Pagans and Pilgrims: Britain's Holiest Places (2013)
A well-researched and passionate overview, categorised by theme
I thought that the presenter objectively laid out the subject matter without recourse to his own beliefs. Episode 1 looks at the part ruins have long played in informing the spiritual beliefs of congregants, having regard to the seemingly universal effect of nostalgia. The programme takes the whole of the UK as its range, taking into its remit locations such as Whitby Abbey, Coventry Cathedral, and the alleged last resting place of St Andrew,
Gorky Park (1983)
Average potboiler
I enjoyed William Hurt in this rather implausible crime drama. The music is the worst I have yet to endure.
Chernobyl (2019)
Stunning
This is a wonderful production which engaged my undivided attention throughout. The acting is compelling, especially that of Jared Harris (who I didn't especially rate in Mad Men) and Emily Harris.
The last five minutes of the final episode ties everything together in the context of present day reality and should not be missed. The series as a whole is a very moving memorial to the sacrifices made by the ordinary Soviet worker in the maintenance of the state. It deserves to win all of the accolades for which it has been nominated.
Devs (2020)
Stunning
At the time of writing, seven of the eight episodes have been released and I have binge-viewed all of them virtually back to back. The series has clearly been put together with devotion and great skill. I struggle to recall previously waiting so impatiently for anything as I have for the release of the last episode, and I just hope that it is as consistently good as the rest - a thrilling, unpredictable and sumptuous feast for the senses.
I have seen critical appraisals of the acting of the female lead. I personally think that Sonoya Mizuno is entirely right for the role, and captures the element of trauma involved in her experience extremely convincingly.
Patriot (2015)
Stunning televisual entertainment
Wonderfully original, beautifully written, wickedly funny ... and with some great casting... especially the lead, Michael Dorman. I was addicted before I had finished the first episode, and like other reviewers, I am already hankering after season 2.
