Knocked Up (2007)
Funny yet endearing movie.
31 December 2018
This is a great comedy film from the Apatow camp. Knocked up is silly, offensive and yet romantic. For Knocked Up, writer/director Judd Apatow's sophomore feature, the filmmaker has elected to follow pretty much the same formula that made his debut, The 40 Year Old Virgin, such a success. Considering how winning the formula is, it's a safe approach. The often ribald humor is genuinely funny. The characters are endearing and very well played by Seth Rogen(Who is right at home here in this material) and Katherine Heigl. And there's something warm and sweet about the underlying storyline. Apatow is clearly a romantic, even if there's a profane edge to his "love conquers all" worldview. Other filmmakers embarking into the comedy minefield could learn a thing or two from him.

Better to have left these creatures in their original films.

This is an insult to the creatures of the first 2 Alien films and the first Predator. Alien Vs. Predator is a gimmick - an all-too-blatant attempt to lure fanboys away from their computer games and into theaters. It's not likely that the movie will be of great interest to anyone else, except perhaps as a curiosity. As an attempt to revive two flagging franchises, the film succeeds in reminding us of how far they have fallen. Sure, the Aliens in Alien Vs. Predator look just like their Aliens counterparts, but gone is the creepy terror they once produced. And, compared to the hunter of Predator, the creatures in this movie turn out to be pushovers. The atmosphere is alright and I guess there is some frill to the proceedings but overall its better to go watch these glorious monsters in their original films.

Galaxy Quest (1999)
Funny comedy scifi movie.
24 October 2018
Its better if you know about Star Trek before sitting down to watch this movie. For those few potential viewers who are completely ignorant of Star Trek, the movie still offers a mildly enjoyable (although completely predictable) storyline of normal people who become heroes. In addition, there's the fish out of water aspect of actors having to fly a space ship. In many ways, Galaxy Quest is more fantasy than science fiction. It's a lighthearted romp. If you buy into the infectious (but admittedly corny) spirit, you'll enjoy the experience. Those expecting a heavy dose of action and adventure or some genuine substance will be disappointed. Galaxy Quest isn't always funny, but, for the most part, it is fun. And, in terms of production values, the film looks a lot better than one might expect from a space comedy. Most of the special effects are first-rate. And as a bonus Sigourney looks gorgeous.

Homer on the big screen is a sight to behold.

If you are a fan of the television show you will not be disappointed at all. Everyone of the Springfield characters we have come to love and adore has something to do in the film. Homer is at his best, as is Grandpa and Bart. The celebrities are all over the place from Tom Hanks to Greenday and the pacing is good- It just feels like an extended episode. The Simpsons are often said to have jumped the shark some time ago but this film is a healthy reminder that it is still an incredibly witty show with great writers. .

Great thriller from 1990.

Pacific Heights works because of Michael Keaton. Pacific Heights is an underrated movie and has Michael Keaton playing a sinister role as the tenant from hell. Melanie Griffith and Mathew Modine play a yuppie San Francisco couple who rent out their sublet to others. Unfortunately Michael Keaton- a rich but shady customer enters the fray and immediately convinces them to let him stay. It's a psychological thriller with a nice setting. I suggest you go in with an open mind.
