Halloween Ends (2022)
Refreshingly different
This is not your average Halloween sequel and that's what I loved most about it. Definitely my favorite of the Danny McBride trilogy, absolutely one of my favorites of the entire franchise. It's got a very 80s vibe to it and feels like a Freddy or Jason movie more than a Halloween. That may bother you if you are a purist. 'Halloween Kills' this is NOT. I don't want to spoil it as it is opening weekend as of this being written... I recommend just going in blind and not reading what the story exactly is, just that it is very different and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Jamie Lee Curtis is great as usual and the grand daughter character really comes into her own spotlight in a highly enjoyable way. This was great. I see a lot of complaints I don't personally agree with. But everyone has their own unique expectations I guess.
Hellraiser (2022)
PRETTY DAMN GOOD!
Let me start by clarifying that besides this movie I have only ever seen the original Hellraiser and have never read the book. This is definitely not a remake, it's more of a completely new beginning and an entirely different story so if you have never seen any of the other movies you won't be lost at all. If I had to compare it to a non-Hellraiser movie that I HAVE seen I would say it kind of reminded me of 13 GHOSTS. It starts out slow but it spends time fleshing out the main characters and the atmosphere and story, which is kind of refreshing these days. I can't say I "cared" about all the characters but some of them kind of and that's definitely a step in the right direction when it comes to upping the tension and having an impact. The make-up effects on this are Academy Award worthy and besides the flying chains I noticed little to no CGI. Pin-Head and Co are back in all their gory glory and the new cenobite friends they bring along are a true sight to behold. If you are on the fence about watching this take off your shirt and let the fence metal rip all your back flesh off! That's the Hellraiser way!
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers (2021)
Like a castrated Cobra Kai
It only gets 6 stars because it brings Emilio Estevez out of retirement and he literally carries the entire show. There is absolutely too much woke trash and checklist pandering. But its Disney so I already knew/expected this going in. Everybody gets a participation trophy I guess! The kids are alright... I guess... semi likeable if not for their personalities being overly exaggerated caricatures of what Disney executives THINK kids these days are really like. I really found it difficult to get through a few episides, I was about to stop watching entirely when they threw in some gratuitous cameos that pulled me back from the brink. The episodes themselves are simultaneously too short and mostly filler. This could have VERY EFFECTIVELY been edited down into a decent DISNEY+ exclusive movie. Shame really. I dint expect a season 2 and have yet to hear any news or INTEREST in one.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul (2017)
Not nearly as awful as I expected.
I did go in with very low expectations, having read several negative reviews on here and knowing about the entire new cast. I'm a huge Steve Zahn fan and the dad on the new one has none of that zany energy and wackiness, I think that's definitely my biggest complaint. Alicia Silverstone plays the mom perfectly. Greg is tolerable and even Roddrick grew on me after I got used to the new actor. None of them are as great as the original cast but they aren't nearly as terrible as I was dreading. The humor and vibe of the movie itself fits right into the Steve Zahn trilogy and except for having cellphones this could easily fit in as a prequel of sorts. I laughed quite a few times and it kept my attention. As a 40 year old father of 3 boys I can relate strongly to much of what goes on in these movies. If you love the first 3 and you are on the fence about this one, give it a chance it's not that awful.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Major potential wasted
What a sad unfortunate slap in the face this movie was. Everything was there for it to be great. I think it could even be easily edited into greatness with a directors cut. Too much humor, unfunny cheesy humor. Hamfisted woke messaging shoved down the viewers throat. Korg has two dads, Heimdall's daughter is a boy now... Changed his name from Astrid which is a traditional female name that means divinely beautiful to Axl. If that wasn't intentional, that's certainly what it came across as. Also Valkyrie made several loud hints to her attraction to the ladies. None of this would matter or be a problem if it felt organic and not like the producers forced it all into the movie at gunpoint. Dint get me started on poor Christian Bale. He gave this movie his all and they sharted in his face. I'm about done with the MCU. On a scale from 1 to 10. NO WAY HOME being a 10, this would be a 4 at best. I'd give it a 2 if not for Christian Bale. He gets a 10. I doubt he will ever work with Disney again after this.
Heroes of Goo Jit Zu (2019)
Mildly Entertaining kids show
This is a pretty simple premise, it was basically made just to sell more Goo Jitsu action figures to children aka get them to drive mom and dad up the wall until they snap. Available now at every Target and Walmart on earth, not sure if these are from the creator of Stretch Armstrong but its the same idea as THAT and TMNT. Zoo animals exposed to OOZE "goo" MUTATE into Teenage Ninjas. (Goo jitsu) I watched it on Netflix with my 3 and 1/2 year old son, I guess there are only 7 episodes. Season 1? Is this show a hit? My kid seems to think so, he's watched the entire thing through 47 times. The episodes are really short and they build on eachother so there is a continuity. I only looked on here to see how many episodes there are, hoping there are more, for the sake of my own sanity, and to learn a bit more about the show and there were no reviews yet, so I thought, Hey! Why not fill the void since I watched it 12 times and am sort of an expert by now.
