke.
The last episode is more of an explainer episode about the whole process, and my god I truly grinned ear to ear the whole episode. It was just such wholesome fun.
Ronald is a gem, and they picked a really good one to participate, he was kind, real, and funny throughout and handled the absurdity like a champ. James Marsden was great as an exaggerated celebrity version of himself, with so many funny moments.
I absolutely recommend this show, I've been recommending it to everyone and I'm actually on my second watch now which is just as good as the first one.
The Verdict Is: This Show Is A Winner.
The Covenant (2023)
Really fantastic
I went into this as someone who is not a huge fan of war or military movies but is a HUGE Jake Gyllenhaal fan, so it was a required watch. I'm pretty thankful for that because it was a fantastic movie with the perfect amount of action, thrill, and humanistic feelings.
I also think this was the first movie where I noticed how great the score (that's what you call the music in the movie, right?) was. The music always reflected what I was feeling at the time and it helped with telling the story.
I'm running out of things to say, but I have to say 600 characters...Jake was amazing as he always is and the actor who played Ahmed was great as well!
Alice, Darling (2022)
Such a bummer
I wanted to like this movie so bad. I waited and waited and waited for it to come out in theaters, and when it finally did it turned out I couldn't even see it because I didn't have the right kind of theater in my area. So then I waited and waited for it to stream somewhere, anywhere.
*Finally* I could rent it. For $6 or something. I was in.
I wish I would've just waited for it to be free, even though I very much like Anna Kendrick and want to support her movies. This movie was so lacking in just about every aspect. The characters were not nearly developed enough, the story was slowwwww, and nothing actually *happened*. No big climax, no solution, nothing.
I have been in an abusive relationship. I know some of the ins and outs of such a situation. Let me tell you that if I were on that trip and my friend had taken my phone I would have gotten it back *immediately*. I can feel the adrenaline rush just thinking about that situation occurring when I was in the thralls of my relationship. And I get that Anna didn't want to show Simon and Alice interact, and she wanted it to just be Alice, but my gosh if that wouldn't have helped us figure out what the heck was going on. Alice seemed so much like a generally anxious person, not a person anxious because of her relationship, and perhaps showing more of it could have helped us feel for her and understand what she had been going through.
A few positives I will say: the scene when Alice is rehearsing the lie she's going to tell Simon so she will be able to go on the girls trip, THAT felt real and relatable. Should've carried that same tone throughout the movie. Well, I started that paragraph as though I would be listing a few positives, but that one is all I got.
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
Really?
I'm shocked this has such good reviews...or rather a good overall review score. This movie was awful. I wanted to like it so bad but I just couldn't! There was not nearly enough character development, I truly couldn't have cared less about a single one of them. I kept thinking maybe just mayyyyyybe the end would be amazing and it would've all been worth it, but nope.
Basically, the world is going to end if one of this family's members doesn't die...as a sacrifice. It kind of had a Killing of a Sacred Deer vibes in that sense, but Deer succeeded where Knock just fell felt. I thought for sure it would end with someone being delusional and imaging the whole thing. Or the parents setting it up? I just wanted it to be *something* but it never ended up being anything.
I would definitely not watch this again; and I'm actually sad because I only saw it because I missed the time for the movie I really wanted to see today.
Oh, shout out to the actress who played the daughter, she has so much potential!!
Pamela, a Love Story (2023)
Who knew I would absolutely love Pamela Anderson
Ok, so as a 33 year old I was a bit young to really follow the Pamela Anderson of the 90s. The only things I ever really knew about her were that she was a blonde model who was naked a lot and was in some sex tape. I had seen her on stuff I guess, but never really even thought of her other than as "the blonde bimbo".
After watching this I'm both sad and happy for that. Having not followed it, I have never seen said tape and I didn't watch the Hulu series. I'm SO glad for that because now that I know she didn't have any part in either of those things I wouldn't want to give them my attention anyway.
Pamela seems like such a genuine soul who is on this earth to love. I'm sad I never knew how she advocated for animals. She has such a pure heart and it really showed in this doc. Her sons clearly love her as much as she loves them and I love their fun dynamic.
I was crying like a baby listening to her talk about Tommy. Wow, I never knew they were so in love. But huge respect to her for leaving when she knew she needed to. And I just love how she didn't say a single bad word about anyone. She just doesn't seem like the type who would.
A Night at the Roxbury (1998)
I'm laughing just thinking about the movie
This one has always been one of my go-to movies if I just want to laugh and not worry too much about anything. Will Ferrell is great and Chris Katan is HILARIOUS in this one. They play dim witted rich brothers whose biggest dream is to get into the Roxbury. I'm laughing again as I write this. LOL.
I introduced my boyfriend to this one thinking he wouldn't be a fan because "dumb humor" isn't really his thing, but he laughed out loud along with me through most of it. 9/10 because I've never actually given a movie a 10 rating.
Nope (2022)
It wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't great
I really don't get all the high reviews for this! It was kind of slow, kind of absurd.... I'm not giving it a really low score, but seriously it is not a 7.5.
I was incredibly bored through most of the movie, the main character was rather blah...which I think was just his character, but still. I loved Keke Palmer's character, she was definitely comedic relief and I found her enjoyable.
Overall, it's a nope for me. I wish I would have just rented it for cheaper instead of paying to see it in theaters.
Shattered (2022)
It's really not that bad
Sure, this isn't an *amazing* movie, but I don't regret watching it! I just wonder if the director knows someone with trypophobia that they wanted to mess with though because soooooo many backdrops triggered mine LOL.
The Lost City (2022)
Fun and cute!
I went into this movie with pretty low expectations, honestly, but I left feeling happy that I saw it. I didn't see any trailers for the movie, which I try my best to do with comedies/scary movies in case all the good parts are in the trailer, so I didn't know what to expect.
There were quite a few times I laughed out loud, and I was SHOCKED by the chemistry Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum had.....the dance scene! Oh my gosh, swoon.
I will definitely watch this again when it comes out on streaming, so I can hopefully find some little nuggets I missed the first time and have some more laughs.
Deep Water (2022)
If you want to despise characters, this one's for you
I have never, and I truly mean never, despised a character as much as I despised Ana de Armas' character in this movie.
I can't even think of anything else to say. I couldn't get past it. What an awful concept and awful, awful characters.
Ben Affleck's character was frustrating as well, but not as despicable as Ana's.
I gave it a 5 because I don't regret watching it, but I sure won't watch it again.
He's All That (2021)
I don't understand all the hate!
My real review number is probably a 6.5/10, but giving it a 10 to try to balance this out. I truly don't understand all the hate this movie is getting! It was a really cute Gen Z retelling of a classic movie! Of course it wasn't like She's All That, things change in 22 years believe it or not! There were awesome cameos (RLC and Matthew Lillard), cute homages to the original (the jerk best friend, the spunky little sister, the dance off, the "why do I know this song?", etc.), and typical Gen Z social media material.
I really DO NOT understand why everyone is hating on this so bad. Addison Rae was endearing and adorable, Tanner Buchanan was an awesome lead, and all the rest of the characters were believable.
In my opinion, if you're a true She's All That fan, you should appreciate this. Just remember it isn't FOR YOU, it's for the next generation. Why is everyone such haters?!
Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
I don't understand these bad reviews!
Real rating - 7, trying to counteract all these negative reviews.
This was a fun movie for me and the kids. I loved all the references to other movies and the cameos. It's definitely geared towards this generation of children with the video game/technology aspect.
Give it a chance, don't listen to these negative reviews!
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Amazing!
I absolutely loved this film! The acting, the writing, the directing, all A+++.
