Chastity (1969)
A Strange vehicle for Cher
In Cher's first attempt in a dramatic role she is found drifting through her young teenage life searching for her identity. She hitch-hikes to Mexico picking up truck-drivers as well as a boyfriend along the way.Her dysfunctional family and abuse follows her ,haunting her as she lives out her escapades wearing the same top and jeans till it makes you a bit nauseous! Her foray into the comfort of lesbianism,is short-circuited by her traditional American values, and Chastity tries the "straight life" one more failed time. The script is trite, and the story jaded .Cher has said the rough stuff was excluded,as Sonny Bono couldn't stand to see his wife do "those things". All in all a cool 60's trip, with an amateurish and weird aura! Chasity later became the name of Cher's daughter conceived during this movie!
Cher (1975)
Great Stuff, and not available yet on DVD
This very colorful and engaging variety show had all the splash that the 70's wanted to be .Cher does it all(acting, singing, dancing, joking) and is simply stunning ,never second fiddle to any of her famous guests! Musical numbers are great!! I would love to relive these shows! Some of her guests are Jimmy Durante,Tatum O'Neal,Raquel Welsch,as well as Greg Allman, and Kris and Rita! Her duets with Ray Charles(Georgia),and Elto John(Benny and the Jetts) are superb! It would be fitting to release a DVD of the costumed musical numbers alone.Producer George Sclatter outdid himself with color and momentum! A 70's high point."Cher" was the best musical -variety show of the 70's! Even, surpassing the Sonny and Cher comedy hour.
Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (1982)
Perhaps one of the best ensembles
This movie really brings a small suffocating set into a moving spatial experience. The actresses are all in full throttle.Sandy Dennis is wonderful as the neurotic and bizarre Mona, who professes that her life and body have been touched by the fan clubs idol "James Dean". This is Cher's first legit movie, and she is brilliantly captivating as the brazen and earthy "Sissy". The plot is complicated by flashes to the past and back into the present reunion of the 20 yr date of Dean's death. Karen Black is uniquely odd as the strange visitor(that doesn't resemble the early club photo) that has the cast guessing. It is truly a sin that this Altman master-piece has not been released on DVD yet.Under-rated and brilliant!
