Elijah Roth meet Stalker in Siberia
28 October 2020
A very genre-oriented series where the Russians revealed all their cruelty, profanity, hatred of people and LGBT people, bestial attitude towards women, unmotivated violence in the spirit of Elijah Roth, allusions to the cannibal Holocaust, majestic nature and locations, the wild atmosphere of the first "Wrong turn". Show about survival-as an example of Social Darwinism in modern Russia. Tourists don't belong here . Very wild, bloody, and uncompromising . There will be no mercy . A rating of +21, definitely .

Red Sparrow (2018)
cognitive dissonance about II ColdWar
31 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The return of the cold war is not a forecast of irresponsible futurologists, but our reality. The only question is whether it is in full swing or just gaining momentum. But it's one thing when politicians play these games enthusiastically, and quite another - if culture is included in them. A few days passed after a pitching in the Ministry of culture of Russia, where the project "Tolerance" - about the European province, dying under the yoke of sex minorities and migrants. And I would like to answer that the West is smarter, stamping clichés are not interested. But the screen goes to "Red Sparrow".

It is hard to believe that the action of this spy Thriller takes place in our days. Even more difficult - that he shot today, not 40 years ago. But we have to admit that for many foreign producers, Directors and screenwriters, as well as writers ("Red Sparrow" is based on the novel by Jason Matthews), the current Russia is absolutely no different from the stagnant Soviet Union. The main plans of the state are still-the victory over the free capitalist world, the most important intrigue - the covert struggle of intelligence, favorite entertainment - ballet at the Bolshoi theater. And we always snow and drink vodka. Even the word " red "in the name, directly beaten in the color of the heroine's clothes, is still equivalent to the word"Russian".

Beauty Dominika (in Russian dubbing a little less absurd, "Veronica") Egorova - leading ballerina and niece of an important rank of the Foreign intelligence service of Ivan Egorov, which, of course, calls uncle Vanya. Intrigue in the troupe leads her to a terrible injury, incompatible with the continuation of a professional career. Then Veronica (Jennifer Lawrence), who has to pay for an apartment and something to treat a seriously ill mother, is recorded at the suggestion of his uncle in the "sparrows"-the security service, consisting of highly qualified and ruthless temptresses. It is she who will find in the leadership of our intelligence "mole" and seduce his curator, American spy Nash (Joel Edgerton). if it was a Comedy parody or even a pastiche, of which there are in recent years, a similar theme was enough, "Agent A. N. To.L.", "The explosive blonde" and others - one could laugh to his heart's content. But Director Francis Lawrence-the author of three series of "Hunger games" and an important person in the career of the famous actress-namesake - is extremely serious. He carefully plays in neonoir, enjoy an imaginary exotic, sincerely feels the author whether "red heat", or "Gorky Park" is a funny and heartwarming hits of the 1980s. And some Schubert with Bruckner gives a great behind the scenes actually composer James Newton Howard! Apparently, I remembered how he wrote the soundtrack for propaganda "Russian" in 1987.

Actors are also good: especially Jeremy irons in a dapper Soviet uniform (General Korchnoy) and Kieran Hines in an elegant civilian (General Zakharov). Cute Belgian Matthias Sonarda on the role of "uncle Vanya" clearly picked only because he looks like a youthful version of Putin. But the coolest here, Charlotte Rampling, somehow agreeing on the role of instructress "sparrows", her name is the code name of "Matron".

By the way, the film shows the reverse side - it has a small detachment of CIA agents. But this is immediately evident: people are principled, decent, even compassionate at times.

In "Red Sparrow" quite a lot of fighting and sex, but much more meaningful silent views, negotiations on spy jargon and penetrations through dark corridors or streets. And the simultaneous predictability and tension of the intrigue make the show extremely dull.

It is unlikely that American cinema has received an order to expose Putin's Russia and rushed to carry it out. We are talking only about the invincible clichés, which today again seem to the Western audience believable and therefore sold well. As we all have reached such primitive schemes, we can only guess. The only consolation in this situation is that even the cold war today is hybrid. Therefore, the "Red Sparrow" comes out painlessly in Russia, and the Russian audience will have a full opportunity to laugh at the fantasies of foreign writers.
