Chained (2012)
An Unexpected Surprise
Without giving away any spoilers, this movie was surprisingly way better than I anticipated and didn't play out the way I expected at all. It also wasn't the typical Hollywood ending where everything wraps up tidy--It has that lingering taste that a pure sci-fi movie leaves you with.
I rated it a 10 because I can't think of any part of the movie that needed changing. The acting was amazing from all the cast. The crew on this movie did a great job.
I don't understand why so many people didn't like it...maybe because it focused on the characters and their stories and not hollywood action?
Try it and see.
Inside Man (2022)
Well worth a watch
Many claimed the plot was unbelievable, but had this been a slapstick comedy then nobody would have called the plot out. The plot places the characters into situations where you see human nature play out into a comedy of errors. The characters have to question their own morals and weigh between what is right, and what is right for the ones they care about. If you can get past the absurdity of some of the situations then this is a great dark comedy watch. Great acting by all cast. Funny by the irony of situations, and funny scenes at the prison - where they are absolutely stolen by Atkins E. As the fellow prisoner.
Stutz (2022)
A wonderful film with some teaching tools too
This is a great film to watch for how beautifully it was filmed, but also the razzing and comradery shown between Jonah and his therapist. It is truly a tribute to their friendship, respect, and love for each other.
There are some interesting tools presented in the film for dealing with life. I think for people who struggle with life there may be good tools illustrated here that they could explore on their own, or with their therapist. Stutz distills them down into very easy to comprehend concepts. Personally I don't struggle, and everyone has always commented how I'm just OK every day, and how I can get through tough things easily. Watching this film made me realize that these are the exact internal tools I have used my whole life; they either came naturally, or via personal growth through struggles. So I see this film as documenting tools that actually do work, and that it is not that some people are strong and some are weak, it is more that some people have innate coping skills, and some people need them described in a way they can digest.
One Day in the Life of Noah Piugattuk (2019)
Humour and sadness
A great film best described by others on here. Illustrates how out of touch the whiteman was.
Prospect (2018)
Firefly-esque tale
This is an underated sci-fi film, which is probably because the masses think sci-fi is Starwars/Disney drivel.
This film is reminiscent of the Firefly series in someway.
Spoiler below.
But mainly it's a story of how a young girl's father turns out to be less of a father figure than the man she meets. While the girl and her father spend every moment together, you see that he is an absent father figure distracted by his goals and later greed.
It's less a story about finding gems, but more a story about a young girl finding someone more attentive, and looking out for her well being, better than her actual parent.
This story could be told without the sci-fi element, and I think that's why it's a good sci-fi film; it has real human interaction and plight, rather than lasers and explosions.
IO (2019)
Not worth it
This looked promising, but quickly became a chore to endure. I love non main-stream sci-fi. But did not find much in this movie.
The actors' dialog seemed horribly forced and fake.; like they are reading from a teleprompter.
If you want a slow moving sci-fi but with good acting and an actual story, then skip this and watch Prospect (2018) instead.
Freaks (2018)
10 for the ride
I'd give this a ten because I really enjoyed it, but dropped it to a 9 as I think there is slight room for improvement. It's best to watch this moving knowing nothing about it, and it will lead you on a journey of second guessing yourself.
The young girl is an amazing actress.
The movie meanders through various film genres. Many of the negative reviews comment about the weird characters, but if you imagine it from the girls point of view, and how surreal her life would be it makes sense.
I'm not100% a fan of the ending. I think the rest of the movie was so well done that they could have taken this in another direction.
It also seemed many reviewers thought they were going to see an X-men film. It is not that type of movie, it is better, just in a different way.
Tales from the Loop (2020)
An excellent portraying of Simon Stålenhag's art
I stumbled across Simon Stålenhag's books for sale, while searching for Jakub Rozalski's art. Simon's paintings have an effect of capturing odd nostalgia for a time that hasnt existed. There is a beautiful peacefulness to the juxtaposition of tech and retro aesthetics. The Amazon series has captured this quite well, with the cinematographic shots framing the universe Simon created, and the slow calm transition of scenes. The high-tech background relics blend into everyones daily norm, while still leaving room for chilhood exploration and wonder.
This is a series to be explored for its story telling and beauty. Some viewers may find it slow as it is not overdone like modern movies and television; To those I say relax, have a warm tea and enjoy the experience.
Orange Is the New Black (2013)
Season 1 had promise, now it is nonsense
Season 1 had some great characters and the story was sucking me in. But as it went on it just became unbelievable nonsense the latest season is about absolutely nothing, combined with terrible acting. Skip this, and start Wentworth instead. Solid story with a plot all through each season, great acting. You will thank me
