Till Death (2021)
Not AMAZING, not TRASH.
Why is everything divided into either SUCKS or AWESOME these days? It's not a 10 and definitely not a 1. Despite the other reviews, I've seen a lot worse than this. EVERY horror movie has its "No way that could happen" moments. Was better than 70% of the stuff Netflix drops every week. If you don't have anything to watch, it has some suspense and some laughs.
Untitled Horror Movie (2021)
Meta!
Meta: they say it multiple times in the movie. The low score must be from tightly puckered horror fans angry that it got tagged as a "horror" and not a "comedy-horror." It is not a horror.... it is a comedy with a few horror elements (most of which are, appropriately not scary at all). I especially loved the irony of the clearly intentional dialogue juxtaposed against the characters' complete obliviousness. Very self aware, great horror "stereotype" characters, fun over the top winks at found footage films ("Can you stop shaking the camera, please? You're making me nauseous!"), and the "clever and original" writing is more cliche than the initial drivel the actors didn't want to film in the first place. Kudos to this Covid film! I belly laughed multiple times.... a very fun accidental find on a Wednesday afternoon :)
Scream: The Man Behind the Mask (2019)
Teleportation is a thing?
Mindless good fun... BUT for those paying attention....
Elliot, Liv and Amir leave Beth, Kym, and Manny at the gas station and drive long enough to get to the junkyard so that day changes to night.
Kym drives off in the car (the opposite direction that the first group went after dark), 10 or 15 minutes later the rednecks race by, and they all end up in a cornfield.
After seeing the rednecks drive by, Manny and Beth manage to run fast enough to cover the distance to that cornfield... or teleport. (Yes, I know there was a flat tire, but Kym was still driving WAY faster than they could run).
Amir somehow manages to get from the faraway junkyard to the cornfield he somehow knows they're randomly in (by... teleporting? He didn't have the car because Elliot and Liv drive up in it later)
And Ghostface is simultaneously in the junkyard and the random cornfield.
TELEPORTATION!!!!
Laxmii (2020)
You'll laugh AT the movie, not WITH it.
I dunno what this is, but it is NOT SCARY unless you consider blatant, total awfulness scary. I considered it HILARIOUS.
Get a pizza, some friends, alcohol, and some shot glasses. Drink every time there is a horror trope. Or music video (see below). Or someone makes a completely inappropriate facial expression for the situation. Or every time the uncle (???... idk what he was) screams like a 3 year old.
The parts that were supposed to be scary were AMAZING.... the SFX throughout the film look like it was done by high school kids on Tik Tok. It's not cheese or camp... they were clearly TRYING to be scary.
I think there are parts that are supposed to be funny... and I laughed, but probably not for the reasons the director wanted me to.
The parts that were supposed to be normal were just... odd (so they were funny).
Everything about this movie was STUPID.
Even before it starts there are intro graphics for about 37 companies who contributed to the production... lol
Why are there THREE DIFFERENT opening credits scenes? You get opening credits 15 MINUTES into the film after some random Vegas pool party music video.
WHY ARE THERE RANDOM MUSIC VIDEOS THROUGHOUT A HORROR MOVIE???
I dont know... but they're great(as in awful) and the first one at the pool party is just... well, you have to see it. For a country with a billion people, you'd think they could at least find attractive ones for the pool video... comedy gold! Maybe the director just used his friends.
Watch it with or without the subtitles. It doesn't really matter. I switched back and forth and it was funny either way.
Reading reviews, it seems people in India almost universally hate this for a number of probably justifiable cultural reasons, but since I'm not Indian or well versed in the culture clash there, it was just laughable stupid idiocy for the first 1:35... then it takes this weird transgender turn that comes out of left field.
Then I got mad at the movie. I'm not sure if it was TRYING to be protrans or just transphobic, but they used every trans-stereotype that rednecks in an Alabama bar would use to describe a trans person.
And then turned her into SUPER-trans... like a trans person bitten by a radioactive Jean Claude Van Damme who then, after being murdered, becomes ghost-trans-Van-Damme who takes revenge on her killers at a random 10,000 participant trans-only beach party (after a music video, of course). It was gloriously awful, so bad that I still wanted to laugh, but I was mad that the terrible quality and portrayal made me want to laugh at what is a real issue of concern.
Bottom line: it is NOT good. You will laugh AT the movie, not with it.
