Love Hard (2021)
Had me Loling at some points
Jimmy O Yang is just underrated. He was entertaining, endearing, and funny in this. Nina was funny, too. The karaoke scene was hilarious. There were points where it felt like they they could have shown stronger, better chemistry - something leading to the finale that we saw - and it made sense because he was a smarter, more solid dude, than his buddy. The director/writers could have done a better job developing the contrast between the two. But at most parts, the chemistry between Jimmy & Nina were lacking. He was just matter of fact and she was lukewarm -- more often displaying disinterest until the scene after collecting that newspapers - that was promising, but again, we didn't see them build on that. Still - the storyline was great, wasn't racist which was a nice surprise despite the many opportunities to be racist and Hollywood's track record, and was heartwarming at points. Fun holiday movie.
The Seasons (1987)
Many stories intricately woven together
Character development at its peak. This drama ran for many years and told the story of the members of the Tong family. The family was close, and the kids (young adults who lived in the home) were raised with good values and under the watchful eye of their Ma-Da. As they all each went through their respective trials and tribulations, the audience was ultimately reminded of the importance of family.
The stories were well-told and acting top-notch. I watched this on VHS tapes multiple times and never grew tired of it. Would purchase today if available.
Tian ling ling, di ling ling (1986)
Perfect for kids under 10
Scary enough to capture the attention of kids. Entertaining enough for us to have watched it weekly for a year.
Sleepers (1996)
Full of Suspense
Great acting, great movie. Some parts were difficult to watch but made the movie that much more real. A story of how being at the wrong place and wrong time can permanently alter one's life. Captivated from beginning to end.
OCTB (2017)
Must-Watch Post-Handover Hong Kong Series
A poignant hat tip to pre-handover Hong Kong gangster movies, OctB wins in character development and plot. All the OGs (pun intended) came out for this one. Season One is available on #Netflix now.
This series is reminiscent of all the Hong Kong movies and drama series of the 80s and 90s -- many of which were mimicked and imitated but never duplicated by Hollywood and Korea. Watch to relive the glory of those decades.
