Solid new comedy
11 October 2021
I honestly don't understand the bad reviews. I get if you don't find the resort pool-boy setting interesting, but 1 star?? It feels like some of these people just don't like Apple focusing on a Mexican family. It's not even all Spanish.

Anyway, the show is pretty simple, with an older version of the main character narrating the story to his grandson, which is a bit cliched, but the story has heart and I found myself laughing a few times.

Most Relatable Show I've Seen
12 August 2021
I knew I loved this show 10 minutes in when Mr. Corman spoke exactly like me. Everything he said on the couch with his friend is exactly what I say/think and my friends agree lol. It's great to see something so relatable that's not just like nostalgia comedy. I went in expecting to hate it because most things that touch in depression are preachy and pretentious (this is too), but it does a good job.

I think it's funny
26 March 2021
Recently started watching, so haven't watched older episodes as they're no longer topical, so I don't what it was like then, though it probably didn't change much. The show's just really goofy, and the lack of a studio audience doesn't help, but if you like silly-turn-your-brain-off humor, it's pretty funny. Also it's not all about race and politics, so I don't know where that idea came from-maybe it was more prominent in the earlier episodes.

Lovely Show for Young Kids
21 February 2021
If you have young kids this is one of the best shows out there. It teaches valuable lessons, not about words or math like some shows, but about life. And I imagine if I was a kid, I'd love the big fluffy panda.

If you don't have kids and are bored enough to read this review, I'd recommend watching the first half of the first episode (each made of two 15 minute episodes) to appreciate this for what it is.

90% of the time, slow burn is an excuse
8 February 2021
I can't understand the raving reviews for this. It's not the worst, but it's not good. The "slow burn" is just boring, drawn-out, overdramatic set-up. I don't mind political messages, and I align with these views, but you really can't excuse what's plain bad pacing. I don't care how good it gets.

Beginning Season 2 (Spoilers for Season 1, not 2)
8 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I thought this show was a solid 8 last season, but now it's either 9, or maybe 10 if the seasono continues as it is. Writing this after the episode 2:00, I'm beyond excited to see what's going to happen next.

Unlike some others, I never found this show all that boring. I enjoy the realitvely short runtime of each episode, and how every episode's a bottle episode, taking palce almost entirely in the house, and I absolutely love the food element, and liked the odd, somewhat surreal elements in the later episodes. The only weak one, I thought, was episode 8, "Boba".

I wasn't too excited for season two. I thought the bottle element might stop when they have to search for Jericho, but it didn't. It still feels the same and the tension is only raised. I think this show's thoroughly underrated and if you're not sure whether to watch season 2, I urge you to do so. It only gets better. Not broing, more thrilling and shocking, and some of Shyamalan's best work imo.

Best Limited Show (imo)
27 October 2020
There's already enough reviews here, but this show is so good I have to say something anyway. I already somewhat liked chess going into this, but this show made it unbelievably exciting. Of course, the show isn't really about chess, so much as it uses the game as a plot device to show the growth and development of Beth from a young kid to a famous adult, while exploring all the pain and trouble that comes from being an orphan, being exposed to drugs at a young age, being exposed to fame at a young age, etc. Some people say they dragged the show out longer than it had to be, but I disagree. I think the added experiences makes the series more satisfying, and I, personally, never found it boring. The cinamatography and costume and set design made sure of that. Overall, I'd call this a must watch and am already recommending it to everyone I know.

Not the best show out there, but certainly funny
17 September 2020
This show makes me laugh out loud more than any I can think of. It's not the best show, it doesn't have much depth, but it's definitely worth a watch if you like comedy.

One of my favorites shows
15 June 2020
This is a strangely good show, mainly because of the lead. Jack Griffin is a great and likable character helped a lot by Glenn's performance. The rest of the cast is pretty good too and the kids' relationship with Jack is endearing. The bad thing, especially at the beginning of the series, is that it plays too much into the formulaic old sitcom tropes of a similar conflict each week followed by a heartwarming (cheesy) ending and a return to the status quo. I feel like this is less pronounced in the later parts of season two, and with the show moving to streaming only, I hope they drop the weekly sitcom formula to let the show be what it could be, and hopefully give Jack a meaningful change.

Finds its Footing
7 May 2020
I hope if/when a season 2 comes out, prospective watchers might find this review helpful.

To be honest, after watching the pilot I literally rated this show 1 star. It was very, very bad. It tried to be a horror thriller, but had bad acting and a weird amount of jokes. I feel the pilot was rushed and the show runners still weren't quite sure where they were taking the show. However, I kept watching, because it was good in a so-bad-it's-funny way.

The next few episodes are better than the pilot. They slowly dialed down the main character's crazy to something more believable and reasonable, which made the whole show feel less bad-funny. Of course, it takes some episodes to get into the real story, the one involving the character's family, and for a time it's a fairly boring cop show, somewhat like a criminal minds.

By the end of what I like to call Arc 1 (ep 1-10/the fall season) I knew and cared about the characters and was engrossed in the story, though binging became a bit boring. I'll confess, I almost stopped watching after episode 11 (the resolution episode to 10's climax) because I thought Malcom was getting a bit too lucky and unrealistically strong/smart. I started to dislike the main character, and that's obviously never a good thing. But, I am glad I continued watching.

I think I finished the 2nd/winter arc (ep. 11-20) in two days. It's fairly easy to overlook Malcom's luckiness and thugs become more realistic again (some disbelief must be suspended however, as the weekly nature of the show needs a case to be solved every episode). Soon, however, things start ramping up in the main story, until this entwines with the episodic killings and the whole thing morphs more and more into mystery. By the end of the 19th episode I couldn't wait to watch the finale and it payed off, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and I swear I sat with my mouth open for a good 5 minutes.

Overall, the show starts without an identity, then slowly finds its footing, while in a boring set-up phase. Things soon ramp up, however, as the mystery becomes engrossing and the characters become memorable, before the first season ends with a huge bang.

I'm confident if you watch this show you will like it by the end.

This better win every Emmy

If this doesn't win every Emmy, there's something wrong. (Free Churro lost outstanding animated program last year)
