Harry Brown (2009)
Why the high rating?
I saw the reviews on IMDb and downloaded this flick with the expectation of seeing a 7/10 rated feature.I was so amazed when the film finally came to an end that I sat there in awe wondering if there was another part coming in a few seconds to fulfill the rest of the movie.
Up to now I have no idea why this film got such a high rating!!!! It's very basic, predictable, there was no outstanding acting from any of the actors and the story line is one that has been showed on the big screen many times in the past. The only reason I can say this was rated so highly is probably because it is an English flick.
Anyways, the flick is watchable, just don't expect to want to watch it a second time.I barely made it through the first...good luck.
Wanted (2008)
I usually reserve my comments but ...READ THIS
I don't want to get to much in depth about the flick, so I'll just keep it as short and precise as possible. If you are into the action/thriller genre then this is a flick you must watch. The reasoning behind the way the assassins are developed is original and the camera effects are sublime. I must give accolades to the director responsible for the taking of those fantastic action scenes.
I read some of the comments above where people trashed this movie. I can't possible imagine how this movie can be trashed by anyone who appreciated flicks such as the matrix, equilibrium etc. The tag line at the end was definitely a catchy one which made us rewind the explanation at the end of the movie some 3-4 times. The plot was also pretty decent, but bear in mind that it is in the action/thriller genre with more emphasis based on the action.
Overall it was a great flick and I'd actually watch it again. Watch it and be your own judge.
8/10
Khon fai bin (2006)
Definitely worth watching
Honestly now...I read the comments before i watched this feature film, and I must say that I am glad I paid little to no interest in some of the posts i saw prior to my actual viewing. One must wonder what some of the so called "critics" use as the fundamentals for judging when they view different genres of movies.I mean come on now...it's a MARTIAL ARTS MOVIE...what we want to see is martial arts action...if you want a great plot then go and watch a psychological thriller or a drama. However, this is not to say that the plot of the feature film was at all empty, as I would say that the plot was far more fulfilling that our glamorized "Onk Bak". The action in this feature was definitely entertaining, and the special power aspect gave rising to that of "Kung fu Hustle" while still retaining a realistic point of view.
To summarize it all I would say that any martial arts fan or action lover will definitely agree that "Dynamite Warrior" surpasses the expectations beyond that of satisfactory. I rate it a solid 7/10 after all was considered, as it managed to give me a feeling of euphoria after my viewing....something which rarely happens. Do enjoy.
Babel (2006)
This tried to be like Crash but crashed
I just came from watching this 2 hr marathon of a film called "Babel" and I must say that it indeed lives up to its name. So much so that the whole theatre just left in silence as a very cliché 2 hr flick passed right before their very eyes. I have seen many others give this film an extremely high rating such as 8 and 9 out of 10, but really i must ask on what do they rate a flick....the actor??? the plot???? special effects????? honestly I'm lost on this one. For me I use two things...1) If the film was entertaining and 2) the way the message was put across and obviously that forces me to make a comparison between other movies of the same genre movies. Now, for those that gave this movie 8+ I must ask them what rating they gave Crash....Crash was times better in terms of plot, suspense, projection, character building and the way in which everything was tied together in the end. I really bonded with the majority of the characters in Crash, however in Babel there was really no great building of any particular character persay, making it hard to feel empathy for their situations as the film began to unfold. There were many scenes that made little or no sense example...the boy masturbating...i mean if they had a discussion about the girl that could have evoked sensual emotions then i could understand, but instead they go from shooting, to quareling then to masturbation????? and another example was when the deaf girl went to the club and started partying...that was an extremely long scene, probably nearly 4 mins and in the end all that happened was that a guy she liked kissed another girl????? it was a complete waste of time as an event such as that could have been summed up in less than 60 secs of film. In the end of the picture no one even knew what the girl told the cop...unless of course you speak and read the language that was spoken.
On a whole the picture wasn't the worst, but i would put it on par with American Gun and not a picture that got best picture of the year like Crash. This rating on IMDb is probably because people love Brad Pitt, but the rating here is definitely too high by all logical parameters. It deserves 6/10....and if you doubt this please watch it for yourself.
Casino Royale (2006)
Wow...wow...wowwwwwwwwwwwww
I just finished watching Daniel Craig playing as James Bond and I must say that it was the most intense Bond I've ever seen on the big screen.
He brings a rougher element to the usual all suave James Bond, but this new Bond is a man who does what it takes to get the job done while getting the same perks as his previous predecessors. The picture was fast paced action and a battle of wit from the incipient phases of the flick to the very end.
The stunts performed by the new Bond really showed the intensity within the actor and made his presence come to life on the screen which impacted the overall picture in a very positive way. Overall I am very impressed with the production and I can't wait to see Daniel Craig in another James Bond sequel.
My rating for this flick is 9/10...definitely a must watch
Silent Hill (2006)
Yawn
I'm honestly in a rush right now, but i see it as my patriotic duty to warn you all innocent tax paying citizens about this movie. Firstly, it's based off a video game, which means that from inception it was going to be difficult unless there was some genius behind the plot ( we're still awaiting the arrival of the genius). The eerie silent hill atmosphere surrounding the actual game was excellent as it really depicted that element from the game, however everything else was in pure shambles. The acting sucked to an extreme I never expected...how in God's earth can a woman who lost a child in a ghost town act so calmly when arrested after being chased by seemingly alien life forms??? A woman that calm wouldn't have wanted to go to Silent Hill in the first place. The cgi was "ok" i guess, although it can't be compared to great works such as The Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and Lord of the Rings. The ending also leaves only the perception of the imagination, as there's really nothing in the movie that explains what actually happened in the end. Overall i think i lost a few IQ points from this movie, and I would suggest for you to rent it on tape, borrow the DVD or just don't watch it at all.
Overall rating 4/10
Miami Vice (2006)
I would rather watch a household plant breathe
To be brief as not to waste any more precious time talking about the crap i just paid money to see... let me say that the script was obscure, pace of the flick was too slow, not the best of acting (jamies's acting was good though) , hard to follow themes (at times), very very very predictable plot (and boring as well )and lack of a needed climax. The action scenes were graphic however and well portrayed for the audience.
Overall I would say IMHO that it is a flick i would ad=vise people to rent from a video store or read a summary magazine as the whole flick can be limned in about one paragraph (despite it was nerely 2 hrs long) i would rate it a 4 out of 10
Mission: Impossible III (2006)
What do people use to rate pictures these days?
OK, now lets start from the beginning. I watched this movie at its opening last night, and got a little less than what i initially bargained for. I knew that the picture had many conflicts on the set (especially with actor/director Tom Cruise), but I never thought that it would have been what i saw last night.First let me say that the movie in itself wasn't a bad flick, it's just that the title alone being "MISSION IMPOSSIBLE" has certain connotations that MI3 was unable to represent or even remotely capture...meaning that there weren't any action packed and breathtaking climaxes that would make you sit and wonder in uttermost amazement how the hell this man was able to accomplish such a feat. After MI2 there were certain scenes that were virtually unforgettable (such as Tom Cruise hanging from the ice in the beginning and the motorcycle fight near the end etc) however in this movie after watching it i have now recollection of any outstanding scenes that would be worthy of making a note to self or to use as the bar for future motion flicks.
The movie left you during the course of its duration trying desperately to fit together pieces of a puzzle...for example, what the hell was the rabbit foot? (note that the whole picture was virtually revolving around this so called "rabbit foot". Only near the end was it clear what it was, and even then it really isn't that clear as i still have no idea to the magnitude of destruction this "rabbit foot" was capable of. When Tom Cruise went for the rabbit foot he went into a "high security building", and just came out through a window...his team spent more time getting him to the building than helping him acquire this "rabbit foot". From looking at the flick it seems as though he just walked in, found it in a bag by the window and jumped out the nearest window.
The fighting scenes were definitely below par, and the camera's angles weren't as articulate as one would expect for a flick of this sensationalized magnitude. The sound sucked in terms of the hype on certain scenes, but then again maybe that was due to the fact of there hardly being any notable scenes to begin with. Mission impossible is also known for the theme sound being played during the movie in times where something which is seemingly impossible or brilliant is about to occur. In this flick we heard the music to scenes tantamount to a man running away, sigh very disappointing indeed.
The overall plot was OK but very predictable and trite. If you're one who can analyse a movie instead of pandering to the hype and the actor, you will realise that there is much work that was left unresolved in the case of MI3.
Tom acted well and so did the cast although time wasn't really spent developing the characters seen throughout the movie...i could go on for ever, but to make a long story short i say this...if i had to choose between watching MI3 or watching 3 MI3 TV EPISODES I'D GLADLY CHOOSE THE LATTER.
i rate this movie a 6
Qi jian (2005)
I am astonished at the ratings i've seen thus far...
I'm sorry guys, but this flick had me literally dozing off and thinking seriously about becoming a director in the movie business. With all the high ratings and all i really expected something that would be able to sustain my cinematic interests. I'm probably the only one who's going to rate this movie poorly, so i suggest that you do watch it, and if you agree with me you'll know that in future flicks we may agree on what's boring or not.
First of all the kung fu scenes were poor in comparison to modern day scenes. I hate when i have to imagine what happened in a fight...good gosh man!!!i mean the reason we watch movies is to observe something without having to imagine it ourselves. If we wanted to do the imagining i think we would be better off reading a book. The fighting scenes in my opinion were cheap and didn't give you the in-depth detail needed to make you feel as though you were part of the actual fight. For "top martial artist" i didn't find the fighters to be very skilled or to display actions that would definitely elevate their fighting status above that of the average fighter. All they seemed to have were some fancy swords which at times seemed to be more of a burden to them than a weapon.
The special effects were also poor and the clichéd dialogie made the movie seem quite trite and predictable throughout the entire picture.
I really didn't enjoy this movie at all as it is no where close to proper movies such as "The House of Flying Daggers", Fearless etc... If you have to miss this movie trust me, someone may have done you a favour by mistake ;)...I rate this picture a 3 out of 10...
Hostel (2005)
What the hell was this?????????????
Well personally in my humble opinion, this film could have been produced on your local farm and the animals used as the acting cast. However i do see how certain viewers who just like bad acting, a few scenes of gore and mild pornography could like this picture...actually wait...no,i really can't see how anyone who has ever watched a decent film, or possesses any form of imagination would rate this movie anything more than a 3.
The dialogue is too cliché, the acting poor and honestly the so called "sceens of gore" have been found wanting in many areas. If you are a fan of the film "Beyond The Limits", then you may be able to bear this amalgamation of visual sleeping pills coupled with some of the poorest acting you've ever seen. These low budget films if they are to stand out needs a good plot, which this particular film lacks entirely.
My advice is to watch this flick in order to protect yourself from overhiped films like this in the future. However if you have to choose between watching this film and doing the dishes to please someone in your family...trust me...THIS FLICK CAN WAIT!!!
