New Tricks: Nine Lives (2007)
Esther!
This show makes me laugh out loud. Sometimes I feel guilty because they are investigating murders. My favorite character is Esther, Brian's wife. She is so understated and a perfect foil to his craziness.
I was bothered this episode by the lack of continuity with a previous episode. When Brian is gifted his new dog, Scampi, the dog is obviously a terrier. In this episode he is a spaniel. I know it's easy to notice these things when binge-watching, but the job of a show runner is to make sure it doesn't happen.
Otherwise, the show is perfect.
Madam Secretary: Family Separation: Part 1 (2018)
Breaking Point
Very sad to say goodbye to this show. This episode was so blatantly bigoted (yes, bigotry swings both ways) that I had to give up. I have lived in Arizona for over 50 years and can honestly say I have never seen such a poor representation of the people of this state. We do not talk like hicks, wear poorly shaped cowboy hats or fear brown people. There is room for political disagreement, but not for the demonization of those who hold different opinions. And the absolute biggest misrepresentation was that the ninth circuit would not issue an injunction against the "law". I expect a modicum of reality in my TV viewing unless I am watching fantasy.
Bull: The Ground Beneath Their Feet (2018)
No smooth transition
There were so many gaps from last season that had to be shoved into this episode that it was very disjointed. Bull is fully recovered from a massive heart attack and alcohol addiction; Marissa is married (where did that come from and why); Cable is missing; the team lost 2 cases. Wow.
Regardless of the poor transition, I feel I must make a comment on how trials are portrayed. Many cases are framed as this is the law, but we need to make the jury feel bad for the client. In criminal trials, the jury's duty is to determine if the law was broken, not if the defendant had good reasons. That is all that matters, and the judge would instruct the jury to heed that duty. Stop with the judicial activism.
In this case, it was a civil trial, so anything goes. But, was it the insurance company's fault the patient was injured during treatment? No. In fact, they had probably paid exorbitant amounts for her treatment already. Why was the insurance company's case the one to get to trial so quickly? If everyone felt so bad, why didn't the hospital, equipment manufacturers and doctors offer settlement? Because the big, bad insurance company is an easy target. Lazy writing.
And finally, will we ever find out if she was able to get a liver in time? Doubtful she would even make it to the top of the list due to her poor health. Was she a candidate for a living donor (partial liver) transplant. Again, lazy writing, and lack of research.
I'm still sad Michael Weatherly left NCIS, and the more I see of this show - for which I had high hopes - the sadder I get.
Madam Secretary: E Pluribus Unum (2018)
Guess they couldn't get Condi.
I really liked this show - especially the 1st 2 seasons. Now, like most entertainment, we get our weekly dose of "this is how you should view the world". When the last episode ended with Elizabeth announcing she was going to run for president and Henry responding "I'm with you" as in I'm with her, I knew what we would be in for. I know this is a political show, but must it hit the viewer over the head with the Hollywood version of what is good and right?
NCIS: New Orleans: See You Soon (2018)
I would give it zero stars. An hour I'll never get back.
I am very tired of trained officers who empty a gun at close range and can't hit the target. And who does CPR with the head elevated? Good grief. I won't even get into the writing.
Blue Bloods: Legacy (2018)
So bad I had to write a review
This episode try to deal with far too many social issues and therefore didn't deal with any of them well. First, Danny would not be suffering the severe financial impact of Linda's death. She was killed on the job would've had Worker's Compensation probably life insurance and he and the boys would be collecting Social Security. Also she only recently went back to work. Next was the weird racial profiling/illegal immigrants story. I'm not even sure what they were trying to accomplish except confusion. Why would Frank Reagan decide to fire an officer after he determined she was well liked, a good officer with a good record and after he used her to help calm the prisoner down? Not only out of character but very disjointed. And The sexual-harassment story was also undeveloped. One of the other female employees told Nikki the boss was basically a good guy but he wasn't part of the solution. Then he turns out to be a ringleader of harassment. I'm very saddened by this episode.
