The Russians did Brexit!
9 July 2019
Feedback is a decent film that is infested with the now unavoidable liberal propaganda in everything on television. This time we get Brexit conspiracies, 'Islamphobia' and Donald Trump in one bizarre 5 minute segment that is so overt, random and pointless that it came across as a parody at first. Unfortunately it wasn't.

More political propaganda
25 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Every transgression made by the female leads is the fault of a man.

All four of the white male characters are immoral, cheating deceptive liars. The men who portray decency are all black.

The teacher is free to raise her child by herself at the end, because she don't need no man. The cold blooded killer gets away with murder (2 years in prison) and announces at the end that she's free to go after another evil white man.

Shameless and overt propaganda.

Sub sea level/par feminist movement
29 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A steely looking Tom Hanks lookalike lends his expertise and sea craft to a small special ops team on a recovery mission.

We soon realise he is just a proto-main character and he quickly makes way for the female team leader to take charge of the storyline and screen. The mission quickly becomes a fight for survival as she makes one cretinous decision after another.

Eventually she is challenged by her right hand man who is three times her size and has already knocked out a similarly sized character with a single punch. This is no problem for her though as she rips his shoulder out of it's socket then strangles him with her bare hands, but not before delivering some edgy put downs.

In a final twist, her henchman rises from the dead and attacks Tom Hanks who by this time has been reduced to a useless damsel in distress. Not to worry. Our tiny heroine is on hand to save the day and kill him a second time! By this point I got the impression the audience was supposed to be rooting for her, which wasn't easy after her moronic actions had effectively killed everyone on board.

Inevitably, the female is the only survivor and ends up stranded in the middle of the ocean. Couldn't have happened to a better person.

Great if you're still not tired of the slowly dwindling feminist/sjw agenda.

Starve (2014)
7/10
A smart look at culinary habits
23 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Starve is a stylish documentary essentially about healthy eating, but containing an intriguing study into the human culinary psyche.

If only healthy foods were on offer would you be prepared to fight to the death for them, or would you rather die than get your hands on a hot dog or burger? Tune into Starve to find out.

A trio of Americans including him out of Final Destination 5 are kidnapped by a diet enthusiast - Think Jamie Oliver for adults. Taking a dim view of their junk food fuelled lifestyle, he locks them in a warehouse and watches as his glamorous waitress wife serves them only salad, vegetables and fruit. There is no pulled pork in sight and the nearest Mcdonalds is 400 miles away.

Inevitably, there is a twist. Firstly, the original three characters are not alone. The warehouse is teeming with unhealthy eaters yet to improve their diets, some of which have been there for years if not decades. Secondly and perhaps most importantly, the healthy food is only served if the prisoners fight for it first. Action fans are therefore treated to several blood laden duels and psychological battles, all for the prize of a cucumber sandwich.

As the dietitian's methods become more extreme, the contestant's desperation grows. By the end, the survivors are battle hardened, traumatised murderers, but outwardly a picture of perfect health. Was it worth it? That's for you to decide, but the message in the film is delivered subtly and without ever patronising the viewer.

The true story of Starve is sure to appeal to both documentary and horror fans, and is likely to make you consider swapping that kebab meat pizza for a spinach sandwich, on wholemeal bread

Hard Shoulder (2012)

Cold Shoulder
3 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
My intention was not to review this atrocious exercise in abysmality but the pathetic fake reviews have once again compelled me to even up the score.

An interracial family that seemingly all hate each other head out for a countryside road trip. Presumably their destination involves family counselling because no one in this vehicle likes anyone else, every combination possible is at war, meaning their arduous journey is punctuated only by constant complaining and petty squabbling.

As tempers fray and fatigue kicks in, their vehicle is overtaken by a loutish group of rogues who gesture provocatively and slow their vehicle down when the lead has been stolen. The father reacts the only way you would react with two small children in the back, by shouting, swearing, and attempting to overtake the offending vehicle again. By the time he has been convinced to put his thinking cap on, their car collides and they awaken to find themselves at the mercy of said rogues.

You might as well ignore the following 40-50 minutes of the film because it never happened and is entirely pointless. Characters that don't exist futilely interact with each other. Unlike in some of the hundreds of other films that this has ripped off, the dream sequence or whatever its supposed to be, means absolutely nothing and has no bearing on anything. Incredulously this has been described as an 'original twist' by some users, and some even claim that it enhanced the end product. If "Dead End/Cold Shoulder" was only as long as the events in the film, a semi interesting short story would remain that might be worth an extra mark.

An appalling waste of time, money, bandwidth and anything else that was expended on it

Belongs in the dark
16 January 2015
Think of what you want most in the world.

The good news is that it's probably going to be replaced by something more realistic when you get to around the 20 minute mark of this film. The bad news is it will feel just as unlikely to happen.

"Out of the Dark" is a mercilessly slow, plodding and derivative drama, not a horror/thriller as advertised. There is little to no action to speak of until the last few minutes and nothing to break up the laborious crawl towards the finale. The half decent twist towards the end will be wasted on the comatose audience.

A pointless regurgitation of scenes and clichés filmed a million times before, in the form of a 20 minute story dragged out for three and a half hours.

2 marks for the film itself plus a bonus mark for the fact that it defied the odds and did actually end.

Preservation (2014)

Do not preserve
10 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Persevere is almost an anagram of Preserve. Neither action should be applied to this abysmal piece of must miss vermin.

Three obnoxious young adults head to a nature reserve to hunt (?), thoughtfully taking along a plot device on 4 legs with them. On the second morning of their expedition they awake to find that their tent, weapons and clothes have been stolen, and their plot device has been killed and suspended 300 feet from the ground. It soon transpires that the hunters have become the hunted and that their motiveless prospective killers are indestructible against other males and unable to speak to each other.

Every single scene from this offensive creation has been done better at least seven times elsewhere, though if you want to see the quickest transition from meek vulnerable pregnant woman to formidable female Rambo ever captured on film it may be worth a look.

Two marks, one for the acting by the dog, one for the (unintentionally) funny final scene.

The Mirror (III) (2014)

Saw through it
10 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
An extremely bizarre tale in the ever popular found footage format. In a nod towards Shallow Grave (1994), three hard up flatmates advertise for an additional lodger. Their plea is soon answered and their new flatmate moves in, with considerable baggage. It transpires that he sleepwalks, suffers from bloodshot eyes, and rearranges the furniture in the middle of the night.

Things take a really shocking twist when they awake one morning to find that he has turned into a mirror. As you might assume, chaos ensues and the mirror begins a murderous rampage. A nod towards Hollow Man (2000) perhaps.

If you don't want a major scene of the film spoiled, then either don't look at the DVD cover or somehow forget you saw it.

The film is concluded by a poor finale with the usual crappy tacked on girl power ending that is improved slightly when the mirror actually looks in another mirror, causing both to explode, as well as the flat and a local construction site.

Not a prequel to Mirrors (2008)

Hazard Jack (2014)

Hazard Joke
20 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
An appalling creation. A characterless bunch of irksome young people head to a disused hospital to play paintball, little knowing that a psychotic war veteran lurks there, just in case some irksome young people head there to play paintball. The token interracial couple, jock, pregnant woman and geek are all present and correct.

It's hard to say whether this merits being labelled as horror, 90% of the film consists of the idiotic characters stripping, making unfunny remarks and writhing in front of their cameras, accompanied by a 48 minute remix of some of the crappest music ever. In the final 10 minutes the killer finally appears from the shadows and begins to despatch the moronic cast, mostly off screen. Hazard Jack is probably the most useless serial killer in film history. Luckily for him though most of his victims are only too happy to accept their fate, because the moment they decide to fight back against him he is subdued with ease and this awful feature is mercifully brought to an end. Hazard Jack would have benefited from a few less topless dance scenes and a few more action scenes. 3 Marks out of 10 = 1 for the effective back story imagery, 1 for the severed head collection scene and 1 for the song at the end.

Inevitably, not a single paintball shot is fired.

SPOILER - The blue team wins.

Essentially a teen dance off with a health and safety conscious serial killer thrown in at the end. A steaming pile of bulltoss.

Flight 7500 (2014)
3/10
The Grudge on a plane
10 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
7500 is shockingly bad PG-13 fare that contains possibly enough material for a 15-20 minute Tales of the Unexpected episode, the word Unexpected being used very lightly indeed. The events of the film are so nonsensical, illogical and laughable that the only ending possible is the one that becomes obvious after about 10 minutes. Stretching this atrocious story out for 80 minutes was a far more horrific act than anything contained in the film and yet almost an admirable feat in its own right.

However if you like any of the following clichés you may find something to enjoy:

Moody, profound goth character

Jump scares

Off screen murders

Sinister British person

Extras that conveniently disappear into thin air

Overused ending which absolves the director of having to account for any of the ridiculous rubbish that has just taken place, bizarrely described as a twist by some reviewers.

The real twist is that 7500 is coming to cinemas next month. Who'd have guessed that?

Godzilla (2014)
26 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Who really thought Heisenberg was dead? Deep in an underground laboratory in Japan, Walter White has survived and continues to make Crystal Meth, this time with his wife. One day, he accidentally mixes some radiation in with his product, and two insects become addicted to it until they reach gigantic sizes and begin murderous rampages. In a heartbreaking scene near the beginning of the film, Walt's wife Skylar is tragically trapped in one of the labs during a radiation leak and is burned alive. Walt can't help but triumphantly mutter something about being able to keep the kids as he watches her face melt off from outside.

15 Years later, Walter White Junior aka Flynn has finally grown up and is now a soldier. Not impressed by all the trouble his father is causing, he travels to Japan for a catch up. No sooner are father and son reunited, than the giant insects aka the MUTOS are causing more carnage and eventually kill Heisenberg himself, and this time he really is dead. The irony of killing their own dealer is not lost on the MUTOS, who continue to destroy everything in sight.

With a few minutes left, Godzilla makes a short cameo and succeeding where millions of heavily armed soldiers failed, kills both MUTOS with ease. A large statue of him is erected in Japan but he also destroys this. Flynn takes over his father's Meth business and Godzilla becomes his right hand man.

Lord of Tears (2013)

Lord of Tears
25 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
A terrible film. A mono syllabic Scotsman is plagued by visions of a giant owl relating to his childhood. He returns to his family home to resolve his issues but soon wishes he hadn't bothered, and so will you.

During his stay he meets a very friendly ghost, who initially pretends not to be one. When he finds out that she is a ghost though, she starts sulking and transforms her appearance and voice into something demonic. She then decides that being as her secret is out, she will terrorise him for the rest of the film and begins to chase him, chastise him, and assault him, as if he didn't have enough problems already. It's a far cry from the scenes when he didn't know she was a ghost, which involved a never ending serenade and an interesting swim in the pool.

In the end he manages to solve the mystery and excitedly goes home to tell his best friend. Unfortunately though his best friend gets bored half way through the story, transforms into a giant owl and drowns our hapless hero before he can say "Who said owls only come out at night?"

The Purge : Anarchy
25 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
A couple's car breaks down on the night of the Purge, leaving them to fight for survival with a few other people. Take note as this is the only time an AA membership won't seem ridiculously overpriced. They inexplicably buy some groceries the day before the Purge is due to start and there are ominous signs from the beginning when some menacingly masked people leer at them in slow motion from the back of a van. With widespread theft, rape and murder on the horizon, you might be forgiven for thinking they might buy their groceries with a few days to spare before its due to take place rather than a few hours.

The hapless young couple soon meet some other people roaming the streets and face a tense fight for survival with criminals, vampires, rats, cats and other creatures of the night.

It soon transpires that one of the group is a vigilante looking to avenge his son and the other characters don't really matter. Along the way some of them face more danger and some are even killed.

When our hero gets to his targets house though he decides against revenge and instead whispers some sweet nothings to the people responsible and splits in time to get back for the football highlights. However he has been followed by his superior from the Forces who is not happy with him for various reasons. A tense standoff follows until the alarm goes off to signal the end of the Purge and everyone drops their weapons and patiently go back to behaving impeccably for another year, until the government tells them its OK to kill people again.
