Red Notice (2021)
Pack your bags
Your sense of reality can pack it bags and go on holidays, because you won't be needing it for this movie. The plot is chasing around the world for a golden egg. Don't over think it, that's it. Now this film has a feel that everyone on the set had a great time and at the end of the day some nice memories were made and everyone got paid. Great work if you can find it. Its just a shame no one cared about the actual movie, because its only going on Netflix so what the heck. Gal Godat has been working on getting a stronger American accent and possibly her acting skills. The rock is special guest as the rock and plays the same character you've known from any movie he has ever made. He just looks older, but is clearly relaxed and already working out in his mind how he is going to spend the pay cheque. Lots of situations are created for Ryan Reynolds to try out his ab lib skills as there is no script to speak of and its a chance for most of the production crew to get a long lunch while he has fun with his friends on Netflix's dollar. Gal's breast size changes depending on how revealing the outfit, which honestly is the best practical effect in the movie. Speakng of effects the 3D ones are awful and a lot of the green screen work is also very obvious. Still everyone had such a great time they are expecting to make a sequel, which means the writer (you really don't need two) are going to need a new table napkin to write the next movies story line and script on. Can someone please go to the Netflix head office and organise the transfer of the money. Thanks.
Doctor Who: The Tsuranga Conundrum (2018)
We are all travelling to planet Meh in the PC system
I'm not a die hard fan of Dr Who, but rather a casual viewer. I've probably seen seventy percent of the episodes since Ecclestone came onto the screen as Dr Who and generally I've enjoyed them and yes, some have been better then others. I didn't watch them all when they first aired, but on Netflix or IView. As a kid of I watched many of the original batch of Doctors too as they were endlessly repeated on the ABC here in Australia. So I like the show, but life for me goes on if I miss an episode.
I was looking forward to this season as I never really warmed to the last Dr incarnation and having a women playing the lead didn't worry me in the slightest. Now we are at episode five and really the writing is just awful. Really, really awful. Nothing is subtle and at no time are we the audience intelligent enough to figure anything out. Everything must be explained to us and everything must have a message attached to it. Honestly the writer of this show would bore me silly at a dinner party, if this is how he sees himself and the world.
Jodi might be fine, but its hard to tell. The scripts are awful and her character so far just seems weak and confused. The only thing she seems adamant about is not shooting anything. Otherwise she's not exactly playing the Dr, but rather a less convincing companion. Speaking of companions, having three isn't working out either. None have enough screen time and as in this episode it became necessary to park them in little side adventures, so they actually had enough time for the story.
A lot have complained about the PC side of this season and yes its there and its served up in spades. I don't mind a moral message to a story, but this writer is so hit you over the head with it, its insulting. The casting of actors is also so PC, its almost like a diversity workshop. It really is at a point that its become counter productive as its not adding to the story, limiting the actors to choose from and the writer has bigger problems to deal with like writing engaging stories that work.
For me this is about the end of the road for this season. I actually rolled my eyes when I saw the subject matter for the next episode. That one will have so many messages it might be a struggle to have any engaging story at all.
The BBC need to fix this as its a real mess.
After Trek (2017)
What marketing is saying about their own show - watch After Trek
It is difficult to like a show that invites the public to ask questions and then proceeds to vet every question so criticism of the writing, plot holes or inconsistency with Star Trek canon, conveniently never get raised.
Marketing fluff.
Spectral (2016)
Rambo joins Delta Farce to shoot ghosts
I'm OK with a sci-fi premise, in-fact I like science fiction which is of course why I decided to watch this film. OK lets get to the two problems with this film.
First if the real Delta force were as macho, poorly trained and undisciplined as this lot, I would be rooting for the bad guys every time. They started the movie questioning their orders, because you know that's what professional soldiers do and then showed us that lack of discipline for the remainder of the movie. They all looked like they needed less steroids and tight fitting shirts and more basic drill.
Lets not start on the tactics they used. Yes they were actors and and as far as I could tell they all watched Rambo II for research and maybe a couple of video games.
That would all be forgivable if the story was good. The concept is fine, the execution is clichéd and well just uninteresting. I didn't care what happened to the characters, because well, they were all a pain in the ass.
It reminded me of the B grade 50's movies, just with less story and no one to like. I want a sequel, but only so the bad guys can win.
Pearl Harbor (2001)
Historical mess
Horrible film that has so many faults, it just isn't worth my time to list them all. By all means read the other reviews, as they give a good account of them. The Battle of Britain scenes had me shouting at the screen. Even if you put aside it is the wrong year! It was an insult, not least of all to the American volunteers who did serve in the war with Britain and were NOT part of the US military who at that point, did not consider Germany an enemy.
Why an event so significant as Pearl Harbour, wanted or needed the implausible and repeatedly inaccurate story line is beyond me. It was and is an important story to tell - the right way. Combine a script that would make a high school history teacher cringe, with an implausible love story and some of the worst acting I have seen in a while and you have a recipe for a movie that should never have made it to the screen.
Watch the twenty minutes of the actual raid. Discount the inaccuracies in it and then switch off the DVD player. The rest is pure drivel.
