Weather Report (2005)
I try not to miss this!
I spend my mornings at work doing the data-entry for all orders from the day before. This can be tedious, indeed, but the one saving moment comes with the local weather report. Yes, every weekday morning on the local NPR afiliate, I listen for the great David Lynch giving the local Los Angeles weather. He does it with enthiasm, but with all required professionalism.
It's been hard working from home but David's voice still kkeps me going.
Spoiler alert; It'll probably be sunny...
Molly's Game (2017)
The Pithy Banter was exhausting!
If you know know Aaron Sorkin, you'd know he wrote this early on. I normally love the cadence of his words and the smart as all get out word play. I never thought it would work to the detriment of his work, but in Molly's Game it did.
I kept getting the feeling that he just saw 'Goodfella's' and wanted to duplicate it. His failing was in trying to outdo it. The Pithy Banter of the narration, one of the most fun parts of Goodfella's was so overdone here that I had to stop the DVD in mid-play to write this. Mr. Sorkin is an unrivaled talent, and I will always give his work deference, but in this case I think he needs to reel it back. This film presses the 'Enough Already' but about halfway in and I'm a little saddened that I didn't want to watch it further.
Westworld (2016)
It was the Best of Shows, it was the Worst of shows....
Sometimes I think these TV shows should not be rated in their entirety, but rated by the season. This show, Westworld was amazing if not a bit to ponderous in its first season. I can easily just a rating of at least 8 and would accept even a 10.
This is not the first show, or story, that explored the Ethics of Science, the meaning of self and identity, and ponder the rights of the individual. What makes one an individual sentient being, and therefore have the right of Life, Liberty, Freedom and happiness? Descartes pondered this and the best he came up with was 'Cogito, Ergo Sum'..... I Think, Therefore I Am. From Isaac Asimov to Gene Roddenberry, this has been a central theme. Did HAL9000 really kill almost everyone on The Discovery because he didn't like to tell lies? Is the human mind simply an organic computer?
But Season 2 drops, I find it virtually unwatchable. I simply cannot follow it. I have a sense of what is going on, hints of it pop out here and there but it has been all over the map with no clear lines to understand. I skipped watching last weeks episode and not sure if I will try to catch up.... it feels like work trying to sit through any further episodes. It's like the feeling I get walking up a steep hill and trying to decide if getting to the top is worth the effort.
SEASON 1 rating 8/10
Season 2 rating 2/10
Series comes out to 5/10
American Crime Story (2016)
The Assassination Of Gianni Versace, Season 2...
I thought I'd wait for the final episode but I can no longer wait. This season has much good and fascinating aspects but lacks a coherent thread to pull it together. Fundamentally this is the story of a spree killer who murders Gianni Versace. This is not a spoiler unless you think the title of the series is in itself a spoiler. I'm saddened mostly by the sympathetic portrayal of Versace, who fairs well as portrayed except that he speaks more with a spanish accent than an Italian one. Same goes for Donnatella Versace, though she has more of an edge to her.
The killer, Andrew Cunanon, is a serial liar and confabulator on level even worse, if possible than our Idiot President. But coming into the final episode, he's being treated as a possible victim of both his father and mother. But truthfully, there is little ties ties the victim to his killer. We're left guessing what is true and what isn't. Truth as always has to be in between.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Beautifully Written.
Perhaps the only flaw this movie has is that it may be a bit over-the-top sentimental, but that is the charm of it as well. I enjoy that we can see the good in these people who were always good. It gives us hope that we are all redeemable. Stephen King is a better writer with this type of story. Some of his horror falls into stereotypes.
