When you are gone (2021)
Transparent and wooden
Main character was definitely the best performance but there were times when even he was a bit stiff. His boss was one of the worst actors I've ever witnessed - seriously cringe.
The plot was absolutely transparent. The main character has no money to make partner of the architect firm but then suddenly he's got money after wife's ransom payout. Ooo maybe he had something to do with it! He witnesses her being murdered on screen after paying the ransom but he keeps seeing her everywhere. The whole plot would have been better without that aspect of visions of his wife in terrible walking dead corpse make-up. The whole thing was also very slow with very few things going on at all.
The fact that he suddenly had enough money to make partner at his firm after a ransom payout and apparent murder of his wife didn't seem to trigger any source of funds investigation by the police who suspected him of murdering his wife anyway. The detectives accent and drawl was something to laugh about at least though!
There was no real explanation of why the other work colleague and his entire family had to die for the "dead" wife to get her revenge on her husband for setting her up as a kidnap victim even though she knew by making her own deal with the kidnappers that she wasn't supposed to get harmed. Using the other family as leverage for him to top himself didn't stack up at all. As she wasn't supposed to be killed herself anyway she actually had little to be annoyed about.
The scene near the end where he makes a recording of his wife admitting her entire plot and then hands it to her is bizarre.
Top Dog (2020)
One of the best crime dramas
Great multiple stories going on at the same time, decent drama, excellent acting. The deaths are on par with GOT; Could be anyone next. Acting produced no stupid inane shallow characters just some irritating ones through a good portrayal and direction. Characters are realistic and believable.
I enjoyed this as much as The Bridge, though the stories aren't as convoluted and involving but there's a depth to more characters here.
Some things people have complained about have to be speeded up for coherence eg do downvoters really think they'll string a job application out to months?
It's been left with enough for a 3rd series but has ended well. Was so glad the 2nd series was made to conclude the problem with mother.
The Surprise Visit (2022)
Just dreadful
Very little makes sense in this movie. Posh house owner employs Eric Roberts as a handyman gardener and Roberts son is a smack head.
The best bit was the posh house owner shouting to Roberts "I'm ready to go to the airport". Roberts attends to her and you are expecting him to drive her but all he does is open and close the car door for her to drive off. Sure hope she can manage to exit the car at the airport.
The daughter and son in law (who are the surprise visit) do all the most unpredictable things when Roberts' son Casey breaks in.
The daughter who was brought up at the house and knows the woods and property we'll seemed he bent on getting lost, taking the long way, putting herself in danger repeatedly. It was quite a relief when she got shot.
The Requin (2022)
Deary me.
Not enough time spent investing you in the characters at all. Started out like it could be another Dead Calm or The Impossible but that was soon lost within 5 minutes. All of it seemed to possibly be the most contrived unlikely thing that could happen. Alicia shrieks all the way through. Terrible CGI. Scenes that just don't match up at all like the beach house that floats away was unlikely enough but at stupid angles from the outside at 30degrees yet inside there's no water and appears ok. Alicia kills sharks with a piece of wood, yeah right. The end when the fog clears to realise she's near land just seems like they couldn't think of how to finish it. I saw the rating and thought it can't be that bad but it truly was.
Saints and Soldiers (2003)
Tedious, uneventful, very poor acting
I've only recently, as I've got older, started to appreciate war movies. This is just a war crime followed by very shallow characters trudging through the woods annoying each other. Amazingly they appear not to bond at all even living through what one would expect to have been a very harrowing experience. Although shallow, some are deep enough to be truly unlikable. Considering this is based on true events it surely is diabolically slow and uneventful. If the energy that was put into making scenes that should have been suspenseful utterly boring and mundane was used to achieve the expected outcome of knife edge suspense, it might have had something to remember but alas no. No idea how people have rated this so high.
The Assistant (2019)
Tedious and uneventful
Dear me. Nothing at all happens in this. The acting is great but the script is just a totally pointless long drawn out tale that has absolutely no outcome at all.
Ad Astra (2019)
Long and boring
Acting is fine. Story is pointless. Thankfully baboons add a little excitement. Not sure what else to say but avoid this unless you just want the equivalent of easy listening while knocking back a glass of wine... Make that a bottle.
Lucy in the Sky (2019)
What a very long boring film
I didnt realise until too late that the "mind blowing" event in space that triggers NPortman's existential crisis had already happened at the start. I've had more exciting naps. Nothing happens in this movie at any point whatsoever. Plus point is as a minimum there are at least four great actors are all characters are well portrayed.
The Void (2016)
Particularly boring
Relies on gore and supernatural creatures for entertainment. No likeable characters. No storyline to keep you entertained. Focus of story moved too many times to maintain any interest.
Becky (2020)
Home alone on steroids
Loved this. A decent movie with most actors unknown to me except KJ. Sure there are daft bits but becky went from annoying brat to awesome pretty quick.
Mandy (2018)
Tiresome
An utterly dreadful score makes this abysmal movie even more unenjoyable.
A cast of of characters that range from bland unlikable to just simply dull.
A story with zero depth.
Babylon A.D. (2008)
Great action, set and actors but lacking elsewhere.
Not much story to this. Had the possibility to have a much more interesting ending. It was just that it appears the writer lost all interest. Most unlikely twins in history, I guess that was supposed to be entertaining.
