Yonggary (1999)
Old school kaiju awesome
This has the feel of an old school monster flick of the late 60s; a mix of the american style with the supposed lunatic scientist who holds all the secrets and the japanese style of over the top monster action and ludacris sci-fi technology employed against the creature...
The human characters serve their purpose of basically explaining the what and how of all that is going on... setting up the release of the monster and then stepping back to be canon fodder...
The destruction mambo uses a mix of computer stuff and miniature; the mini stuff looks really good, not just for low budget even, like anything from the Heisei era Godzilla films which is impressive... practical explosions used and even some parts of the monster are real...
The computer stuff is what will turn people off; most reviews site this as why they hated the movie... it doesn't look great but I don't care, the dedication to old school monster flick tone makes this a win for me...
As an older fan of kaiju or monster film I loved this film and would recommend you buy it...
Pandamonium (2020)
Slasher comedy that became an instant favorite!
The office men in this film are wild caricatures of the stereotypical misogynist office worker, and I don't like them... not even a bit, but we really aren't supposed to...
The film is much more of a comedy than expected; I know, I know, killer in a panda mask and you expect big drama and such? Well we do get a surprisingly emotional performance from Arielle, one scene near the middle and she really sells it... give this girl some type of award because she earned it...
Loved the Panda killer too; he's not the silent antagonist of typical slasher films, and this is far beyond the typical slasher film... he always has a "dad joke" level quip for his kills and I will not apologize for loving it
This may be the best film from this studio I have seen yet and you should buy it...
For We Are Many (2019)
Horror Anthology From Around The World
Being a collection of works from many varied filmmakers gives us a film with many varied styles; most work for me, few do not... short stories often feel like someone just clipped the climax of a feature length film and showed me just that part, which feels unfulfilling... there are some, more than half of these, that I would love to see fleshed out into a full length film... some of the chapters go by very quick too; like the demon boys eating the homeless guy, I don't even think it was 2 or 3 minutes... many have gore and blood, few have jump scares, a couple are outright unnerving; there's a ghostly moan in one (no spoilers) that I could have gone all my life without hearing, but it's in my nightmares now...
These would be just a taste of what the filmmakers can do, and it is worth watching...
Muerte: Tales of Horror (2018)
As unique an experience you will find in the independent film world...
First thing I notice is a splendid use of blood and gore; like really good job on the make up with the vampires and Cucuy, but also they choose not to linger on the gore and instead give you a quick look at it and then moving on...
But this isn't to cover up any faults, pause the film and look deep into the blood and you'll see they did a phenomenal job...
I wouldn't say top tier acting but I have certainly seen a lot worse, no really, they did a stand out job here, don't think any of these are professionals but with a little spit and polish they easily could be...
The entire premise; the over arching story and the shorts are very unique, my favorite is the cyborg versus vampires tale, hell I would watch that as a feature length movie... But also how it all ends up really being the same story, all connected, I liked that...
