The Terminator (1984)
30 years later and it's just as good
This is a classic and must be preserved in the Hollywood library forever. This was made by a unknown writer and director who was sleeping in his car, he had the fever and after that he wrote this and when filming, had to shoot scenes without the proper paperwork. Great film and definitely worth a watch.
Wake Up (2019)
Nothing that hasn't been done before
This is just a generic who done it film which we've all seen a million times before. Nothing great, nothing surprising.
The stand out thing about this movie is the acting...it's horrendous and I really do mean that. Clint Eastwood's daughter plays the co-star role and she is terrible, a chip off the old block. All of the actors were terrible so in that sense, she fit in well.
The Seventh Day (2021)
This was written in 10 days and it showed
Guy Pearce was the reason I watched this in the first place. Great actor, normally but this was garbage. All the characters were dull, especially father Daniel. The boy's acting wasn't great either. The voice over effect were just laughable and the story line was so bad, I can't really remember what it was. The twist was obvious, the film wasn't scary and there was zero suspense. Apparently this was written in 10 days...they must've rewrote it 3 times coz it seems like someone jotted it down on toilet paper whilst taking a dump.
Thunder Force (2021)
Fell flat everywhere
I thought I'd give it a try as I love all sorts of superhero films but this fell flat. It's wasn't that funny, the powers weren't very good, characters were pretty boring and the whole thing didn't work. Melissa McCarthy was the exact same as in all of her other films so if you like that, you might like this. I didn't think too much of this.
The Dry (2020)
Don't read till after you watch the film
This was a very slow film that slowly burns. The ending is left open as we find out who the killer of the teenage girl is. It's turned out it was her dad because she was running away and he was an abusive father. It ended with Bana looking sad that no justice will be done as her dad is an old man with dementia and probably doesn't remember doing it. The town wouldn't want him making those sort of accusations against a grieving old man as they wouldn't believe him. It's left with him walking away, sad that she died trying to escape her abusive dad and he didn't know.
Goon: Last of the Enforcers (2017)
This is a comedy?
This is not a funny film by any means.
Avoid this if you want to laugh.
Crawl (2019)
Decent but not great
This was a decent film about crocs and a hot young girl.
We all know how it's gunna play out so no surprises there.
It's cliche at times and a bit daft when it comes to her swimming through alligator infested waters. They always seem to snap just as she gets out of the way.
Hugely predictable but if you like these sorts of film, you'll probably enjoy it.
It Follows (2014)
Not good, not bad either
This wasn't the greatest film I've ever seen but it's still worth a watch.
It's quite slow paced and doesn't rely on jump scares or CGI, it just plays on the creepy side. It does have a Japanese or Korean style about it (at least I think so)
Acting was just ok so don't expect to see either of them playing Hamlet any time soon on Broadway.
Not sure if like the ending though
Busanhaeng (2016)
Very good zombie film
I really like this even though I had to read the sub titles. Great zombies and characters and the acting was very, very good, especially the little girl. Her performance was truly amazing. Very rarely do you see such a talent in such a young child but she was superb. Well worth a watch and I normally hate having to read subs
The Wall (2017)
A nice change
I liked this film partly because it's different. Most military films have guns, bombs and explosions but this focused on the tension. Pretty simple idea and very cheap to make but that's a good thing. Well worth a watch
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
Nice take on King Kong
I quite like this take on King Kong. It's a good fun monster movie. Obviously it's predictable but that's fine. The soldiers weren't over the top tough guys who go gung-ho into battle, quite the opposite. There was a lot of characters which kinda took from their character depth but atleast they die. Well worth a watch
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Trash, garbage, awful, dull and pointless
What more can I say about this pathetic attempt at a zombie film!
The characters were stupid and deliberately unfunny, the plot was so badly written, the ending was bizarre and the rest of the film was even worse.
And the UFO bit...what the hell was that about?
It wasn't a horror film as it was not scary at all
It wasn't a comedy because there weren't any funny parts
It was a hero type film because they just weren't
I'm not sure what it was.
Those actors should be embarrassed by this
The Hunt (2020)
Good idea for a film
Not a bad film and definitely worth a watch.
The storyline has been done before but nevertheless, quite good anyway.
I liked how they made the hunters out to be a bunch of rich, dumb, spoilt SJW's who couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery yet still thinking they're the worlds elite.
The story did lack depth as it hinged on the hunted going back to the very beginning to find the other hunters just sitting around waiting. Picking most of them off at the beginning of the hunt and arming them didn't make much sense to me. If it was just for target practice, why goto all the bother and if was a hunt, get out there and hunt them, don't just sit in your bunker.
The cameos were good even if it felt like they didn't contribute much and I like also liked the dry humour.
Bloodshot (2020)
Seen before but still decent
Nothing and I mean nothing was new about this film. Vin Diesels character, the plot line, revenge for his murdered wife and certainly not the ending.
99/100 of us will be able to tell the whole story just by seeing the trailer, still, give it a watch as it's a fun movie. The action was pretty decent along with the special FX.
There's no plot twist or any surprises, what so ever but if you like VD (Vin Diesel and not the STD) then you'll like this.
Code 8 (2019)
Enjoyable watch
A decent slow paced action movie with people with super human abilities. It had the usual story of a man needing to earn money to help his dying mum so he turns to crime but it was still a decent film. Not gunna win and awards at the Oscars but nevertheless, I quite enjoyed it.
Well worth a watch
Killing Gunther (2017)
Embarrassing pile of crap
Annie must be skint to do this. It tried to be funny and fell short...by a long way.
How on earth have people given this 10 stars? It's garbage
Save 90 minutes of your life and cut your balls with a rusty coke can.
A Cure for Wellness (2016)
Reminded me of Shutter Island
This was an ok film and is kinda predictable. Very slow paced with lots of, so called, suspense. If you've seen Shutter Island, you'll find this similar, not in the actual story but in the style of the story.
Joker (2019)
Good film but lacked a punch.
I thought it was a good film but certainly didn't think it was a masterpiece. Joaquin Phoenix does deserve praise for his acting as it really was excellent and the script was well thought out but it also was quite flat for long periods. I was hoping for a little more, especially after seeing all of the reviews, which is never a good thing as you go into it almost demanding it's perfection. I gave it a 7 because it was well made and acted but if anyone else was the star man, I mean an unknown actor without all of the hype, this film MIGHT not get the same recognition as it did.
Ad Astra (2019)
Boring and uneventful
Not sure what I watched as it was just...nothing!
I get what story they were trying to tell but I just thought it was drab. There wasn't any excitement and wasn't that well made. Lots of factual errors and the space scenes where they're walking and floating were pretty bad.
It doesn't do a very good job at explaining things as you go so you're left wondering if it was even important, which most if the time it isn't. So many things that happen in the film are for no apparent reason and doesn't fit into the story at all. Example, when they're first in space and there's a SOS call.
Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
Decent film but I don't speak Spanish
This is as expected which is a good thing as I really wanted to see Rambo slaughter people. The killings were gory and made good use of his booby trap skills.
My main gripe was that the film had a lot of Spanish in it and I didn't have subtitles.
Also, he didn't kill the girl who lured his niece into the trap where she was kidnapped, she deserved to die.
Not sure where the $50m budget went as the green screen driving scenes were pretty bad. All in all, a decent film and lots of killings.
Hellboy (2019)
What have they done!
This was so bad, it's annoying. I loved the first 2 and Ron Pearlman played Hellboy brilliantly. He was funny and charming whilst this guy was completely pathetic. The CGI wasn't very good and the humour was terrible. The main villain was straight out of a 1000 other films with nothing original. She was totally predictable and boring.
Don't bother with this pathetic attempt at a comic book, sci-fi, action, comedy, thriller . You'll just be wasting 2 hours of your life...like I did.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Great SFX but god awful story
I'm disappointed in this film as I was really exited about it. I love sci-fi films of all kind but this is just CGI.
The hero's were overacting, they're boring, predictable and the whole husband and wife thing being drawn together because of their daughter was just ridiculous. Great monster scenes but sadly the rest of the film was garbage.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017)
Slow paced but in a good way
This is a slow paced film which a great. A list actors that played their part in telling a story about small town cops and frustration in solving a horrific crime. Thankfully we didn't get to see that rape and murder, just that it happened and still haunts her mum and brother. A grieving mother doing what she can to kick start the local cops into hunting these monsters down after the trail runs cold and trying to make up for her last words to her daughter during an argument which were "I hope you do get raped" in which she still feels guilty.
Great film so give it a watch.
Hell or High Water (2016)
Great acting from a great cast
I liked this film a lot because of a few things. The casting was great and the characters they played was great too. 3 A list actors who complimented each other rather than fighting for screen time was really nice to see. The old meeting the new ( generationally speaking ). Two scumbag brothers think they're doing the right thing by robbing banks to pay off the mortgage, not caring or not giving a second thought to the people they're traumatising, go on a rampage of thieving and violence. An old cop and his pissed off partner try their best to get one step ahead of them and in doing so just proves why he needing to retire. Too old and too slow. Great film and definitely worth a watch.
Annihilation (2018)
Not sure what I've just watched
This is a strange sci-fi film in that its not an action film with aliens running about the place. It try's to be a psychological sci-fi with some "special effects" but it doesn't really work for me. The story was also laboured and didn't really make sense. It kinda muddled through without explaining what or who was responsible for whatever that "Shimmer" thing is. They're attacked in the night by a bear type thing which is fine but why was the woman who was standing guard away from the watch tower where the other 3 girls were sleeping? She was standing in some crappy hut in the middle of the field with a light on instead of being 50 feet up a guard tower, she was completely alone and too far away to give a warning. When she finally reached the lighthouse, which was their destination from the start, things started to happen but it just got weird.
I certainly wouldn't want to pay good money to watch it in the theatre but it's ok for Netflix.
