Hellraiser (2022)
this was bad.
The two hours i spent watching this movie would have been put to better use had i watched a toilet flush for that amount of time. JK, it wasn't really that horrible but it was a waste of time and i was excited for it so ultimately quite the letdown. Basically all the gore is CGI and i didn't find anything particularly scary about the cenobites. But to each their own, i'm sure someone enjoyed this and the actors did the best they could given the circumstances. Stop letting white men direct movies period end of sentence. The mise en scene of the film to me smelled like a damp paper towel and rust.
Le Cinquième Élément (1997)
bad ideas, great costumes
What this movie has to say about love and the "ideal" woman is so unbelievably gross. It's easy to be distracted from the incredibly sexist ideas that underlie the film because of the idiosyncratic performances and flashy set pieces (which are fun to watch), but that doesn't make this film any less deserving of critique. That being said, the costumes (by jean paul gaultier!!!) are banging and i would recommend watching this movie just to see them. Go figure!
I See You (2019)
Tyra said it best...
"It's so bad I want to give it a zero. But that's not possible, so I give you... a one."
this movie isn't fun bad, it's bad bad. So much potential but just ends up being a waste of time. And helen hunt is barely even in it!!! Ugh.
Hungry Joe (2020)
loved it until the end
I really liked this short up until the end. i agree with the other reviewer that it should've ended earlier. of course there's a fascination with the titular character, but it should've begun and ended with his mother giving him nourishment. i think this ending downplays the fact that the rest of the film largely centered on her intense frustration and exhaustion from caring for her child. other than that, i really enjoyed it and was successfully grossed out!
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
i <3 this movie!
This is one of those movies i can't seem to tear myself away from when it comes on tv. the entire film is a masterclass in creating (and sustaining) tension, from the tight editing to the camera work that inhabits different povs, especially clarice's, at crucial moments. the rare and deftly portrayed perspective of a woman trying to make it in a male-dominated profession remains as compelling to me the umpteenth time watching this movie as it did the first. i also love the way this movie looks-not as dark and gritty as a mid-90s entry like se7en, but just gloomy enough to ground the elaborately gruesome habits of two distinct serial killers. absolute banger of a film!
The Invisible Man (2020)
great flick!
All the negative reviews i'm seeing about this movie are by men, so do with that information what you will. this movie is scary, relevant, and concise. it was over before i knew it, and all i could think as the credits rolled was that i wanted to watch it again. it looks slick both in terms of set design and effects and the entire vibe of paranoia is palpable. and it sticks the landing--the end is super satisfying and has stuck as one of my favorite endings to a horror movie. great casting, acting, directing. in conclusion, great flick!
