One Piece (2023)
I admit I went in skeptical
I love the anime and the manga. I watched it back in 2006 and then picked it back up again years later.
For the last 4 years, the anime has been a family affair with my 7 year old daughter and husband loving it right along with me. We're caught up and tune in to watch every week.
So, when Netflix of all things announced they were doing a live action my response was: great. Another thing ruined.
Boy was I wrong!!!
We watched the first 4 episodes in one sitting and couldn't get enough. There are, obviously, some things that have changed, but nothing that negatively impacts the story as it is.
The characters are all absolutely fantastic and the acting is just the correct balance of anime flair and real life intrigue.
I really hope Netflix takes the hint and continues with this amazing series, because it's well worth the cost.
If you're looking for something to watch, I definitely suggest a journey to the grand line. This is One Piece (see what I did there?) that you don't want to miss.
Welcome to Earth (2021)
There isn't much I would have changed
There are 2 things I would have liked to see different.
1) I would have liked to see longer episodes. The longest one was 43 minutes and most of that time was spent with introducing the concept of the show and scenes from the next few episodes. The rest of the episodes were somewhere around 35 minutes. I've traveled to 49 states and 6 continents. I know how much there is to see in the world that was missed out on.
2) I would have had more shots where Will Smith wasn't in it. Don't get me wrong...I really like him as an actor and I've met him and liked him as a person. I enjoyed the commentary and can appreciate that the show itself was about him getting out of his comfort zone to explore these things. Let's face it: you can't really comment on adventure from the safety of a studio or a couch. However, while I absolutely enjoyed the concept of the show and the experience aspect of it...there could have been more shots of the nature around him. There could have been more voiceover filled in. In fact, adding these features would have actually fixed my first issue.
I would hope that the beauty and experience aspect of this series isn't lost on people who think all documentaries have to be fly-overs, voiceovers and things eating each other. It's different and that's the beauty of it.
Captain Marvel (2019)
I'll give it a 4 for the 4 good things about it
The stan Lee memorial thing was good.
The cat was good
The 90s nostalgia was good
Nick Fury was good.
I'm a woman and I've been a comic book fan for 26 years. I was honestly really looking forward to this being a good movie. I wanted the negative press to be wrong. It wasn't. There are significantly better ways to spend your money rather than waste it on this.
See Alita: Battle Angel. Better yet buy the manga that movie was based on.
Wait to see Avengers: End Game and hope they make Captain Marvel better, give her less screen time or kill her off.
Go buy some candy and popcorn at the store, snuggle on the couch and watch a movie you've seen 100 times. It'll still surprise you more and have better acting than Captain Marvel.
ReBoot: The Guardian Code (2018)
IT'S NOT REBOOT but IT'S NOT BAD
I grew up watching the original 1994 Reboot. In fact, I still have episodes of it on my computer that I enjoy watching and that my daughter will watch when she's older. So let's just go ahead and say I'm a fan. I was super excited when I saw that Netflix had picked up Reboot. After all, they've done great things with Voltron and Magic School Bus (2 other shows I grew up watching).
Then I saw that it was going to be live action and you can imagine some disappointment that set in. Especially given they've done perfectly fine with animated series like those mentioned above. What was Netflix thinking? Honestly, if they had stuck with what the original Reboot gave them this would be an entirely different review.
The first episode is about as bad as you can get. It's kind of like if you took a 5 year old, showed them Power Rangers and then gave them computer backgrounds to play with. Record all of it, stick it on TV and you've basically got the first episode of this show. I don't dare even call it Reboot. It's like Power Rangers In Cyberspace.
So why the 6 stars rather than just 1?
Because the second episode introduces Megabyte and we see other aspects of Mainframe as well from the original including Dot's Diner. Episode 10 brings back old characters from the original series and in between you've got little throwbacks from the fortress design to the incompetent minions.
So yes, Netflix did bring back some aspects of the Reboot series that we all fell in love with. Combine these small things with the okay acting (they're teenagers so it's about what you'd expect, honestly) and the interesting CGI usage? Well, you've got yourself a show worth watching when you've watched everything else.
Is it Reboot? No.
Does it have potential? Sure. I would be willing to give Netflix another chance to get things right.
