The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018)
It's okay.
The Possession of Hannah Grace doesn't introduce any new ideas or scares to the horror genre, but it is not a bad movie. I expected a ghost movie before watching the movie, but came out feeling I had watched a sort of monster movie because that was exactly how the ghost behaved towards the end.
Despite that, the ghost is reminiscent of Ju-on, and the scares are actually well-done. As with most horror movies, I do not put too much weight on the story and the story is nothing special nor memorable here. The acting is fair.
Nothing really sticks out as bad, and there are very few things to compliment about this movie. It is not a bad film at all, but if you are looking for a quick horror fix or need some quick entertainment, this one will not disappoint.
Oh, I suppose the lead actress is attractive so that is always a plus.
The Nun (2018)
Fair
I live in a relatively small town and I watched this movie fairly late from its initial release date. I was the only person in the cinema. Even so, I wasn't as horrified as I expected to be. It's not a bad horror movie, it entertained me. It fulfilled its purpose for me.
I like my horror to make sense. Unfortunately, the scares in this movie happen for not rhyme or reason, and some scenes borders on disbelief. You will know what I mean if you ever intend to watch it.
Overall, the movie is fair. I watched it at a discounted price so it was worth the money. However, you should not expect an award-winning movie. Oh, and the lead actress is hot.

Amazing Horror Film!
I walked into this one expecting another generically entertaining horror film. Boy, was I wrong! If you are looking to be spooked out of your minds, this one definitely takes the cake!
The movie is about a bunch of young adults who sneak into an abandoned haunted asylum to try and open a deeply haunted room known as Room 402. They do this in order to get a lot of views for their live-stream of proving paranormal activity in the asylum and make a lot of money in the process through ad revenue (typical millennial ambitions). The story wasn't bad, but it was predictable. However, story is not the selling point of horror films in my opinion.
The creep factor was stellar, the direction made near perfect use of the recording/live-stream gimmick, and the sense of dread and mystery kept the audience hooked when things started getting interesting. Furthermore, the jump scares were done in moderation and I was not fed up with it by the end of the movie. That is definitely a plus!
The acting was great. The actors do a good job of portraying silly young adults looking for cheap thrills and excitement.
However, certain scenes were rather pointless or made no sense. The cliched joyful and fun-filled segment making 1/4 of the movie (a strange staple of a lot of Asian horror movies) was a bit too long, and served no purpose to the overall plot. There was also some form of teleportation in the movie which felt like lazy writing, and one scene near the end involving the background of a computer also felt forced and cheap. Furthermore, the direction tried to keep the realism of live-stream gimmick of the movie, so there were parts where the scenes hanged and lagged (to add to the immersion and realism). I found this annoying but this seems to be a matter of taste as I am sure others would appreciate this cinematic touch.
Be that as it may, do not let these minor flaws put you off this amazing horror film. I highly recommend lovers of horror to give this a try! As an avid horror film hobbyist, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this movie. Definitely check this out!
A Quiet Place (2018)
A missed opportunity!
This movie was entertaining, and best of all, it was different. The movie made me realize how important sound is to our lives, and it became intolerable for me about 10 minutes in that most of the movie revolved around the main characters keeping quiet in order to survive. I was just so used to the background music, dialogue and explosion in modern cinema that this movie made me uneasy. This is what made the concept so original and interesting. It definitely kept me intrigued.
This could have been such a great movie, unfortunately it was not executed well enough. The story was just too bland. One of the most touching and emotional scenes in a movie of (probably) the year cannot excuse its extremely slow build-up and poor suspense factor throughout what should be a horror/thriller movie.
However, I cannot praise the acting of ALL the actors well enough. Everyone did a stellar job, especially Millicent Simmonds. Her character was the cause of most of their problems and was extremely unlikable. She was such a great character! She exhibited perfectly the ignorant entitlement of most children. Although, you knew all she needed was to feel loved, you just couldn't feel sorry for Miss Danger Magnet. Let's be honest here, she isn't very good-looking, and this adds to the fact that people are more readily eager to dislike unattractive people. This, I think, is where the casting did an A+ job.
Of course, the biggest twist of all is that the producer, Michael Bay, known for sound effects and explosions, produced a movie in which most of the movie was devoid of sound.
I would recommend a watch. However, do not expect a masterpiece. I think the very high IMDB score makes no sense to me, but to each their own. There is no reason not to watch this movie as it is well worth the price just for its uniqueness alone.
Dukun (2018)
Entertaining!
I was pleasantly surprised that this movie was not bad. It was a fun and entertaining movie. I could not recall any jump scares but the show kept me interested due to its creep factor and mysterious plot.
The story is nothing ground-breaking but it was coherent. I understood what was going on throughout the movie. As cheap entertainment, it did its job.
The movie is not truly a horror movie in my opinion. It is more of a court room drama and a crime mystery with demons added on. I would liken it to the Exorcism of Emily Rose. Although horror does play a major part, it did not feel important. If the movie had kept the paranormal element vague and open-ended, I think the movie would have fared better.
As for the acting, the main character did a great job and her performance was utterly stellar.
So, if anyone wants to give this movie a try, I would recommend it if you have nothing better to do and need a quick movie to spend some time during your leisure. Be that as it may, there are better movies you could watch.
Siembamba (2017)
A Decent Horror Flick!
I don't watch horror movies expecting a great story. I expect to be entertained, disturbed, frightened and disoriented. This movie did all of that.
Without spoiling too much, the main character (Chloe) returns to her hometown, struggling with her own emotions after bearing a baby she does not seem to want initially. she begins to see very strange and horrific things after moving back into her home. This is exacerbated by the presence of her mother (Ruby) and her shrink (Dr. Timothy Reed), whose competence and ethics was questionable throughout the movie.
The cinematography is very well-done. I was not at all disappointed with the way the film was shot. Although, the story does not have to be great in a horror movie, but as with most movies, the story ought not be overly confusing and vague. While watching this film I get the sense that sometimes, the incoherent story was written this way intentionally. Vagueness and open-endedness is great for a horror movie, but I felt that it was not executed smoothly in this one.
The actors did an excellent job, especially Reine Swart (Chloe) and Brandon Auret (Timothy Reed). The only black spot was Adam Hess, who played Chloe's love interest. He was dull and uninteresting throughout the entire movie and seemed to serve no relevant purpose. Chloe does an excellent job portraying a disturbed and distraught new mother. The supporting characters all seemed to have their own agendas, and trying to find out what those agendas were, kept me interested up until the end. As for Chloe, the movie kept me thinking whether she was hallucinating, or whether she was experiencing something paranormal (or even both at different times).
In the end, I would recommend giving this movie a watch if one has time to spare. The movie kept me uncomfortable and curious throughout the entirety of the movie up until the ending, which is what you want in a horror flick. The final scene caused me shock (in a good way) but unsatisfied due to how the story unfolded towards the end. Most of the characters had a lot of layers, and the intentions of the supporting characters were unclear even until the end if one does not do a bit of thinking of their own. Be warned, this movie contains some disturbing gore.
This was not a forgettable movie in the slightest. In fact, some scenes will haunt your memories for days to come. However, due to the unsatisfying ending and the overly confusing nature of the plot, it keeps me from giving it anything higher than a 6 out of 10, which makes this a passably entertaining, yet unfortunately flawed film.
