Maid (2021)
I cried at the end.
Where do I begin? Well, my day started with seeking for grants and loans. I needed to comb my hair and chose to watch something on Netflix. I came across MAID for the first time, and see a woman of color on the post image caught my attention.
I began watching, not sure of what to expect.
Then we see Alex fleeing in the middle of the night. This action trails into a story that had me glued to my seat. Not becasue it entertained me, but because it spoke to my reality. It underlined how broken the system is and if not for Alex resilience to live for not only herself, she probably wouldnt not make it out.
MAID is a beautiful masterpiece of creative design.
I felt the anger, tears and inspiration. I also love how they drew the lines of classim but also blurred it between Alex and Reginas character.
One literally has the money to get whatever she wants, but cannot use it to get what she really wants. She can't use it to save her marriage.
While Alex a maid on the run for her life and struggling to run, has the pain and beauty of motherhood. She goes from pillar to post trying to earn a honest living for herself. She has to fight to leave an EXTREMELY TOXIC relationship. I greatly appreciate how this narrative speaks to youths about the choices they make and how it can alter their life not for the better.
What I really love is how the show captures the judgemental, pathetic, patronizing stares of other characters that Alex encounters.
Yolanda's character also rubs me. It shows how we all can be fighting to make a buck but could give two rats ass about the difficulty of others. She is operating a business but its not about what she can do for others, afterall she demands loyalty. But its about her making that money, and who cares if persons like Alex has to cut off her nose to spite her face.
Then there is Alex parents. Her father and mother are both pieces of work pun intended.
Both have miserably failed Alex in so many ways. Among the many scenerios that rubbed me, I love how the show gradually shows Alex breaking free from a generation of toxicity.
I also love that they cut Nate off to emphasize a woman doesn't nessecarily need a man to be her hero.
All.in all MAID is a series that touches on quite a few themes stemming from domestic violence, hidden to visible poverty, and generational issues. And like one reviewer puts it. Hardwork doesnt always gurantee a way out of poverty, but the will to live for oneself and the people we love does.
Wonderful. If you havent watched MAID yet, do so. Im not a fan of swearing. It rubs me raw but for some reason it had me cursing along with Alex for the messed up situations she experienced.
Really Love (2020)
Truly a work of art.
I enjoyed the pull of this story and the way it said what needed to be said without saying it. I appreciate how there was no product placement but the heart of the matter.
Its a love story of boy meets girl. But the water gets murky when reality, the possiblity of love and life opportunity become end or be all choices.
The boy is focused on building a legacy while the girl is unsure of hers. The former has no other alternative but to make his passions work for him. While the girl has her house and parents should her career go south.
I feel the theme of this movie points to love being that lifetime opportunity versus the fast pace of life. But life is love and love is an art and takes a brilliant mind and vulnerable heart to capture it.
Favorite Son (2021)
The pacing was too fast amongst other things.
The premise of this movie was catching, and I enjoyed the setup. However, the pacing sorta threw me off. It felt rushed. I dont mind if a movie is 2 hours considering its okay to do.
I still felt I was giving introductory information. By the time we were to understand the characters, scenes and other parts, the movie ends.
I really disliked how the pastors character didnt have enough backstory to give us reasons for his treatment towards his sons. It is evident he had issues from unfulfilled dreams and other things.
Some of the acting felt cookie cutter its like okay that is expected and predictable.
Overall I enjoyed watching the movie and I just wish they would take their time and not rush it.
For Anthony Evans character "Royce" in the beginning, I felt it was the same person...Anthony.
But when we get further into it I feel Royce.
