Bosch: Legacy: The Wrong Side of Goodbye (2022)
Run for your life
Convincingly picks up where Bosch left off. Maintains the same tone, style and rhythm. Pretty good overall. However...
I love Maddie, but she needs to learn how to run, otherwise chasing criminals just looks ridiculous. She couldn't outrun a six year old like that.
Close (2019)
Good start but falls apart
Starts well and the action sequences are very good, but it comes apart in the middle with poor writing and a plot that gets increasingly silly, implausible and boring. Acting is perfunctory apart from Olivia Jewson, who is very good.
Wind River (2017)
Compelling, taut mystery thriller
An interesting idea beautifully executed. The setting is vivid and atmospheric - you can feel the cold in your bones. The pacing and structure are very well judged. Renner, Olsen and Greene are likeable protagonists. A satisfying conclusion. Highly recommended for a Saturday night in.
Anomalisa (2015)
Heart sinks for ninety minutes
Firstly, the animation is excellent and conveys the ideas of the film very well. However, the problem with a film conveying a life that is empty, tedious and annoying is that the film can become empty, tedious and annoying, which is the case here. Another problem is that we are meant to sympathise with the main protagonist, who is unrelentingly dull, self- absorbed and dismissive of everyone else. Personally I felt like kicking him not sympathising with him.
This could have been mitigated by humour. There was a good joke in the the first two minutes. Unfortunately that was the only joke.
In truth I'm surprised at all the positive reviews. If I got the chance to live my life again one of the things I would make a point of doing the second time around would be to not see this film.
Stargate Universe (2009)
Deep Space Whine
So far SGU has consisted of a group of bland or annoying people wandering round an aimless gloomy space bickering with each other. A shame because this is a fine idea with great potential. The writers don't seem interested in developing the characters or exploring the secrets of the ship. They seem to have run out of ideas, which, considering how early we are in the series, is remarkable. There is no excitement, no intrigue, no tension. The script just goes round and round in increasingly annoying circles. I heard Robert Carlyle in an interview say that he thought this was his best work. I don't think so Robert - unless Trainspotting starred some other Robert Carlyle.
